Pretty much this. Honestly though, I'd put a Hi-Point as better out of the box than a $500 AR because the Hi-Point has everything it needs in order to be used when you buy it. A $500 AR will be a firing rifle, but it will not have a dust cover, forward assist, optics of any kind, possibly more. I guess it counts as an AR

The answer is that AR15s require zero R&D to produce. Producing a quality pistol and getting it to sell takes a ton of work and money. Plus $600 will get you some of the sweetest pistols on the market. I bought the one you've pictured for $350 brand new. $500 will get you a lower base level AR with no sights on it.
