This.

I bought an Outlaw with an overall length of 29 inches, which is somehow a non restricted weapon in Canada.

This has an awful kick, the casing jam in the chamber after shooting because of expansion and I have to break it over my knee to extract them, the forestock falls off every now and then when you fire it, fucking garbage production quality.

The only reason I bought it was because it was 180$, and I would probably sell it for cost, but every time I look at it, I remember how fucking cool it looks.
>>
>>30946643
With modern shotguns, the benefits gained from sawing them down are minimal. It doesn't effect the spread very much, and the ease of concealment isn't much help to anybody who isn't up to no good, barring a few exceptions. And of course, it becomes difficult to aim without a stock.

Basically, there's the cool factor from movies and games like Doom, and that's it. But you know what, this is America goddamnit. "Because I can" is reason enough for me. You want to get yourself a sawed-off, go right the fuck ahead.

That's kinda why they're so heavily regulated. For the longest time, they were the sole purview of mob hitmen and street crooks, who preferred them for that very reason.

On a somewhat related note. As I was typing this, I was reminded of the whack ass sawed-off shotgun from Killing Them Softly. Now I'm curious what would happen if somebody tried to fire this monstrosity.

>criminals being criminal
>punish everyone else for it

I must reiterate how much I hate people.
>>
>>30946760
To be fair, not many other people were using them other than criminals. Probably because any self respecting gun enthusiast knows that they aren't very practical or effective.
>>
>>30946786

Why's that? The spread? The lack of barrel length taking too much power out of it? Figured that at close range, it wouldn't make a huge difference.
>>
>>30946675

Um, they are still significantly more effective at putting someone down than a regular handgun. They were also used by truckers (one of the main groups Ithaca marketed their Auto Burglar series to).

>>30946828
There's actually no difference in spread given a comparable choke and shotguns barely lose velocity from shorter barrels until you go under 10"-12".
>>
>>30946854
Huh, that's weird, normally polishing fixes sticky chambers at least. Have you tried using shorter shells?
>>
>>30946828
The fact that the lack of a stock makes aiming and recoil management difficult?

And if you have one where only the barrels are cut down, then it becomes harder to conceal, which for many is the point of a sawed-off in the first place.
>>
>>30946907
>>30946907
I just use the cheap shells from the COOP, so I haven't really experiemented with high/low brass.

I also have so low power 2.5" shells for my Old English Shotgun I was going to try in there since it is a 3" chamber.

Come to think of it, I should compare the brass size on the 2&3/4", 3", and slugs I sent through there. They all stuck though.
>>
>>30946924
I read that as
>And if you have one where one barrel are cut down
And was losing my mind as to why anybody would only cut one barrel, and not the other.
>>
>>30946890
>Um, they are still significantly more effective at putting someone down than a regular handgun

I was speaking relative to unmodified shotguns. Probably should've clarified.

I would probably take a sawed-off over a handgun, but then, I would take ANYTHING over a handgun, unless we're talking about EDC weapons.

I'm not saying I don't like them, don't get me wrong. I just recognize their limitations.
>>
So sawed off shotguns are pretty heavily regulated.

Is there anything preventing someone from manufacturing some kind of pistol that uses shotguns shells in the first place?

What's the status of sawed off other shit?

I wanted a kind of sawed off lever action after seeing this for a while.
>>
>>30946948
Look up a Mare's Leg
>>
>>30946924
>then it becomes harder to conceal
It's still easier to maneuver indoors you fucktard. Same reason why people who clear buildings regularly opt for SBRs.

>>30946947
>I was speaking relative to unmodified shotguns
No one is going to opt for a shotgun with no stock when one with a stock could be used in the same roll just like no one will opt for a pistol when they can use a long gun. The problem is that there are times when lighter/more concealable guns are necessary, and if I was in an area where carjackings or armed robberies were common I would favor something as close to the effectiveness of a long gun while still being easily maneuverable in a vehicle/easily off body carried in a bag, which short barrel shotguns with no stock excel at.
>>
>>30946948
The rules are, as I remember them

>if it has rifling and below .50 caliber it is considered a pistol
>if it was manufactured with a vertical foregrip, pistol grip and you never ever put a stock on it it is an AOW with a $5 tax stamp

Marelegs are the same as any other 'pistol' like the AR or AK ones
>>

>>

>>if it was manufactured with a vertical foregrip, pistol grip and you never ever put a stock on it it is an AOW with a $5 tax stamp

>>
>>30944168
if your dad really wanted it he could pay the goddamn tax stamp, you know.
>>
>>30947020
Right, thought that was a given regarding the thread so forgot about it. Also if you demill per ATF specifications and re weld you can classify any shotgun as an AOW given you technically manufactured it. Waste of time in my opinion other than to prove a point but also possible if you have more time and equipment than sense.
>>
>>30947057
>Right, thought that was a given regarding the thread so forgot about it.
Still deserves mention as there are guns (other than AR pistols) that hit 26" OAL with sub 16" barrels.

Traditional shotguns are more aesthetically pleasing, no question

But when I look at a full-length Mossberg 590, I see one of the most beautifully effective close-range combat weapon ever designed. Practically indestructible, stone-cold reliable, ridiculously versatile, silly simple design and great firepower. Centuries of firearm development have lead to this kind of excellence, and it is a beautiful sight to behold.

pros:
-looks metal as fuck
-short and light (for a shotgun)
-high firepower (for that size)

neutrals:
-wide spread

cons:
-high recoil, especially when using it with just one hand
-obviously, is not accurate at all (but it is meant to be used at short range or in closed spaces)
-require a lot of maintenance when fired often

Sawed off's were fairly popular before NFA 1934. A little handy .410 would have been used by campers or to keep pests out of the garden.
The Ithaca was bought by cops and regular folks as car guns and for home defense.
Sadly, given how info traveled in those days, a lot of people didn' tknow what they had was illegal until it was too late to paper them and now they're contraband.
They still turn up now and then when someone dies and the family is going through their stuff.

As I understand it, all you'd have to do is get your hands on a 500 that was shipped from the factory with a pistol grip or no grip at all and fit a raptor grip. After that you can chop the barrel to any length you like as long as the whole thing is over 26".
