if your mos is not 03xx or 11xx you are not a grunt

You would fall under the category of Personnel other than grunts.

Behold the combat engineer
He neither combats nor engineers

>>
>>30750589
I'm not military but I never understood the POG/not POG thing especially since it includes any MOS that isn't 03xx or 11xx as >>30750592 said.

What's so special about infantry? I don't get it. They're just the most basic thing, they have no significant battlefield responsibilities besides existing. Meanwhile special units like engineers, armored units, and cavalry units actually have a specific function that seems to be treated more like a guideline than a set rule so POGs are functionally not-POGs when they're available but have no job to do.

Plus it makes no sense that the stigma toward "being a POG" exists when the 18xx range of MOS exist.

I just don't get it.

USArmy - POG is Person Other than Grunt.

Every other english speaking Army and Navy in the world the word is 'Pogue'.
A word whose history is lost in time.
Some believe it to be from the same origin as the Gaelic "Pog mo thoin" or Pogue Mahone = "kiss my arse" and meaning a fag or ass-seller.
Others use Pogo = Posted on Garrison Only, meaning never deployed in action.

So, CombatEngineers are POGs, probably Pogues, and occasionally even Pogos.
>>
>>30750592
But 12Bs and 1371s usually spearheaded convoys in Afghanistan with all the IED-detecting shit.
>>
>>30750634
grunts train for combat and typically see combat

POGs generally dont train as much and dont typically see combat

Of course there are exceptions to both of these.
POGs with a lot of combat experience under their belt or grunts that dont see shit in their whole enlistment.

I was a POG myself. I spent my deployment in Afghan doing semi grunt shit and never saw combat.

>>
>>30750634
Role of the infantry is to seek out and close with the enemy, to kill or capture him, to seize and hold ground and repel attack, by day or by night, regardless of season, weather or terrain.

The training is the physically hardest to reflect this.
Grunts seek out combat, not just end up in it.
The role is to be the tip of the spear so to speak. Simply, the riflemans role is to kill the enemy. The snipers role is to kill the enemy. The mortarmans role is to kill the enemy. The recon infantrymans role is to find the enemy so the riflemen can kill him.
The engineers role is to build shit, to clear the way and support the grunts.
The artillerys role is to provide indirect fire to support the grunts.
Armour provide support to the grunts.
Sigs exist so the grunts can talk to each other and everyone else.

Grunts arent the role with the least responsibility
Theyre the lifeblood of any army

But that was simply a school they picked to send him to based on his background that played in well with his skill set. Much like how some of the grunts that (probably) went through at the same time as him had skills in their sets that helped them out. direct support MOSs do offer grunt type skills but at the same time its real 1000 level tasks. Nothing complicated or on the stage of supported company attacks.

>artillery kills more people than infantry ever does. At best infantry pins them in place for the artillery to kill people. FOs even accompany infantry and do infantry shit while still doing their job.
>armor spear heads any large attack. Look at desert storm for a perfect example
>signals accompanies infantry and does infantry shit while carrying a radio and doing infantry shit. Or they get out in top of a hill in the middle of nowhere with a repeater.

Infantry are bodies to occupy space after big guns and other, more specialized, units have done their job.

Are POGs ever called POSs as wordplay?
>>
>>30750589
OK, here's the skinny on Grunts vs POGs

POG (as Personnel Other than Grunt) is a backronym. It used to be (and still is, in some places) 'pogue', which basically translates to a man who is receptive to anal sex.

In the Vietnam era, that term was used to describe personnel who did not actively fight. It was not MOS dependent and was used primarily by Marines, though the usage spread to the Army in time. An engineer disarming booby traps was not a pogue, a tank driver was not a pogue. A cook, though, or a mechanic, was a pogue because they never left base.

At the time, being infantry was not considered something to be proud of, since it meant you were literally too silly or ignorant to be worth anything more than a bullet sponge wielding a poorly-aimed rifle.

After Vietnam, there was a long period where the US military did not get into any wars and, consequently, morale and discipline began to waver, particularly among the infantry who didn't have interesting jobs, nor were they actually training for any looming conflict. To improve their morale and discipline, the brass encouraged infantry units to think of themselves and carry themselves in a manner befitting a proud, fighting, front-line unit.

From this point, Marine infantrymen re-defined the term and turned into the term 'POG' that we know today, albeit now excluding every non infantry MOS. As always, the Army adopted the term shortly after the Marines.

Nowadays, among the currently serving and among veterans, the term is met with mixed feelings. On one hand, it's a fun term to use to rip on your friends, but on the other hand, it demeans the brave experiences of thousands of combat veterans, many of whom saw more combat as truck drivers than most infantrymen fortunate enough to be stationed in quiet parts of Iraq.

Personally, I stopped using the term after my first deployment. (I was a Mortarman from 2003-2011.)

I'm an art major so I'm not exactly bright, but I want to things besides sculpting ugly girls.
I started running and eating better a few months ago so I'm not a complete fatass anymore, and I've gained a little muscle too (hoping for a non-combat role because I fear death but I'm not picky)

However it will be argued against due to the vast amounts of people that never knew what pog meant in the first place. It's a specific term often misinterpreted as an insult.

Field engineers are a combat trade. So are tankies. But neither are grunts. It's entirely a different role. So they are indeed pogs of a far lesser degree than the blanket folding variety

I don't mean this is all so bad, being a grunt sucks sometimes. People like engineers are in a strange place. They'll assault some buildings and talk shit to the infantry about how they probably do more grunt shit than them. I don't know if this is better or worse than someone like an aircraft technician who tries to tell you he was a "sharpshooter". Ok it's worse. Every airborne soldier is worthless without the folks packing their parachutes. Every pilot worthless without the ground crew. Every grunt worthless without the supply and logistics folks procuring hardware and getting it moved to the front.

The whole thing worthless without cooks to keep people fed, engineers to build bases and intelligence folks to direct it all.
