I love my VP9 but I keep a far shittier gun in my car. One of those SCCYs (I got back when the warranty was good).

It's alright, Mec-Gar makes cheap mags and they're an OEM for Beretta. Get a D spring to lighten up the trigger. And with every handgun, make sure it fits your hand well, grips can help if it's too small, but only so much.

If you can, go for a 92G instead of the FS, it's decocker only.

I recommended the CZ85 (vs the P it is all steel). They are extremely comfortable to shoot and size is not an issue. They are very good handling, low recoil handguns in part because of the slide construction. The Walthers are also really good but the M2 came out because of complaints with the M1. The M1 will be significantly cheaper. The obvious change was the paddle release and grip (they both were perfectly fine to me) but the magazines between editions won't be interchangeable. The M1 will swap mags with the P99. All of them are solid for lefties. It's one of the reasons I went with a Ruger, the ambi controls are easy for left-handers. Firing right handed is much easier with a pistol than a rifle but the two hand grip never feels right. Either way it's a good skill to practice.

I was in the same situation as you OP and decided to pick up an unissued Detroit PD S&W M&P .40 for around $400.

Then I ordered a Stormlake .40 to 9mm conversion barrel along with three 9mm magazines.

Allows me to have a fully functional .40 and a 9mm (takes less than 2 minutes to switch barrels + magazine out).
