I understand the few practical benefits of doing this, and that one can't even tell once it's inside a handguard. It just triggers my autism like nothing else during this build process.

Depending on usage Bench, Field, CQB you might want to rethink your autism spasm.
Most rifle users want the weapon to be balanced slightly forward.
If you don't care get a Bull Barrel.

this is called goverment profile and it sucks. its also the default.
if you dont want pencil you have to go thick

Anybody know where I can order a front sight base that includes the pins and sight post. I took off a railed gas block and I'm not having any luck finding one

I like "pencil" profile (.625 inch) for "tactical" carbines, and medium contour (also called recon contour, .750 inch) for precision rifles.

My only regret on my first AR was going Heavy contour (.825).
