Ok hear me out,

If there were actually to be a gunblade able to perform reasonably as both sword and gun, this is probably the best option.

Variable configuration means you're not shafted by shitty ergonomics in either mode. Reloading would probably be a nightmare though and I'm pretty sure it was never addressed in game.
