So guys i'm thinking about picking up one of these. The reasons are: I want to work on one, their cheap, their reliable.

Talk me out of it guys.

.45 you say? Why not go with superior Swiss engineering?

Actually, you might want to look around for "Mec-Tech" carbines. They're an upper that attaches to Glock pistols. Pretty neat.
>>
>>30782240
You need to be 21 in my state to own handguns; im not 21.

Selling the cheapest Sphinx made doesn't make a company Swiss.

why not buy a decent .45 pistol. Popular models have reasonably priced carbine kits you can install and remove as needed

West Virginia is 18. You can also legally travel there to purchase a pistol and bring it back, assuming the pistol fits into your state's laws (mag capacity, if any states require a permit to actually OWN a handgun). I live in a state where you just have to be 21 to purchase but not to own, also you have to follow the guidelines of transporting firearms state to state. WV doesn't allow CC until 21, but I can't think of any state that does.
>>
>>30783119
No familia, federal law only prohibits an FFL (ie. a gun shop) from selling any firearm other than a rifle or a shotgun to anybody under the age of 21. If state law doesn't explicitly prohibit it you can be gifted/inherit a handgun or buy from a private party legally. Even in CA you can legally be gifted a handgun from your parents at 18.
>>
>>30782201
are you sure that's a hipoint? because it doesn't look like absolute shit
>>
>>30783541
not true, not all states require you to be 18 for purchase

Hot damn what stock is that? Looks way nicer than factory
>>
>>30783684
>>30783567
That's an ATI aftermarket stock (the one that makes it look like that Beretta PPC) with the butt hacked off and replaced with the side folder off of a Vz58.
>>
>>30783635
That's just not true at all anon. Taken right from the 1968 GCA.

"(b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed
importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed
dealer, or licensed collector to sell or de-
liver—
(1)
any firearm or ammunition to any
individual who the licensee knows or
has reasonable cause to believe is less
than eighteen years of age, and, if the
firearm or ammunition is other than a
shotgun or rifle, or ammunition for a
shotgun or rifle, to any individual who
the licensee knows or has reasonable
cause to believe is less than twenty-one
years of age;"

https://web.archive.org/web/20091231162211/http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5300-4.pdf ( page 9, USC 922(b)(1) )

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_Control_Act_of_1968

If an FFL sells you a handgun and you're under the age of 21 then they're in violation of the GCA of 1968. However, the GCA doesn't apply to people who don't possess an FFL, making it legal for anybody not "engaged in the business" of selling firearms to sell a handgun to an 18 year old, providing state law doesn't explicitly prohibit it NOR requires an FFL to conduct the transfer for the citizens engaged in the sale.

The Hi-Point carbine is ok for what it is, but if you're looking for something to personalize and customize, you'd be better off by building an AR-15 in .45ACP instead, the end product would much better suit your purposes, I guarantee it.

If you get one of those stocks, and then get the RedBall mags, you would have a pretty ok 9mm carbine for a relatively low price.

Hi point is love, hi point is life.

Do it, OP. I've put hundreds of rounds thru my 995ts, with only a few hicups (shitty reloads)
>>
>>30784232
Redball only makes 9mm mags currently.
>>
>>30784612
>nobody gives a fuck what your age is in a private sale

No one is going to sell a handgun to someone under 21, let alone not even have a carry permit. In Iowa, any ad I see in armslist requires permit, even rifles. I don't think anyone wants to go thru the trouble of a 4473
>>
>>30782201
>9 round magazines
>higher capacity magazines are always shit unless there's been some improvements within the past couple years I'm unaware of
>weak feed lips on the stock magazines are easily damaged
>.45 ACP is a bit expensive if you're just using it for plinking without any real advantage over other cheaper handgun calibers
>.45 ACP drops faster than other handgun calibers, so it isn't ideal for longer range shooting with a carbine

>"Budget Gun"
>OP's pic

>>30787694
^This.

