Alright /k/ I here looking for some advice.
I want to get into long range shooting so I went and picked up a Ruger Precision rifle. It might have been an impulse buy...(went in for a tuck-able holster)
Anyways, got the rifle but realized I know next to nothing of shooting past 200 yards. SO, im here looking for advise/reading material that anyone can suggest along with recommendations on optics for reaching out past 500yards.
>>
>>30752753

>>
Should've gotten a Tikka
>>

>>
http://demigodllc.com/articles/practical-long-range-rifle-shooting-equipment/?p=1

follow all 8 pages then go to part 2 and so on.

also go to youtube and look for Tiborasaurus Rex and all his videos, he knows how to shoot long range and does a good job explaining it.

Thanks alot, I'll dive into this when I get home from work tonight.
>>
First thing's first, what caliber did you get? Either case, it's a great rifle, but it'd be neato if it is a 6.5CM.

Next, you'll need a scope. For less than a thousand, buy this:
http://www.primaryarms.com/primary-arms-414x44-mil-mil-ffp-scope/p/pa4-14xffp/

For a thousand bucks, buy this: http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-pst-6-24x50-ffp-riflescope-with-ebr-2c-mrad-reticle/reticle

For more than a thousand bucks, buy this:
($2500) http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/razor-hd-gen-2-45-27x56-riflescope-with-ebr-2c-mrad-reticle/reticle

For the latter two, buy vortex's precision match/ground scope rings, get a bipod and a rear bag then start shooting.
>>
Vortex optic and rings, Harris bipod, and start shooting
>>
>>30753393
Start out by buying some Federal Gold Metal Match (FGMM) if it's 308; don't bother with 168gr, go to 175gr ammo. I think Federal also does 6.5CM, but if not, Hornady does. You're probably going to want to get into reloading at some point, so keep that in mind and save your brass.
>>
Also, what altitude are you going to be shooting at?
>>
>>30753133
>Tiborasaurus Rex
I think of Tibby as the hickok45 of long range shooting. Good Guide and extremely detailed. Some of his Caliber Selection sheets are a bit out of date but explanations are right on.
>>
>>30753393
I got the .308, was gonna get the 6.5 but Im not far enough in yet to have a reloading set up and I've never seen 6.5 forsale around me.

Thanks for the scope suggestions,
I was looking at http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1362428898/leupold-mark-ar-mod-1-rifle-scope-6-18x-40mm-1-10-mil-adjustments-adjustable-objective-matte
but decided to wait a bit and get some more reading in before I bought anything
>>
As someone who has the RPR in 65 Godmoor I prefer to use Hornady 143 ELDX or the 140 ELD-M factory loads. I am probably 600 rounds in and I am hitting 900 Yards easy on a Vortex PST 6x24 FFP. I have its very easy to run out of dope at times and have to use the EBR2C reticle at times. Makes it easy. Also Get a Nikon Kilo 2000 Range Finder.

Also Learn to Strelock. Its your Friend.

Should have been 6.5 Godmode

thats 2 votes for the vortex. looks like I may just wait a little longer and get it.
I'll start reading up on strelock.

Its a Free App for your phone and it will give you every little dope correction you need. Also Look at other apps like GPSstatus for Elevation. You may want to get a kestral in the near future as well. But having Digital Dope charts is extremely easy.
>>
Alright /k/ I have to had back to work for 6 more hours, if the thread is still up I'll be taking more notes. If not, Thank you all for the helpful info and suggestions I got more than I expected.
>>
>>30753610
thank you,
what scope mount is that?
>>
>>30753643
The Scope mount is a Team Warne Scope. its a good mount but I prefer the Burris QD mount that I have on my AR over it. QD is really nice for backpacking with my Backback as it has a Vertical Camel pouch for water that is Lined and fits my scopes perfectly.
>>
>>30753018
For someone who would like to get into long range target shooting, what model Tikka's should I be looking into?
>>
>>30753393
Other mentions

>Falcon 4-14 FFP - $350-400

What the Primary Arms is a rebranded version of, illuminated mil has is a little more expensive

>SWFA 3-15 SS FFP - $700
Lots of good features

>Sightron 6-24 FFP - $1000-ish

You get more adjustment but no zero stop or christmas tree reticle

>Burris XTR II 4-20 - $1100-1300

10 Mil turrets, FFP, many great features

>Bushnell Elite Tactical 3.5-21x - $1250-$1400

5 Mil, lockable turrets, no zero stop. G2DMR christmas tree reticule

The newer T3x's are reallly nice. Good rifle all around. Choose the caliber and paintjob to your Spec. Also always go for the higher quality Match Barrel.

