Actually Rhodesians suffered remarkably few casualties compared to the Communist/Terrorist forces they were fighting. That's part of the reason the Mugabe's terrorists largely targeted civilian farmers.

Rhodesia A History

A Summary
To sum it all up, Ian acted like a douchebag, and Mugabe was a filthy commie as always. Ian realized his decision to keep blacks from voting via educative and economic discrimination would lead to his downfall. Thus he made a deal with moderate Black Nationalists Parties called the "Internal Settlement". The deal was to relax the economic and education requirements to vote, thus allowing blacks that aren't in the upper and middle class to get into voting. The Rhodesian Front then dissolved the government of Rhodesia, and started new elections.

The new government ended up with a compromise of the name Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, with the first Black president and Prime Minister named Josiah Gumede and Abel Muzorewa respectfully. The UANC Party (United African Council) composed a majority in the common roll seats (With Ndabaningi's ZANU filling twelve seats) while Ian's Rhodesian Front won the old voter roll seats (A total of 10, with five members being tribal chiefs) and were responsible for Agriculture, Finance, Transportation and Power, Justice and Posts. The rest were either under the UANC, ZANU, or UNFP. Thus for the first time ever, Blacks were finally equal to whites without having to join the military.

Mugabe, however, got butthurt that his political party wasn't the ruling party despite having twelve seats in Parliament. He accused Zimbabwe-Rhodesia being a puppet government for the whites which led to UN and British Intervention for the new government to dissolve and allow another election under the Lancaster House Agreement. This led to a call for the government and ZANU/ZAPU to surrender arms. The government under Muzorewa followed but Mugabe fooled the British and UN. He later ordered his men to threaten and terrorize the local population to vote for him, leading to him to win the government and parliamentary majority than the UANC and RF. At first the UANC and RF composed a plan to form a coup if Mugabe won, but were dropped due to world reaction

The Aftermath Under Mugabe

When Mugabe was in power, he formed s coalition government with the white minority and his political rival, the ZAPU party. The Rhodesian Security Forces were merged with the guerrillas forming the Zimbabwe Defense Force, under the the eyes of Joshua Nkomo. However, Mugabe faced torment in keeping his coalition stable and expecting social changes from his followers, this lead fighting between ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas, which worsened in 1983, when Mugabe fired Nkomo's cabinet position watching them. This lead to the Ndeble people to get pissed, leading to a 3 year civil war between ZAPU and ZANU. Under the Gukurahundi operations, ZAPU forces were crushed through acts of genocide and public executions under Mugabe's forces in Matabeleland (Which is ironic, since the Matabelelands had representation in the old government).

After resistance was crushed, infighting between ZANU and ZIPRA continued until Mugabe merged the parties together as ZANU PF and gave himself more execuetive powers as president, ending the prime minister office and establishing a dictatorship. He then further removed the lands of white farmers and gave them to his close supporters, while discriminating on whites and having his political party attack and harass the farmers. This led to a diaspora and mass migrations of whites out of Zimbabwe. In the end, the migrations of white farmers out of the country led to Mugabe's close supporter to be responsible for agriculture. Surprise, surprise, famine struck and they starved since they have no teaining or knowledge of plantation or industrial farming. Leading to another following report of Mugabe begging whites to return to Zimbabwe, since they have difficulty paying for foreign aid thanks to communist economics.

Now that the summary is cleared up, let me get some facts pulled out here. As I stated earlier in the summary:

In the end, the Rhodesian government had to sped up the equal rights process due to the dire situation of the Bush War. The very own government dissolved Rhodesia, and made the new Zimbabwe-Rhodesian government that was elected under both blacks and white giving out the first Black president and prime minister under the names of Josiah Gumede and Abel Muzorewa respectively under the political party of the United African National Council (UANC) that worked along Ian's Rhodesian Front. Meanwhile, Ndabaningi Sithole's ZANU won twelve seats. Had the world acknowledged them and had the Brits respected the election results, Zimbabwe wouldn't be the commie shithole it is today under Mugabe since he wasn't included. It's all the fault of the British and their Lancaster Agreement for allowing Mugabe's ZANU in the first place when they were clearly supported by the communists and responsible for the war crimes of terrorizing both Black and White civillians, young and old, women and children. There was a reason why Mugabe's ZANU wasn't allowed in, yet the Brits let them in anyways due to the elections being "unfair" from the mouth of Mugabe himself, despite ZANU winning twelve seats.

It was through the Internal Settlement Plan that the Rhodesian National Front and Moderate Black Nationalist Parties agreed to compromise. This resulted in a relaxing of educational, property and income standards that resulted in a black majority electorate. With a joint government work in the RF, the Rhodesian Front role under Muzorewa were Ministers in Finance, Agriculture, Transportation and Power, Posts, and Justice. Ian Smith worked under Muzorewa as a Minister Without Portfolio alongside other moderate African parties. In the end, it wasn't Rhodesia that lost, it was Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, as the original government of Rhodesia was dissolved and new elections and a mew constitution was made under the new elected government. In terms or battle and territory defended, Zimbabwe-Rhodesia won the war, but lost to Mugabe's lawyers.

Considering the fact that Muzorewa was in power and votes by blacks alike, he was legit the best option to continue the nation. Do you not know who Abel Muzorewa is? Do you not realize that ZANU had twelve seats in Convgress while the UANC had more seats in. Also:
