If you've ever pointed a taclight at someone at night you'd know it pretty much instantly blinds them and causes them to slam their eyes shut and look away. At that point if they're not on drugs they can find out which basic direction you're in, but that's about it.

That's just how the eye works. At night it adjusts to the dark and any light introduced to it will cause it to become slightly overloaded, but that's nothing compared to getting a taclight pointed directly at your eye. That will blind you for at least a second.

I have a light on my nightstand. When there is a bump in the night, I grab my gun AND the light. One of the rules of safe gun handling is to not point your weapon at anything you're unwilling to destroy. You must constantly break this rule if your flashlight is attached to your weapon.
