Does anyone on /k/ have a 55x series rifle? Do you like it, what are your experiences? I'm planning on (later on) buying a 551a1 and putting a swiss lower on it, then calling it good.
>>
>>30761841
Used a 550 during my military service. I love the drum sight and the rifle's overall sturdiness. Ergos are ok - they are a mix of AR selector, AR bolt release, FAL gas regulator, AK mag catch and AK reciprocating charging handle. What I didn't like was the length and the weight. Also, while the rifle is of high quality, the gas tube can rust even with care - which I find not something acceptable on a 3000 bucks rifle.
>>
>>30761958
I wonder if that issue could be fixed with clearcoat?

I have one.

The good:

>Accuracy
>Reliability
>Diopter sights
>Folding stock

The bad:

>Expensive as fuck, since for the same price you can get a better rifle. 3500 USD for a rifle like this? lol no.
>Lower starts to wobble a lot after several years of use
>Not made for modularity, every aftermarket piece is expensive
>Made for prone shooting and this can be seen with the weight of the rifle
>Mags are expensive as fuck, 80 Swiss Francs a piece

Basically this rifle is revered by people that: a) Never used any other high quality semi auto rifle in 5.56; b) Think that Unobtainium = Holy Grail because they can't own one.

It's not a bad rifle. It's used widely in Switzerland for sports shooting due to the fact that only a handful of other rifles are allowed for 300 meter shooting competitions.

If our shooting federation decided to let people use other 5.56 NATO rifles they would see how overpriced this rifle really.
>>
>>30761972
You just have to clean that shit every time you shoot.

But it does rust very easily due to the water condensation from shooting.
>>
>>30762011
>Never used any other high quality semi auto rifle in 5.56
Very few other service rifles are that high quality though, that's why people like them. Well made is nice.
>>
>>30762011
Yes, I fully agree. The price is totally exaggerated. A simple rail section to mount on the upper receiver is around 100 bucks. The railed handguard made by B&T is like 300 bucks. Mags range from 60 to 100 bucks a piece. Fuck me!
>>
>>30762011
How accurate is yours at 100m?
>>
>>30761841
I'd like to get one, but they're a bit expensive.
>€3k for a new SG550
I could be buying a lot of nice shit with that much.
>>
Ex 556 swat owner here

>Recoil is more harsh than an AR, but not as much as a ptr93 (fuck that shit mang)
>just as accurate as a basic bitch AR
>reliable as shit if it's clean
>trigger is heavier than necessary
>bolt release is wonky
>grip isnt the most comfortable
>folding stock is comfy and noice
>not a fan of the safety but there's nothing wrong with it
>expensive

They're good rifles but there's no objective reason to choose one over an AR if it's a first/only rifle deal.

If it's all you can get, or all that you want, it'll serve you gladly
>>

Murrikan made junk need not apply.
>>
>>30764364
I want to add it in with my other rifles. I always have a hankering for euro guns.
>>
swiss here, i have a sig 550, good rifle and good quality, It is a precise weapon.

cleaning needs to function well

HK93, C93... I'm assuming.

yeah I fucked up, i meant >>30764785

>>30764380
yeah the country of manufacture changes the design of the function of the rifle
>>
>>30764985
No, but it does change the quality. For the worse.
>>
>>30765009
But that's not enough to change how the gun works
>>
>>30765290
It doesn't change how the rifle work but it does change its accuracy and reliability
>>
>>30765290
Quality has nothing to do with how a gun works anon, it impacts performance
>>
>>30764166
Never shot it at that range. It's accurate enough at 300 meters to get me some prizes, it might need a new barrel soon though.
>>
>>30765437
How many rounds did you fired with your barrel? If you use the army steel bullets you have to change it very 1000 rounds
>>
>>30765491
Around 4K or so. I don't buy into that 1k rounds thing, that's Fudd myths in my opinion.

Most barrels either of the 510 and 550 have a 10k round count after they stop being crap for shooting sports.
>>
>>30761958
Have you used the 553?
>>
>>30761841
I used to (living in France), sold it to buy a Sig M400. No regrets.

I have a Sig 551 SB, no regrets there. It's pretty damn great. Not perfect though. I bought mine when it was 2100 euros. Now it's 3250 euros here, and I really wouldn't tell anyone to buy it at that price.

I don't like the Sig 550 because it's too long & front heavy.

There was a recent thread at opchan about this too, where a canadian posted some measurements that might interest you: http://www.operatorchan.org/k/res/98107.html
Really highlights how anal the swiss can be when making guns.

>>30761841
>I'm planning on (later on) buying a 551a1 and putting a swiss lower on it, then calling it good.

What does that solve? It's the upper that's mostly subpar to swiss standards. The american lowers aren't really that bad (save for the 7.62x39 models which were retarded as steel mags wore out the alu lower).
(can't comment on the american triggers though, I guess these might be a let down)

>>30764438
>Needs to be cleaned to function well

I've run mine dirty as fuck. Didn't clean it for a year as a test. Never even a hickup.
Granted, I didn't go roll through the mud, nor did I fight in the desert, but that seems weird. The Sig 55X has a reputation for extreme reliability in all environments.

does what i want it to do out to 500 yards, only major downside is weight.
>>
>>30762011

>other high quality semi auto rifle in 5.56

Hate to be that guy, but I doubt that there are any of similar quality that you can buy straight from the factory.
>>
>>30761841
The US ones are heavy, made awful, have rattle everywhere from the stock to the handguard, and they're not exceptionally accurate compared to today's standards

They aren't exceptionally durable either.
>>
>>30766695
The hell there aren't.

Any high quality AR will outperform the 550 on pretty much everything. I've personally seen a guy use a random Hera Arms AR at our range using GP90 and he had pretty much the same or better scores on all the types shootings he did compared to Stgw 90s and Stgw 57s.
>>
>>30766855

>"straight from the factory"
>high end custom built AR

pick one, bud
>>
>>30766695
Any run out of the mill AR15 will achieve the same thing.
>>
>>30767090

As will an INSAS, for roughly 5 mags. That doesn't mean its quality is as high as that of an AR or SG550.
>>
>>30767090
Achieve what, subMOA accuracy and AK-tier reliability? Sure.
>>
NON-FREEFLOAT BARREL.

It's an outdated design without the modularity of AR-15s.

Good for collecting thought, aesthetics mainly.
>>
>>30767622
>NON-FREEFLOAT BARREL.
Just like an AR, then.
>>
>>30767725
The thing is, you can get an ar15 with a free floating barrel, even change the barrel to a different size, type and quality.

With the 550? Good luck with that unless you want to buy a new upper for almost the price of a new rifle and even then it's just the standard 550 barrel, there's no other option.
>>
>>30767828
>The thing is, you can get an ar15 with a free floating barrel, even change the barrel to a different size, type and quality
>what is gas tube
>>
>>30761958
If it rust, it's because you use the green "sponge" to clean the gas tube you dumbfuck..
I properly take care of mine during my military service and it has never rusted (I was in the infantry so my rifle has seen pretty shitty situation.

A swiss lower will cost you $1000 and the rifle will cost you $1500-2000. If American, just buy the 553 pistol and then sbr it later down the road. Get the real deal and not an abortion of a design.
