How does having 20 rounds in a box make me buy more ammo? I have 10 mags and buy 300 rounds of ammo at a time. Same as buying an 8 pack of hotdogs and 8 pack of buns.

Probably so people can do the math of how much ammo they are buying easier. It is easy to buy rounds in the hundreds because 5 boxes make up 100 rounds. If you bought packages of 30 then you would be multiplying 90 and the numbers would never feel right.
