Do you have an sbr?
Do you have a suppressor for .308?
Do you reload or have cheap access to ammo?
If you answered no to any of these questions, .300 blk isn't for you.
>>
>>30788250
It's sweet if you have an SBR with a suppressor. Otherwise you are better off with 5.56/.223 for economical reasons.

Yes, its useful. But expensive for what it does out of an unsuppressed 16 inch barrel.

It really shines with suppressed short barrels, but you already knew that.

>>30789302
Basically what this guy says, but I'd throw in SBR too.
>>
>>30789347
I always worry that it won't actually take down a deer. I really want to do a suppressed SBR deer gun build but caliber choice is really bothering me (even if the ammo is supersonic). I've almost convinced myself to just go 16" AR10 but then I really have to worry about weight.

Probably just going to get a threaded 16" .308 bolt action. At least I know .308 will get the job done.

It really shines in short barrels.
10.5" 5.56=~750 ft/lbs muzzle energy.
10.5" 300blk=~1200ft/lbs muzzle energy
same everything besides barrel
Any bullet weight between 110 and 245gr. Switching from high power light FMJ bullets to a heavy lead subsonic takes a simple magazine change.

And to everyone claiming a subsonic 300blk is basically a 45 acp- a 245gr 300blk going 1,100 gives ya 660ft/lbs of energy. Not too far off from what a 556 gives ya from a 10.5" tube huh?
>>
>>30791466
I'm so tempted to buy a 50 beowulf because I already cast and load for 500 mag as well as 357 mag and 300blk, all the powders are interchangeable, bullets are damn near free with my scrap lead, tons of powder and primers. Only thing I would need would be an upper, some brass and a die set. Considering getting rid of all my bitch caliber(9mm) stuff to fund a 50 beo...

People Hunt Deer with AKM's chambered in 7.62x39 which is what .300 BLK is for the most part, some would say even better.

.300 BLK can take down a deer.
>>
>>30794539
I'm worried about longer ranges though. Not even that long, but I don't know if I trust it out to 300 yards.

People hunt with .223, doesn't mean it's ideal. And I don't know if I want to get a less than ideal caliber just because I think AR's are cool.
>>
it's 7.62x39 but worse in every way.
>>
>>30794622
Get something more suitable for that range dude. Im sure a good 357 load with a hornady flex tip would do the job at that range but leverguns just aren't accurate enough for an ethical kill at that range. a 16" carbine is a hell of a little deer gun for a hundred yards.
>>
It's comparable to 7.62x39, with a little less juice. More reliable function in ARs and can use normal AR mags. It has optimal performance out of an 8.5-12 inch barrel. you can't load your own rounds expect to pay out the nose. This can all be found on google in less than 3 minutes. Next question?

What the fuck are you even fucking talking about? Do you realize how fucking stupid that sounds? The cases are completely different sizes. Completely different case heads. It would be like trying to load 45acp into a 380.
>>
>>30788250

It's good if you want an AR that shoots a similar round to 7.62x39 that you can cobble together from 5.56 parts sans barrel. If you have an AK type rifle or one in 7.62x39 like a PTR 32 than I would recommend on passing.

A .22LR can take down a deer, and poachers (ie. those that haven't paid the king's enforcers for the right to eat...) that are far better shots than any of you weekend faggots do it every year.

Get gud.
>>
>>30798132
A spear can take down a deer. An arrow can take down a deer.
>>
300 subsonic is shit for hunting. it just leaves a bullet sized hole. i get it you want to be a tacticool operator with a suppressed sbr. but 300 subsonic is just a little better than .45.
>>
>>30798194
Isn't shot placement what matters most? You need to hit the game in order to kill it.
>>
>>30798200
This.
I've killed quite a few Bambi's with a .22 mag and had them drop on the spot but I've also seen a deer run a half mile after a poorly placed shoulder shot from a 30-06
>>
>>30798106
Needs a different barrel at the least, but a dedicated upper is more desirable.
>>
>>30794693
Check out the Barnes Tac-TX 110grn bullets, those bullets are like magic.

