Dad wants to buy property up near northern-Ontario. What are the bears like up there? Is 7.62x54R capable of stopping a bear reliably? Dad thinks .30 Carbine for the M1 will suffice but I'm having second thoughts.

.30 carbine will definitely kill a bear

itll still be alive for a few seconds to a minute but in shock

I'd go with 12ga Nitromag or .308 or something
>>
Cryptids will be the real threat.
>>
>>30815298
A .30 carbine defiantly will not be enough to stop a bear of the size you have up there. A 7.62x54 easily will, just make sure you use a hunting soft point bullet and not mil spec fmj.

Obviously. There's plenty of 220gr bullet stuff for it too.

>.30 Carbine
It's about a .357 Magnum, but heavier bullets are fairly rare, handloads are probably your bet.

Tell your dad it is critical that he gets a PTRD.

It is the best defense against bears.

Somehwat related to this thread I guess. I recently got a few rifles from my granfather and I want to hunt deer with them, would it be bes to use a swedish mauser or a remington 1903? Also, would an M1 carbine work for deer in ontario?
>>
>>30815298
Wouldn't trust .30 carbine for anything desu. Use 12 gauge slugs or steel core 54r or something
>>
>>30815453
M1 will work at close range. Mauser and Remington will work with no restrictions. Just make sure you choose the right bullet either way. A soft point hunting bullet, no hollow points or full metal jackets.
>>
>>30815298
Depends on bear. .30 will kill black bear, though your dad might want to get something more sufficient.
Brown bear? Get 12 gauge + slugs. Since you're a dirty canuck you can shorten the barrel flush with the magazine tube of an 870 of mossy 500.

Glorious mosin caliber will take care of all bears with good soft point ammo.
>>
>>30815721
No shortening of barrels and no brown bears in Ontario.

>muh winter coats
are you a time traveler from the 1950's?
>>
>>30815298
.30 carbine isn't enough to take out starving norks what makes you think it can take out a bear
>>
>>30815298
I'd rather the 30 carbine for the semi auto and detacheable mags
Even if it is Canacuck
