Unfortunately, firearms accidents among law enforcement are all too common.
LEO's get on average 4 hours firearm training in their accreditation program, then an hour or two of range time twice to four times a year.
For this, everyone seems to universally treat them as firearms "experts."
That's literally like saying my teenage kid took driver's ed last year, and has driven to and from school once a week this year, and therefore he's a driving expert, or an expert in mechanics or automotive safety.
In my hometown, first city law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in 40 years was shot by his own range partner ND'ing a Glock at the range while finger-on-the-trigger racking the slide. Concrete, ricochet, took a bullet to the chest, got a hero's funeral.
LEO's are NOT experts. Even the SWAT guys. If an individual LEO is particularly knowledgeable, it's because of his own commitment outside work, not his training while on the job. Some of the sloppiest trigger discipline I've ever seen was from LEO's at the range.
We still have State Troopers who draw their weapon and hold it at "low ready" with finger on the trigger for every traffic stop, and creep up along the passenger's side. Gives me the willies, because a cop with his gun drawn and finger on the trigger is by far the greatest risk to my safety that I will experience in any given day, week, or month. One tiny misinterpretation, and it's over for me - and you can bet the cop will have some pat excuse for the shooting, that I was "reaching for something" - and the public will rush to his defense. We've created a bipolar society where most people either think cops are experts who 99% of the time do no wrong and shoot out of absolute necessity, or they think cops literally blaze down citizens every chance they get. It's simpler than that. Cops are scared of traffic stops like teenage girls are scared of spiders. Put a gun in the hand of either, and God only knows where lead will end up.

It has more to do with being overworked and undertrained. Increased pay may attract a better batch of people than the dumbasses I work with (there are some but most are normal people, mainly the ex mil guy are the shitheads).

If I had more time off I'd certainly train more. After a 10+ hour shift of going nonstop (this is due to funding cuts causing a hiring freeze, were 200 officers short so I have to respond to calls back to back which causes mental strain which can lead to bad decision making) anyway after that I don't want to go shoot or workout or read about new laws or anything. I want to decompress my spine and sleep, and I better because I only get around 2 hours of personal time during my work days.

I don't care if I get paid more. My demands at police union meetings are always less hours and better retirement. The guys that are 20+ years in are useless, we recently increased the length of service for a 50% retirement to 25 years, that needs to come back down to 20. Increased funding for training (for existing officers as well, not just academy students) would obviously help as well, and perhaps more vigorous pre-enployment screening to keep these shiteaters out.
