So I just ordered my first gun. Pic related is what I bought in 5.56. I know this might sound retarded to some of you but I really want a red dot sight on it. The idea is to be able to shoot it both short/medium range and long range, in my experience i am not too fond of magnifying scopes. What is the cheapest one I can get that will serve me well for recreational plinking/shooting?

I don't think so

300yrds 9x scope
>>
>>30783274
You are not shooting long range with out magnification.

i dont know what you call long range.

A 1-6. Optic is always a good option . 1 x for short range 6x is good for 500yrds
>>
Looking at one in 300 AAC is that a good idea or is it meme material?
>>
>>30783345
>>30783306
OP here. I think I mispoke. Chances are I won't be firing at anything over 200 yards for the first year I own it. I just need something to cover me up to that.
>>
>>30783404
You can do 200yrds with a red dot, but you won't be super accurate - personally I would recommend a cheaper 4power scope or 3x9 variable scope in the $150-300 range (at least)

Buy once - cry once?

seriously. talk about too much magnification.

I don't see anything you have shot at 300yrds
>>
>>30783438
Mostly I'm going to be shooting short- short/medium range though. I want something mainly for that. Mostly it will be about 50-100 yards.
>>
>>30783345
Not him, but what do you consider long range? I've got shit eyes and can only take iron sights out to 100 yards.
>>
>>30783644
How accurate do you want to be though?
>>
>>30783712
accurate enough to hit a man sized target and maybe a 12 inch steel plate if I'm lucky. I bought this rifle on a budget and am looking to get a cheap scope so I'm not expecting competition style accuracy or even the ability to hit tight bulls-eye groupings from that range.
>>
>>30783449
that looks like 30 rounds in less than 3 MOA, which is perfectly decent. maybe you should post your own targets.

My point was that his magnification level is way, waaaay too high for the range he's shooting at.

Probably did more to hinder his groups than help with that narrow as fuck FOV.

Damn you're making this 3-7 wait a hell of a lot harder with those pictures, but yeah, I'm buying it becacuse I want to shoot as much as possible but want something more powerful than .22LR

now....what type of optic should I get? I'm a new shooter so I'm not going to be doing super long range shit for the most part.

Ok so I've narrowed it down to these

https://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Trophy-TRS-25-Reticle-Riflescope/dp/B00200E0HM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469683823&sr=8-1&keywords=Bushnell+TRS-25

Would 2X magnification still be able to do short range shooting?

how bad would a cheapo reflex sight like this be for recreational plinking?

Get a cheap 1-4c scope maybe? look at primary arms or vortex offerings. IIRC, bushnell was getting rid of their 1-4x with FFP a few months back, maybe there are still some left.

Or use a red dot with one of those 3x magnifiers. I heard they aren't ideal though, never tried myself.

Some red dots, like the first version of the ones from vortex, has screw on 2x lenses. I have heard they are utterly terrible though.
>>
ended up going with this one

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AL1Y2IY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

it has good reviews and seems perfect for what I'm looking for.

First gun + case + scope came to $524, a bit more than I planned but that's about a rent check and it's August so I don't have to pay rent.
>>
>>30783956
>dream urban counter-sniper

This is kind of what I had in mind. I basically wanted a mosin carbine but with cheaper ammo. Something I could take out shooting all day without breaking the bank, something I could hunt with if I wanted to, and something that would fall into the "better than nothing" category of an urban unrest situation, if I needed to go full roof korean.

Just get a good 3-9x40 scope OP, x3 magnification is perfect for closer range stuff, and you still have the flexibility for longer range. red dots are usefull for fast target aquisition at very close ranges like pig hunting.

if you are set on a red dot then i hear the bushnell trs 25 is really good
>>
>>30785475
>>30785313
oh is it this?

