I'm curious as to how effective AT-AT's would really be. I mean, it seems it's only weakness are tow cables, lone saboteurs with a harpoon gun (and lightsabers), and Y-Wings (according to Batrlefront). Also keep in mind Rogue Squadron took heavy casualties at Jong, with only a few Snowspeeders actually managed to make the tow cable runs, many more got shot down. And all that firepower the Rebels threw at the Walkers didn't have any effect, even anti-vehicle batteries.
Assuming the Imperials could couple their Walkers with either TIE or a vehicle similar to a Snowspeeder to keep Speeders and Y-Wings away from the walkers, I can't see them as anything short of unstoppable.
>>
>>30776581
*Battlefront
>>
>>30776581
Lore states that AT AT's were almost indestructible and could shrug off literally any ground based weapons as well as fighter ship weapons and a good few photon torpedos, The snowspeeders only worked on Hoth because the Empire did not have TIEs supporting the ground troops, since they were all busy trying to destroy rebel transports.

AT ATs dominated every single battlefield they were placed on

Well, they're really slow, So I guess your best way to at least slow them down would be to, if the terrain allows it, block it's main legs movement with something, And disable their main cannons, The way AT-AT's are designed make them look like they'd have difficulties trying to turn and change directions.
>>
>>30776581
Also, I've always wondered, "Armored Transport" indicate that they're supposed to transport and disembark Stormtrooper troops, right?
How exactly are they supposed to get off and on the thing? There's very few exits, and they all seem really awkward to quickly reped down to, I have a Hasbro 3cm scale AT-AT toy, and the armor on the side can open up ( which is kind of dumb ), Anyways, There's no real safe and quick way to off it without the AT-AT folding it's legs or something, which would be incredibly awkward.
>>
>>30776694
I imagine it kneels for an entrance on the underside.
>>
>>30776694
Empire at War shows that the underside opens up and the troops rappel down. The Force Unleashed Ultimate Sith Edition shows that the side opens up, so it's anyone's guess
>>
>>30776694
They were (in canon) able to kneel for ease in loading/unloading people and gear. The games and some fan shows(see I.M.P.S.) show they repel troops out the sides in combat like fast-roping from a blackhawk with door gunners to provide cover fire. I'd imagine they mostly do this a bit away from any major fighting or after their main guns and the AT-ST escorts pushed rebel shit in first.

Digitigrade animals walk on their toes

they fucked up the atst because it is walking on feet and thus the way they articulated the legs is fucked and inefficient
>>
>>30776644
>>30777697

Both wrong. The neck is the one part of the AT-AT that's not shielded, and once it falls on its ass it's immobilized and the neck is easy to hit.
>>
>>30777837
That's just because they were designed later even though they are supposed to have existed before.

In other words, shit designers who can't into immersing in the setting, so they do shit that don't fit in or make sense.
>>
>>30777837
On the other hand the ATST has the side mounted weapons which presumably do have at least a 360 degree coverage and some lateral movement
>>
>>30772951
Mythbusters did a recreation with logs that were roughly the size of the ones in Star Wars(basically redwoods), they punched straight through the sides of an armored car, not sure if they could do the same to actual military grade armored vehicles but trees that size moving that fast pack some serious kinetic energy, especially when they're impacting opposite sides simultaneously

AT-TE's were pretty sensible.

Actually, most of the walkers in the Clone Wars era made sense. The little scout walkers clearly accommodated the role of their riders, for example. It was only the Empire that made stupid shit.
>>
>>30776581
Their only security was supposedly impenetrable armor, which was clearly bullshit. More likely, they were only deployed under highly specific conditions against underpowered enemies and controlled media situations. They thought a one way trip to a shield generator against infantry, infantry scale turrets, and jumped up speeders would be okay, but they didn't take into account innovative use of tow cables or some idiot with an ancient instant win sword.

ATATs are also moral/psychological weapons. One of their main points is that they strike fear due to their size.

Especially when you consider the fact that the empire doesn't have anone nearly on its own power scale to fight against.

Imagine being a 2bit farmer defending from the infidels and you see that bad boy on the horizon.

1. The odd bipedal unguligrade legs are not as good as humanoid ones. Our legs are pretty much the best in mobility and energy efficiency for bipedal designs found in nature.

2. The waist assembly is oddly unarmored for some reason. At the very least cover it in tarp or rubber to prevent dirt from getting in.

3. Lack of external (visual / IR) cameras and a reliance on the simple square viewports on the front causes it to have a severe lack of situational awareness and creates some relatively large vulnerable spots on the front. This flaw may have been partly responsible for their failure in noticing gigantic piles of Endorian trees that could have been easily avoided.

4. The side guns and launchers could stand to be mounted a bit closer to the frame and covered in armor, but they aren't too bad. Mounting them higher up to the top corners of the torso / head would help them be used from cover while minimizing exposure of the mech. The chin blaster also could benefit from a gimbal mount but the AT-ST proved to be pretty quick to turn its head around so this isn't a big issue.

Had these four flaws not been present on the AT-ST, I think they would have fared much, much better in all of their appearances in the original trilogy. Even if they were to be knocked down by the same rolling log trap, a more robust humanoid leg system would have had an easier time getting it back on its feet.

The reason they didn't have fighter support is because the rebels had a shield generator.
The AT-AT's were deployed in the first place because they had to land outside of the shield and walk into it, flying into the shield would have been impossible.
Air support arrived after the AT-AT's downed the shields.
>>
>>30776581
Couldn't someone with a jetpack or hell even Star Wars equivalent of a helicopter just fly on top of the back, drop whatever their version of C4 or Thermite is on some weakpoints, and then blow it up?
>>
>>30773928
Yes, because it can actually do something, and has actual armor.
>>
>>30785134
So land the TIEs on the AT-ATs and use tractor beams to hold them in place. Cart along some dedicated AA platforms that can cover the air, not a forward arc, or even give the troops some AA missiles.

This is all shit we've figured out WITHOUT shields to block us, and without several thousand years of a reasonably constant tech level.
>>
I just realized another flaw. Star wars makes use of Sci fi inertial dampeners to make up for the fact that their dogfights would liquefy anything that wasn't IG88. How do the pilots of AT-STs who don't have that pivot the turrets like they'd have to in the movies or real combat without vomiting constantly?

>>30785404
