Super sonic wise it's better than a 300 blackout. Currently at 24 cents a shot I have more weapons in 7.62x39 than 300 blackout. Its an old cartridge but it's legacy, like a 45acp won't go away. 7.62x39 is a great choice for many things. Survival, war, hunting, ect. A 7.62x39 will bring down big game and I like to hunt with it and 300aac because they don't destroy meat like magnums do.

If you get shot in the chest with it, you're probably going to die of pheumothorax and exsanguination, unless you're wearing plates. It has excellent penetrating properties, its most recent iterations yaw very quickly, and leaves devastating wounds. Anyone who says it's not effective is a fucking moron.

The reason people say 5.56 is superior though, is that under ideal circumstances it can do almost all of the same things the 7.62x39 can do, at longer ranges, with a lighter cartridge (meaning more ammo), and with a flatter trajectory.

It's a hell of a lot more effective than 5.56 or 5.45 out of an SBR, especially against four legged targets. The only 5mm cartridge I'd trust with a barrel that short is 5.7x28mm.
