Rare weapons and equipment of the Second World War.

This ones interesting, the Zielgerät 1229, the first night vision assessory for a gun. Used in the burning streets of Berlin in 1945, it was ment to give the Germans a little bit of an advantage, the "Nacht Jägers" that held this assessory were very rare to see, and not many of them survive today.

I forgot what this one was called but it gave you the ability to fire through corners without getting shot.

This one's pretty rare, only appeared towards the end of the war.

"Karl, what happened to your sturmgewehr?"
"Hold on Franz, I can fix this."

And thus the Krummlauf was born.

As I recall hearing it broke the bullets up and had a "shotgun effect"

That would pretty much break the bullets into little bits and create a shotgun-like effect.

Sniper grade m1's. Supposedly they were the 'sniper-grade' m1's that were tested several times and then sent to England before US boots on the ground in WWII. I heard somewhere that maybe 1 in 5,000 had the chance of being machined precisely enough to be sniper-grade.

Contrary to popular belief its unlikely the US T3 and T120 Image intensifiers are based on the 1229.

The 1229 and T3/120 are both active Infrared image intensifiers, but the two were developed around the same time and saw use only mere months apart. While the 1229s first use was in mid February 1945 on the eastern Front, the T3/120 was used by US troops in the Pacific theater in early April of the same year. The T3/120 didnt gain the reputation the 1229 did because in the wash and generally unforgiving sea environment of the Pacific, the 1229 didnt have to ocntewnd with that.

Too,m the employment of the systems was dramatically different. The 1229 was issued to Grenadiers who became tasked with closing with the German infantry unit and engaging more accurately under close range with assistance of the Squads MG-42/34 providing suppressing fire. The US used the T3/120 for snipers almost exclusively

It IS likely the US program drew from German Infrared weapons sights, probably on vehicles and some captured small arms examples forwarded to them by the USSR, who, while interested in them, had neither the means, capacity or real desire to work on them: Their PAU-2 system was effective, and easier to manufacture in all likelihood than the German systems, for what was really of little benifit at that point in the war (1942/43/44).
Heres my contribution:

The Zk-383 was a Czech Submachinegun designed to be dual role for both infantry support and close assault. Firing fum an open bolt with a mass-variable fire rate of about 500-750 rounds/minute, the Zk-383 combined common trends seen in Machinne Guns and Submachineguns of the era into a single weapon. The canted magazine well allows for easy loading in prone, marching or erect positions of fire. The bipod provides a stable ,supporting shooting position and a perforated barrel jacket aids in cooling, in addition to a quick change barrel of sorts.

The sights are graduated for a somewhat optimistic 800 meters. Chambered in 9x19mm, with a 325mm barrel, 9x19mm would be effective at engaging point targets to 150-200 meters, while remaining effective at suppressing areas at distances to 300-400 meters with a skilled gunner in the right position. A bit forward thinking fro the time, but ultimately proving to be insufficient.

As the Zk-383 was Czechoslovakian and mainly by the Brno (After German occupation, Waffenwerke Brünn) factory, the Zk-383 saw use with several German units during the war, mostly rear echelons, but it is likely the weapon saw use with the Fallschirmjäger and some SS units at the front. The Bulgarian Army was another notable user, though to what degree I am unsure.

There are few of these in the US, the last one sold for $43,125USD. Ian has a video up on his channel, Forgottenweappons, that might have been used by the guards at the Brno plant.

This is my effective white whale of the small arms world. I shot one in 2008 and they are amazing, and such an odd bit of small arms history. Id love to own one, semi-auto or NFA, at some point.

Rarest camouflage of WW2.
It was supposed to be the first all terrain camouflage, it was the first camouflage to be used by the Wehrmacht and the SS.
It's called Liebermuster.

> The bent barrel attachments had very short lifespans – approx. 300 rounds for the 30° version, and 160 rounds for the 45° variant–as the barrel and bullets fired were put under great stress. Another problem besides the short life-span was that the bending caused the bullets to shatter and exit the barrel in multiple fragments, producing an unintended shotgun effect. As a result, weapons designers experimented with small vent holes drilled into the Krummlauf's barrel in order to reduce pressure and recoil, allowing the discharged bullets' built-up gases to be released to slow the bullet's velocity as it turned to exit the barrel. Nevertheless, the Krummlauf's lifespan remained the same.

Bit of Necrotic here but I'm sure night /k/ will have more.

Lichtenstein radar systems were some of he Luftwaffes earliest airborne radar. They game in several revisions, designated FuG, short for Funk-Gerät, or Radio Set.

The distinctive antenna set was called the Matratze, or mattress. The earliest airborne variation, the FuG 202 B/C, had a power output of 1.5 kW and operated at the 61cm wavelength. The antennas were complecated, consisting of thirty-two dipole elements, mounted in four groups of eight, each at the forward end of one of four masts.

The Second set, FuG 212 C-1, was recovered by the British from a defecting Junkers Ju-88 R-1. It operated in high UHF spectrum as well, but had longer range and wider search area while still using the complex mast system of FuG 202. I don't know if they were the same antenna or not. With the radar system safely in Brush hands, the Brits wandered all FuG systems basically obsolete for several weeks.

The final variation, the FuG 220 SN-2, was much improved and operated at a significantly lower frequency but had such a huge minimum range (500m) the retention of the radar masts from the FuG 202/12s were kept, in addition to the massive antenna of the new system; the drag was such that it became a huge issue, so the use of the new system was cut down, utilizing only a single pair of older masts with the new Hirschgeweih antennas, which slowed the aircrafts top speed by 50km/h. In 1944 the Brits captured a set as well.

There's quite a lot to be said about the sets, and they aren't the only sets the Luftwaffe used, but they were among the most common and effective.
