Going to buy a Remington 700 and I can't decide whether I want to go with .308 or .300 mag. Help me
>>
>remington 700
>>
>>30949609
Yes?
>>
>>30949573
What do you want to do with it
>>
>>30949893
Hunting mostly, and where I live the 300 will probably be overkill. The problem I'm having is trying to decide if I want to get the 300 in case i get to do some big game/long range hunting in the future. I'm also worried that the 300 is too much gun for a guy just getting into long range shooting.
>>
>>30950014
get a 7mm rem mag
>>
>>30949573
30-06.
>>
>>30950052
this op
>>
>>30949609
>>30949839
whatever, let him experience post-freedomgroup remington.
Will we see a remginton bitching thread sometime in the future?
>>
>>30950039
This.
>>
>>30950052
Pros:
>Same .308 round
>Can use longer/heavier bullets than .308Win brass can accommodate if desired
>Greater case capacity than .308Win. for hotter/heavier loads than .308Win can handle
>Equal or greater ballistic performance for reloads
>Is capable of taking every type of game .308Win is on top of larger game .308 is borderline acceptable/not acceptable for
>A ton of reload data for loads suitable for anything from mule deer to moose
Cons:
>A bit more expensive factory ammunition and brass
>Some people whine about long actions

For a do-all hunting rifle 30-06 basically covers every base .308 does and a whole lot beyond with hardly any negatives if you reload.
>>
>>30950165
not op but whats wrong with the 700? I personally love the action over anything else in its price range
also if you want to shoot distance 308 is good to learn 300 will get you further out
>>
>>30950224
accidental discharge meme, much like the glocknade meme
>>
>>30950039
Op here. Care to extrapolate?
>>
>>30950281
the only time i've seen an AD is retards not cleaning them for years and i've heard the glocknade meme but its one of my favorite pistols those things are indestructible

its the round for the money

>>30950338
yes, but thats why people here dont like them
>>
>>30949573
Get the .308. It's a good starter round. Easy to find ammo that's cheaper... and recoil is very tame. Both of those facts will contribute to you shooting the .308 a lot more... and being new... there is no substitute for trigger time.

Then if you get tired of the .308 or it becomes inadequate for your needs, you can deal with that when that time comes.
>>
>>30950398
stupid chart is stupid...

at least show something that's relevant... that shit is hardly representative of anything being discussed here and doesn't validate your point at all.

7mm rem mag is perfect op
>>
Pawn shops and gun stores are full of lightly-used .300 and .338 Winmags, OP. People get enamored of the ballistics and then they discover it hurts to shoot and ammo is scarce and costs $2 a shot when you can find it. Get the .308. With modern bonded 180-grain bullets you can kill anything on the North American slope except maybe griz or buffalo.
>>
>>30951231
guy is a new shooter... said he MAY get into long range or big game hunting... he didn't specify what he WILL be hunting or at what ranges / conditions.

I love the 7mm rem mag myself, but if this guy is hunting hogs or white tail... that shit is still way overkill and won't encourage good habits.
>>
If you're wanting to hunt elk at 200 yards and under, with the option of doing long range target shooting, 6.5 creedmoor is probably the best option. If you're wanting to do long range hunting...7mm RM as previously discussed. The 300 WM is another option, but recoil and cost of ammo make me ask 'why?'.

I don't see a point in getting .308 at all these days, even though I have one and enjoy it. Get a better performing cartridge for your bolt action; you're not going to be shooting 147gr M80 ammo out of your bolt action anyway, so the 'cheap plinking ammo' is kind of bullshit.
>>
>>30951304
No R700 factory chambered in your special snowflake round.

I own a post 64 model 70 (new haven CT factory) in 300 win mag. Purchased it for the sake of hogs and giggles, it does have quiet a lot of recoil and ammo is expensive, but I enjoy it none the less, I recommend it over Remington OP. (I fell for the Remington 783 meme and regretted it)
>>
.308 is so fucking fun to shoot in my opinion and should knock down about anything under the sun. I have no experience with .300 but I'm assuming it's like a more expensive slightly more powerful .308.
>>
>>30949573
Would you recommend a rem 700 for sniping human beings? I guess it wouldn't matter what you get if the scope's shit, right?
>>
>>30951304
>>30950216
Thanks for the info. I will take all this into consideration. I think I will go with .308 or 30-06 and move up when/if need be. Can anyone break down anymore pros/cons of .308 vs 30-06 such as price, ballistics, availability, etc?
>>
.308 is a fundamentally more accurate chambering. '06 if you're hunting larger stuff.

I bought an '06 for my primary hunting rifle all those years ago, and if I had to do it over I'd probably have gone with a .243

>>
>>30950224

Around 2006 Remington was bought out by a conglomerate called "The Freedom Group".

Quality control immediately went to shit as they basically maxed out profit and minimized cost.

For extra (((coincidence))) look up the CEO of the Freedom Group.
>>
>>30949573
Depends on what you want to do with it.

Long range target shooting? .308 for price, .300 win mag for performance

Tacticool safe queen? .308

Elk/moose/bear hunting? .300 win mag

Deer/light game? .308

And don't get anything made by fucking Remington.. They are trash since freedom group, (unless you want to buy an old one, those are great).

If you want a new rifle, get a Tikka T3, a Winchester Model 70, or a CZ. All of those rifles are very well respected
>>
>>30953443
Never buy a screwy caliber that no one uses OP.

Price and availability are always important

>>
>>30954091
or OP can split the difference between the .308 and .300 with 30-06.

150 grain rounds for the smaller shit, and 220 for the bigger stuff.

not to mention that every mom and pop shop will have a box of 30-06
>>
>>30951442
Well, that's good news for OP then.