For your RPR please note that if you get a 6-9
inch Bipod 10round magazines will be the best size if you starting off at bench rest setups. 6 to 12's will be good for 20/25 round Magazines.

Watch Magpul's Precision Rifle videos. Very easy to digest, and covers a lot. I like Tiborasaurus, but I found it to be a bit too in depth for new precision shooters. Don't disregard it, just bookmark for later.

people liked that magpul vid? i felt like it was the worst one since it was overly reliant on specific gear. you use this scope with this reticle if you dont have this reticle here is the other option. if your scope is nether well shiiit now go plug this into your ballistic calculator. what what.
now you can just get an free app for that but back when the vids came out nada
>>
>>30754453
I didn't get that impression at all. No offense, bit did you watch all of it? They covered many common reticles and gear. During the practical exercises, the shooters used loaner gear Accuracy 1st, so it's going to be high speed stuff. But I think they did a good job covering many types of gear.

That's the complicated way to calculate range on a mildot. Why explain it like this?
>>
>>30753469
.308 is like an 800m round so 18x is pretty great. The biggest thing in an optic is that it HAS to be FFP (first or forward focal plane) and adjustable paralax is important too.
>>
>>30757659
You can take .308 out to over a grand.

I have the Bushnell ET6245FG 6-24X50 FFP that will go onto my RPR 308 when it arrives (Ausfag so another 4 months).

For now its on my Lithgow LA102 CrossOver 308 and has a great view up to 800 yards no problem.
>>
>>30758369
You can, but it's not optimal. Out of all but the longest barrel, it starts to go transonic around 800-900 yards (typically), and you can't rely on it after that
>>
>>30758720
+1 on what this guy says. I had my first one for 2.5 yrs and then the turret went dead on me, but so what since Bushnell has a forever warranty that now covers stupid just like vortex. Anyways it went dead and sent it back in, they sent me out a new one, checked SNs and the new one tracks true out to 15 mils, within 1/10 which is fine by me since its only on a 308.

If you are wanting a starter scope the best imo is SWFA 10x ($300). they come with 36 mils of total elevation adjustment which is just insane and allows you to use it for a starter rig and then move it over to a 22lr later when you buy a better scope for your main gun. I have a swfa 10x on a 22lr and take it out to 300yds, once I get my 40 moa base I'll have enough added elevation that I'll be able to go out to 400yds.

Just as a side note 22lr subsonic roughly equates to a 1:4 ratio for supersonic 308, for both drop and wind. so 22lr subs at 100yds is like shooting a 308 @ 400yds, so on and so forth.

Also OP if you want youtubers to watch look at 8541 tactical and check out the MCM for info.

He also does gear testing and reviews. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGBYzbnSYGE

>>30757507
I don't know why, hopefull someone else will know, but I found that 175 gr Sierra Federal is the best 308 I have put through my Precision. It is the most accurate ammo I have shot. PPU 168 is good plinking ammo, but I only recommend it for plinking large steel targets. If you want tight groups, wear tight pants and shoot 175 match grade ammo.

German guy here. I got the RPR gen 1 (waited almost a whole year for it because our laws and markets are fucked) in .308win.
Originally wanted the Creed, but it cannot be found anywhere here and i do not reload myself. So sadly that is no option.

I got my zeiss v8 hooked onto it and plan on shooting it the first time during the next week. It is my first long rifle ever. Did i do good?

