If you can't get a gun, and want something bladed, just get the biggest machete or kukri you can find. They all run pretty cheap, and the bigger, the better.

If you're scared that you will accidentally injure yourself with it, then it's good enough.

Had some fucker breaking into my garage, dont have any good weapons for home defense, so I just called the cops. TO bad it took them 35 minutes to drive 35 kilometers.

Hammer. A heavy, solid, old one. Get using it on things.

Keep it by you when you're asleep. Bash the fuck out of anyone who breaks in. You can stab someone and slash them a lot whilst they're still going at you, but Mike Tyson couldn't take a hammer blow to the forehead.

Home defense? Gladius or Rapier. You don't want something that you have to swing because space is limited.

A short spear that can also be used for hacking like a hewing spear on a short shaft or the cold steel short assegai are going to be about as good as it gets, if you have the room a full length spear or a polearm that can thrust well would be better

Next is swords, in tight areas the short sword is best, like a gladius when the romans fight in tight formations or cutlasses that had to be used on deck or bellow, a longer swords would work but thrusting is going to be your main focus, it can be used in hallways, or to keep people from pushing through a doorways

Blunt weapons work well too but take more consideration, shorter clubs will typically be more maneuverable indoors but they give up power and reach, longer clubs will require you to take up positions where you can't get smothered, baseball bats, pickaxe handles and hammers (rip, ball peen and rock hammers) with long handles have all been popular makeshift weapons

Tomahawks and regular hatches work well too, if you don't want to chop them you could just smack them with the poll, wood cutting axes are generally too heavy to be useful but a war axe with a thin bit is quick enough to be used

Quality machete are cheaper and more available than quality swords and they can be explained away since they are tools, thin blades like on typical Latin style flex too much on harder targets like bone, get something with either a thicker blade like the Ontario machete or kukri or get something with a wide blade like a cane knife in order to split bone more reliably

Bows and crossbows are workable too Remember, the weapon is never be as important as the user, a guy with a broken broomstick and the will to use it will scare off more criminals than a cowering man holding a backsword, if they don't think you are willing to hit them with your weapon they will be very brave but if you keep swinging wild while running after them they will scatter

Really, the purpose of thrown weapons is not to kill, though, but to distract your opponent while you close in.

Antique black powder guns, get a old double barrel shotgun or a blunderbuss type thing and load the damn thing up with as much shot as possible.

Consider it a one use directional mine more then a firearm, so a pole to tie it to and a string to pull the trigger might be a good idea.
