Are chrome-lined barrels necessary, specifically in an AR-style rifle?

I ask because I'm looking for an upper for the lower I just finished, and I don't really believe I'll shoot this enough to warrant the extra $100+ on a chrome-lined barrel instead of a straight melonite-treated chrome-moly barrel.

pic unrelated, obviously.

I think you answered your own question, anon.

I'm just wondering if there's anything I'm missing when it comes to chromed barrels.
>>

Go chrome or go home.

Go stainless, it's painless.

if youre precision shooting dont go chrome. if youre just plinking or hunting or nearly everything that isnt precision shooting, get chrome. chrome lining basically makes your barrel last longer and much easier to clean at the expense of being marginally less accurate.

there are also other options for lining your barrel but i dont know anything about those so hopefully a more knowledgeable anon will explain those

I own 6 ar15's
They all have match grade barrels, None are chrome lined. I have probably put 5000+ rounds through one of them and it is still a sub moa shooter. Hell I only even clean it once a year...
I'm pretty sure that unless you shoot a ridiculous amount - a chrome lined barrel is a waste unless you store a gun in a damp basement or house without air conditioning

From what I just read, nitride baths lead to a much harder barrel than chrome lining, but they aren't quite as thick as chrome lining. However, I also read that melanite barrels have a lower friction coefficient than chrome lined barrels.

I would personally go for the Masonite treated barrel, it may be slightly more accurate than the chrome lined barrel, and it'll be cheaper. I doubt you will shoot it smooth anytime soon, unless you like you like to shoot cases of ammo every weekend.

Bruh, I wanna learn how to whittle my own lower...
>>
>>30780958
No point unless you are firing on full auto or corrosive ammo.
>>
The kind of regressive mindset I'm seeing coming into play here is pretty funny
>>
>>30780958
chrome is only useful if you're going to be shooting full auto it helps your barrel last longer personally I try to get best accuracy possible so i dont do use it
>>
>>30782845
Doesn't chrome also hold up to full auto better than SS?
I think that transferred over to civilian market and just like how mil-spec to many people = DA BEST.
>>
>>30780958
TIN coated barrel. inside and out.
>>
I ended up going with a melonite treated barrel. I plan on having more than a few uppers, so I don't see myself shooting one of these out for a while.

Thanks everyone.

Nitrided barrel

>I don't know ANYTHING about the alternative so lets just repeat some shit I heard about chroming and definitively tell you that is the way to go.

Kek

>>30782845
The advantage for the vast majority of shooters is ease of cleaning, not the longevity.

>>30783872
Again, its largely for cleaning.

>>30786636
Probably a good choice
