You have to be 18+ a firearm, you have to be 21+ to buy a handgun from a dealer. You can still buy handguns from private sellers or be gifted one by your parents or something. You can own a handgun at 18 but not buy it from an FFL, basically.

Okay OP, some pointers for guns.

1. Assume always all firearms are loaded until you confirm otherwise. Always treat a firearm as if it is loaded regardless.

2. When shooting, always ensure you have a clear line to and beyond your target. Never shoot at something if there is something you do not wish to hit in from of or behind it.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger of your gun until you are ready to fire.

4. Always wear ear and eye protection when shooting.

5. Do not drink and shoot.

If you want to get into firearms and are able, go to your local gun store and purchase a .22 caliber of any general flavor and a box of .22 long rifle. .22 is a forgiving, easy to learn on caliber that will help to teach you the fundamentals of shooting. Learn to load, aim, and fire your rifle accurate at a local range. Learn to clean your rifle at home with /k/ and YouTube or the rest of the internet.

Dont be shy. The gun community, dispute what impressions from the media and /k/ will tell you, is polite, kind and generally open minded to people: the last thing an already marginalized community wants is to marginalize potentially new members.

If I was in Louisiana I'd offer to take you to the range but sadly I'm not.
