I know that modern Western 30-06 is too "hot".
Is Tula or Wolf 30-06 mild enough to be fired out of Garands?

>steel slav shit through a garand
i wouldnt trust any modern 30-06 to run through a garand spare garand specific 30-06 loads. buy surplus greek shit if you can find it or load your own.
Why not just buy a vented gas plug?

Ported I mean.

This. if you dont want the ported plug youre good with any modern load @ 150g
or buy surplus

Or load your own...

I have shot about 1k rounds of Tula and 3k rounds of Wolf out of my 2 Garands. No problems at all and much better / more reliable than that semi-corrosive shit that most the milsurp left is.

Well, no shit. Thanks, bro.

Enjoy, friend.
While I just shoot surplus myself, ian and karl recently did a video testing the ported vs adjustable gas plug and stated that the adjustable is a better choice.

You can watch and make your own decision

You can also just buy PPU garand safe ammo if you can find it.

Meh. I load calibers that I shoot a lot.
>>30804162
I take it, you prefer Wolf? Why? Anything I need to know?

Another big problem is actually the maximum pressure curve. Commercial ammo usually reaches its maximum pressure faster than military ball loads (which are what the Garand was designed for), putting strain on the op rod and damaging/bending it over time. Powder burn rate is a big thing here, as is possibly a ported gas plug.

Ported plug is a bit annoying as you have to chrono it and change it by each brand of ammunition because they all have different burn rate curves.
For ammo options you can either buy M2 ball surplus or commercial manufactured loads for the garand.

I assume, I have to chrono and adjust it if I want to assure tight groups. What if I just want to shoot gongs at 100 yards at the rate of 300-400 rounds a year. Ported plug + wold = ok?
>>30804336
No, you have to chrono/adjust the port so that the pressure is not too high for the specific brand of ammunition you are using.
Its all about pressure. M2 Ball has a specific pressure curve and what you are doing with the ported plug is trying to adjust the curve of the ammunition you are using to match closer to the M2.
You can fire regular commercial ammo in your M1 but you will do damage to it over time, mainly to the op rod. Its not meant to fire the modern pressure curves.
There is a certain hunting M1 Garand ammo out there that is loaded to original spec, so your theoretically able to shoot that without a gas plug. If you want to spend 30 bucks for a box. I believe it's Graff and Son's under Hornady custom ammunition. I've fired about 50-100 rounds out of mine and it's performed wonderfully, and dropped 4 deer instantly.

Just open the plug all the way, completely venting, and move to plug closed 1/4 turn at a time until it cycles properly.
Unrelated question.
I had a random idea of makin an obrez garand. Would it work, where should i cut the barrel/stock?
>>30805453
Short answer: No
Long answer: No , because gas systems are designed with specific ammo and barrel lengths in mind, besides the fact that you have to take the length of the gas system itself into account (probably longer than your desired obrez length). Same reason why there are mare's leg carbines for days but no semi auto equivalents, it's a whole different animal.

Got it. Thanks for the info.
