I could be wrong but at least in the USA an AR 15 is probably the best SHTF rifle. Not a huge difference, though.

Zombies are the uptimate power fantasy. Especially the slow dumb ones. They are easy targets and are relatively easy enough to escape or barricade against. But they still represent a bit of danger so that the fantasy doesn't turn totally pathetic.

Funny thing is I started writing this before reading the rest of the thread. Just wanted to see if we kept going numerically for the guide.

Anyway, crossbow is dog shit. It's like chainsaw because, "it looks like it'd be cool but it's actually a really fucking bad choice for a multitude of reasons"
1. Not silent, makes the sound of a .22
2. Reload is like a musket, have to stand in place, takes a minimum of 8 seconds
3. Too powerful, bolts go right through the skull
4. Big and wide, cannot use in doors, pain to carry outdoors
5. If you don't use a cocking rope your hands will be cut to shit, thus grappling with a zambie would cause infection. If you do use a cocking rope then you have to lug around a cocking rope and pull it out and put it away every time you reload.

There was a chapter of the Franken Fran manga where a zombie virus infected nearly everyone on an island. The main characters were barricaded in a safe spot and the protagonist tried to research the plague. After a while some survivors formed squads to hunt the zombies down. Fran eventually finds out the virus is not only curable, but the victims just lose control of their bodies and their minds are just trapped. 1. They do NOT "make the sound of a .22" - they are pretty near silent, even more so with a couple of pretty standard string silencers. Sound is less than your average teenager's BB gun.
2) You say "reload is like a musket, minimum 8 seconds." Yeah, reload is about that. But you've apparently never shot a fucking musket. Good luck with 8 seconds.
3) "Bolts go right through the skull" - um, no. They're powerful, yes, and that could happen in a perfect storm of close range, field tip bolt, and temple shot. Even with a very powerful model, overpenetration isn't going to be a huge problem. We're not talking about ballistic gelatin here, it's a fucking skull.
4) Can't use indoors? Why the fuck not? Pain to carry outdoors? They're like 6-8 pounds and have a carry handle. What kind of pussy are you?
5) Hands cut to shit without cocking rope? Again, you're a pussy. My 15-year old daughter can pull back the 175lb. without a cocking rope. I guess if she did it repeatedly she'd get a blister. For an adult man, I wouldn't expect it to present a survival problem, more of an inconvenience.
Advantages, on the other hand - it IS quiet. Bolts are reusable if you don't lose them. Accuracy is great, power is great. If you need sustained high rate of fire, it's not the right choice. If you're wandering quietly through the woods with an occasional problem arising and don't want to alert everyone within a mile, it's perfect.

1. Crossbows are pretty loud. No, they're not as loud as a .22, but they're a lot louder than a BB gun. A suppressed .22 with subsonic ammo is much quieter.
2.Yes, it is faster to reload than a musket, but it still takes a fucking long time to reload, and you have to stop moving to cock the mechanism.
3. Human skulls are pretty weak in comparison to many animals. It would really depend on the range and bolt velocity/weight. Also on this note, the bolts are heavy and large. You could carry like 1000 .22 cartridges for the same weight as 50 bolts.
4. You can use them indoors, but they're awkward and large. 6-8 pounds is twice what a semi-auto .22 weighs. When you're carrying all your shit, cutting off pounds here and there is very useful.
5. Yes, you can cock them without a rope. Now do it 50 times and see how your hands feel.

Power is poor, range is half that of a .22, it is slow as shit to fire, and you'll run out of bolts quickly if you don't recover the ones you shoot, and even if you do, you'll loose them slowly as you miss and damage bolts. Additionally, the strings on crossbows are fragile as shit, service life is about 500 shots before serving starts fraying and the string/cables need to be replaced. To do this on a 175lb crossbow, you need a press. There are portable presses you can carry with you, but this is another piece of equipment you have to carry/take care of.

In conclusion, a suppressed .22lr semi is far superior to a crossbow.