>>
>>30763075
And extremely worth it. I don't know of many rifles that can predictably Pick Flowers at 1000 Yards. I have done it with by 18008 Variant. I also know there are two RPR's with in 10 miles of me for sale. One in .243 and the other in 308. The 243 is Gen 1 and is going for about 850. The 308 Gen 2 is going for about1200 I believe. I purchases my Gen 2 Creedmoor for 1300 online with some finagling here than there. I got the rfle with shipping/transfer/Use fee for about 1500 USD + the cost of my Glass. Still worth it and If they came out with one in 338 Lapua I would Buy it instantly.

I've shot 1000 yrd course at Camp Perry & 600 yrds is the norm slow fire on an NRA course (reduced targets for shorter ranges). Rules are: irons only, baring disability. So, advice? Learn to shoot. Scopes are for faggots and casuals. Go out and participate in som NRA NM courses, join a club where you can learn from some old timers, practice. Scopes don't do shit for you if you don't have the basics of wood against wood and trigger control down, particularly at yardage.

Optics.

Swfa 3-15ffp or a vortex viper line ffp line.

Get a mildot master

Get a good bipid ( harris or atlas) not a knock off. Preferably one that swivels

Buy a mildot master

Get match ammo or start reloading

Get a kestral ( not the super fancy one.a lower end one is all you need, for wind speed and humidity and altatude)

A laser range finder is your friend for unknown sized targets

A chroni if you are reloading

Build some density altitude charts and drop charts

Watch the tyranisossus rex youtube sniper 101 videos.

Practice.

After 1000rds ditch the barrel and buy a better one, and any other tifle upgrades you want or step into a better gun.

>>30767723

>>
>>3077048
The atlas is more expensive. But it is a more refined bipod. No exposed spring ability to have legs at many locked in positions from -180-0 at 45° intervals.

You can add leg height with simple add in tubes. You can swap feet with out any fuss.

It is, like i said more expensive.

The harris mounts to a swivil studm if you dont have a stud ir want to use it on a rail add that adaptor to the cost. That said the swivel harris bipods with a pod lock are also fantastic. And are my goto for a hunting rifle i am taking afield. I can remove tje bipod and use my sling to hike in. Take off my sling and mount the bipod in 20 secs then set up and hunt.

For a hilly area. I love my sitting height harris

I have both. I have a harris on my 22lr bolt action, and my light weight alpine hunting rifle. Where i take a lot of shots down hill in a seated position.

I have my atlases on my range and precision rifles.
>>
>>30770487
>>30772842

I have an atlas bt46. It deploys slow. But I like it because you can preload. For a heavy precision rig, I'd recommend the Harris since you don't need to preload as much and use the weight as recoil dampener, or you can keep the atlas deployed at all times.

OP, watch all the Sniper 101 videos (in order) on Tiborasaurus Rex's channel on YouTube. They are awesome and he breaks long range shooting down in intricate detail, probably moreso than most people will need. Be sure to watch them in order. Don't cherry pick or jump around chronologically. Start at 1 and work your way up.

If after watching those videos, if you don't like long range shooting or find it interesting, just give up and sell your RPR.
>>
>>30759623
Nah, not with modern bullets. Stability while going transonic just isn't an issue anymore. There are all kinds of vids of people shooting .308 out to like 1500 yards and the bullets are not keyholing through the target, meaning they are still stable and spiraling tightly.

Now does it start dropping like a son of a bitch past 800 yards or so? Yes. But drop is easy to calculate.
>>
>>30765361
>Scopes are for faggots and casuals.
Better go tell all those spec ops guys and war heroes that they are faggots for using man-made technology that enables them to shoot more accurately at longer distances and kill their enemy better. Hurry along now.
>>
>>30774967
this is true for most current bullets except the 168 smk since the boat tail has like a 13* taper which makes it get fucked when going transonic.

"More recently, Bryan Litz's book, Ballistics for Long Range Shooting, includes mention of the issue with the 168 gr. bullet design. He says it has a dynamic instability in the transonic range. Below about 1400 fps, the bullet just can't be counted on not to tumble. The 13° boattail may be part of the problem, as the 175 grain SMK uses the 9° boattail originally developed for M1 ball bullets, and it doesn't exhibit this problem. If you look at drag plots in McCoy's, Modern Exterior Ballistics, 8°-9° is where boattail drag is lowest."