I'm also thinking about a Hi-Point because it's cheap, but if I could drop $600-700 and just wanted iron sights and magazine capacity I'd get a JRC and use glock mags... not a Hi-Point with spinnin rims.
>>
>>30787827
>No optic
Maybe he wants to shoot with iron sights. Hell, maybe that picture was from before the recent trend in good sub $200 optics.

>no light.
Why the fuck do you need a flashlight on what's most likely just a range gun?
>>
>>30787902
>wants to shoot with iron sights.
Then why get a Hi-Point and spend $300 on aftermarket shit?

If it was a pic with a $200 optic on a Hi-Point I'd go along with that. I might end up doing that myself.

If you want Iron Sights and you've got the money to cover the cost of a Hi-Point and a pile of aftermarket junk then you should get a JRC to use iron sights and better mags.
>>
>>30788073
>then you should get a JRC
On a quick reverse image search, the latest that image in the OP is from is 2011. The Just Right Carbine company was founded in 2009 and it was a less commonly talked about gun until more recently. The JRC also costs about as much as a CX4 Storm or a 9mm AR last I checked while still having all the annoying disassembly with tools that the Hi Point carbine has. It's also completely possible that the guy who owns the gun in the OP slowly added the other shit to the gun over time and did so because they thought it would be a fun project (it seems to be the point given the custom top rail and stock).

>but the post was made yesterday. lol
The picture that you were complaining about however was from 2011 at the latest. I'm tired of peopling thinking the gun market was always as it is right now when there have been significant changes in recent years. Hell, it wasn't long ago that AR-15s with polymer handguards outnumbered those with aluminum handguards and carry handles were still common.
>>
>>30782201
A friend of mine got one in .45, its pretty sweet.
The trigger is meh and the "recoil control stock" is fucking retarded. Oh and his front sight flew off three weeks after he got it new. Which was some funny shit, we couldnt breath we laughed so hard. But it went right back on and even stayed accurate after we tightened it.

Also Ive seen a drum mag that someone made out of a standard mag and some milsurp drum mag. But I hear you can modify 1911 mags.
>>
I can't understand our gun laws, so I need some help. I'm 19 and want a Hi-Point Carbine in 9mm. I remember something about someone under 21 not being able to purchase ammunition for handguns. If I get a Hi-Point Carbine, will I be able to purchase ammo for it?
>>
>>30782240
that abomination was designed in the US of A
>>
>>30782201
Why a 45 carbine? 45 isnt really a good cartridge from a carbine. Going from a 5 to a 16" barrel doesnt give a significant boost in velocity, you might as well just buy a 45 pistol.

I had a Mech tech carbine conversion- basically a rifle upper that I would attach my G41 lower to. It was kind of cool with the 30rd kriss mags but in the end I got rid of it all.

A 10mm carbine would be worthy. While theyre arent really any semi auto 357 mag carbines, that cartridge really really shines with a 16" barrel. I have some 164gr loads cooking along at 2025fps from my levergun.
>>
>>30782227
*They're >>30782240
>>
>>30790852
Do you know what a .357 fired from a rifle barrel would be equivalent to in terms of a rifle cartridge? I've heard of people being able to take medium game with .357 rifles (albeit from closer ranges) though I never knew what it's equivalent in a rifle caliber would be
>>
>>30790898
A good 357 load can exceed the energy you get from a 7.62x39 which is the most powerful of the common intermediate rifle cartridges. My 158gr xtp loads with H110 top out around 1725fps and 1043ft/lbs from a 16" levergun. I haven't chrono'd any jacketed loads with lilgun, but I have worked up a sweet little load with lilgun and a 164gr cast powder coated bullet. 2025 FPS and 1493 ft/lbs of energy.

Plenty of energy to take a deer. The pistol bullet design may not be ideal for over 100yd accuracy but hornady has their flex tip bullets for that specific purpose.

And yes, I practically beat off to the 357 mag cartridge.