Also 5.56 tumbles immediately on contact with almost any piece of brush or twigs, I've seen it. .300 does not.
>>
>>30794768
It has a little less energy at the muzzle, but the better BC pays off as close as 100 yards when even little 110 grn bullets have more energy than 7.62x39.
Don't ask me to cite it, run the numbers yourself. Even Lapua .311 bullets won't keep up. .300 is hands-down better than 7.62x39 past 100 yards.
>>
>>30794539
.300BLK mimics Russian's 9×39mm cartridges.
>>
>>30798405
7.62x35 vs. 9x39.
Millimeters matter, so do bullet speeds.
>>
>>30792258
Lmao those hipster calibers. Kill yourself my man
>>
>>30798405
.300blk can do 2200 FPS easily, as well as heavier bullets at subsonic speeds.
9x39 is subsonic always. (~950 FPS)
>>
>>30788250
Supers make a pretty decent hunting round.

Subs are very quiet.

Through equal length barrels OVER 10", it outperforms 7.62x39 in every metric, though slightly, but does it with a scant fraction of the recoil. Through barrels UNDER 10", it shits all over 7.62x39. This is at least in part due to slavs not able to into good powder and the like 3 Western companies that produce it not caring enough to use good powder.

It is one of the few rifle rounds that handloaders can use cast or plated bullets in at full velocity.

For handloaders, it can be the single cheapest round available to reload at under 10cpr with commercially cast/coated bullets or down around 4cpr with home-cast, depending on cost of lead.

With the proper bullets, heavy subsonics are viable for hunting out to 150m.

With the proper bullets, heavy subsonics are capable of 750-1000m accuracy (around 1 MOA depending on barrel and shooter).
>>
>>30791232
>.30-30 has killed more large game than all other calibers combined
>.300blk has more MV and ME than .30-30 while using a more aerodynamic bullet so it will only grow in comparative power as yardage increases
I bet you believe .308 is the absolute bare minimum for everything in the world don't you? You're like the fudds near me that think 7mmRM is perfectly fine for the 80-100lb eastern deer we have around here and that .30-06 is the smallest anyone should ever own.
>>
It's overhyped to shot but still useful. Do you 7.62 x39 but don't want to use an ak? Boom! 300blk. That's it. That's all it really is
>>
>>30793705
Yeah it is.
>230gr .45acp at 900fps (414 ft-lbs) compared to 245gr .300blk at 1100fps (638 ft-lbs)
Unless you're implying that 33% higher ME is "close"
>>
>>30798194
>the only conceivable load for subsonic .300blk is the 220gr SMK
Yeah no. There are plenty of heavy cast bullets that get 150-200% expansion at ~800fps.

I hunt with a hollowpointed 245gr NOE cast/coated and it liquefies deer shoulders at anything inside 150 yards.
>>
>>30798672
>600 or 700 ft/lbs at 300 yards
>adequate deer cartridge

If I was only hunting under 100 yards, hell, 200 yards, I wouldn't have any issues. It's great for the applications it was designed for - subsonic suppressed SBR. But the effectiveness doesn't scale well and it's outclassed as range increases.

I don't think .308 is the absolute minimum. I do think full sized cartridges are the minimum though when you're trying to push a shot on a deer past 200 yards.
>>
>>30798826
Remember that the .300 blk is designed as an alternative to 5.56 or 6.8, not as an alternative to .308 or .300 WinMag.
Sure those rounds are better in the way of external ballistics, but that's not the point.

Besides, .300 blk is perfectly capable of humanely killing a deer at 300 yards. It's been done by many. It's all about shot placement as always.

Bullet weight is a meaningless designation, as is diameter, as is muzzle energy, and stopping power is a myth.
>>
>>30798826
I wouldn't hunt deer with a 300 BLK, because I don't hunt suppressed and ARs are tanks and 0.308" trajectories suck at any velocity, but ft/lbs of energy don't kill deer.

Here in Alaska I kill blacktails and caribou as far away as I can see them, with a 223AI bolt gun stocked with Hornady 75 AMax.

>>

>>30799169
You are listing cartridges, not projectiles.

There is nothing inherent about a 0.223" 40 grain projectile that prevents it from killing an elk at 300 yards. It'll be news to you but not to me that elk are easy to kill. Mainly because I've killed a shitload of them.

As for 0.177" options, I don't know of any projectiles up to the task but that has nothing to do with their diameter or mass.

>>30799169

It'll again surprise only you that bears of all color are regularly killed with 0.35"ish projectiles.

Are there supersonic rounds available? I'd love an M16A1 clone in .300BLK with a 20" barrel and some extra range/umph.

I really just want an M16A1 clone but 5.56mm/.223 is just not for me. Never really cared too much for it, to be honest. I already have an AK to it kinda defeats the purpose of what I'm asking but it would be nice to have anyway.
