I always looked at these as a backup for a sidearm.

To run a Derringer, is to have another last ditch when your first last ditch is not usable. Something I'd run in an ankle holster under my jeans, or an inside jacket pocket while shoulder or hip carrying a medium or full size pistol in 9mm or .45. I quite like the concept of that really, but to be the only thing you carry seems pretty foolhardy.

But even with that being said, I'd still rather run a .25 or .32 semi-auto on my ankle than having just one or two shots in a break action pistol.

And even with that being said, something is always better than nothing.

The biggest problem with derringers now days is the way they're designed, in particular how they've strayed from the original intent which was to have as backup gun as small as possible. Now days however the new designs come from stoppingpower fags who think 2 rounds of 45 is better than 7 rounds of .380. I have no doubt that a modern derringer in .25/.32/.380 (whatever is enough to squeeze out the minimum acceptable penetration) that took advantage of modern materials to make it light/small enough that you could concealed carry it naked by squeezing it between your ass cheeks would sell and that people would actually consider them as a backup.

Hopefully you aren't talking about the Ruger American/Savage Axis. Those don't come with sights and require you to spend more for a decent scope that isn't shit so you can actually aim the rifle. One of those rifles in .223/.308 (so you can get inexpensive ammo) + a decent non shit scope + mounting hardware for said scope is going to set you back about $400 or more.

The original Masada design used AR-15 barrels and trigger packs, had a quick ch, 5.45/6.5/6.8/7.62x39 conversion kits available on day one, and an MSRP <$1500

Bushmaster delayed it for years, fucked with the design, and released a rifle with a fixed stock and 1/9 twist non-chrome lined barrel for $2600. I'm pretty sure they still haven't released any caliber coversion kits either.