>Ruger received criticism from some gun owners for suggesting that rather than ban guns, that Congress should outlaw magazines holding more than 15 rounds.[9] On March 30, 1989, Bill Ruger sent a letter to every member of the United States Congress, stating:
>"The best way to address the firepower concern is therefore not to try to outlaw or license many millions of older and perfectly legitimate firearms (which would be a licensing effort of staggering proportions) but to prohibit the possession of high capacity magazines. By a simple, complete and unequivocal ban on large capacity magazines, all the difficulty of defining 'assault rifle' and 'semi-automatic rifles' is eliminated. The large capacity magazine itself, separate or attached to the firearm, becomes the prohibited item. A single amendment to Federal firearms laws could effectively implement these objectives."
>-William B. Ruger[10]

meh, don't care.

My RAR in .223 is my go to innawoods rifle. Light, plastic stock is durable and it is short enough to take comfortably in a vehicle.

Definitely one of my favorite guns I own.

Good buy, I hope you enjoy it and get plenty of use out of it.
>>
>>30785763
>innawoods

care to elaborate?
>>
>>30785797
In the woods, bush, desert. Wherever. That's just what they call it here. Innawoods is 'in the woods'
>>
>>30783274
can it take AR mags?
>>
>>30786025
i know but what do you use it for innawoods? 223 is too small for large game
>>
>>30783377
expensive as fuck (if you dont reload)
shit trajectory
>>
>>30786056
>this

basically x39 at 10 times the price
>>
>>30786048
Straya.

Heaps of small shit here. Foxes, Kangaroos, Hares, Rabbits.

The only thing I use my .308 for is Pigs and Deer. Especially if I am going somewhere with lots of open areas where I can take them at range.
>>
>>30786048
why do you want to hunt large game when alone? also, if really in need it will do larger game aswell
>>
>>30786129
Shot placement. Know what you can group at what ranges. Remember you aren't in perfect conditions, take that into account. Don't get cocky and take your shot. A bullet to the heart is still a bullet to the heart.
>>
>>30786122
true. good luck out there m90, 223 will put a whallop on dem spideys

>>30786129
If i were taking a bolt gun as an innawoods gun it would be because i need a srs caliber like 338 win mag for taking down bears or boars. otherwise a semiauto in 556 or x39 would be sufficient because of the rate of fire

idk what your definition of 'larger game' is, but i could see 223 maybe used on a smallish whitetail durr at the absolute most
>>
>>30786062
I don't see why people get in to special snowflakes when they don't reload. Sure, 300 Blackout is becoming more common, but it's also a gateway drug to other uncommon calibers.
>>
>>30783691
My nm rifle i shoot to 300yds with iron sights.

My longest personal shot was on a 3 moa 1000 yard gong using irons.

With scoped rifles i routinely shoot 600yrds ( max distance at my local club) and when i feel like driving to the family farm i shoot at 1100 yrds. ( not very good past 700yrds yet.)
>>
>>30786257
or because you just like them more

for me bolt actions are more fun to shoot. i also often slightly more accurate and more simple function
>>
>>30786540
sounds more like this is a plinking rifle than an innawoods rifle
>>
>>30786540
sorry for that butchered 2nd sentence
>>
>>30786547
why?
>>
>>30786554
>fun to shoot

if youre shooting for fun, then you're plinking (or doing srs target shooting, but that usually happens on a range rather than innawoods). an innawoods rifle is selected based on the requirements of the task. by this definition a plinking rifle can certainly be an innawoods rifle, if you are going innawoods to plink.

but when you use the term 'innawoods' without any modifier, i have to assume you're using it as a dangerous game defence rifle - which a bolt action .223 is not.
>>
>>30786615
>dangerous game defense rifle
if it was only for this purpose and not for a hunting (+ training) id just take some .375H&H or larger and not a semi in .223
>>
>>30786623
just depends on the type of dangerous game you plan on encountering, and the terrain.
>>
>>30783274
What happened to good old iron sights?
>>
>>30786711
>plan on encountering
definately

>wolf/coyote
handgun is enough

>bears/cougars/bison/elk
literally anything strong like i said in the other post
>>
>>30783792
that's waaaaaaaay bigger than 3 moa brah
>>
>>30786722
Generally one wants irons on a cheap entry level hunting rifle, people want them on niche battle rifles and shit like that
>>
>>30783274

A 3-9x40 scope would probably serve you better at 200 yards than any red dot and would probably be cheaper.

I had the same idea as you at first until I realized the benefits of seeing my target clearly.
