This is now a world war 1 thread.

Germany, as a whole, couldn't have made much better on the military front.
Much like in world war 2, it had an initial advantage : better organization, better equipment, better industry...
What it didn't have was manpower.

Germany could have won a quick, intensive war and, by the standards of those days, the initial advance on the western front was VERY fast.
Yet, it wasn't fast enough... because nobody had a clear idea of how effective the recent changes in firepower, railroad and communication made static defenses.
In a war of attrition, it came down to manpower.

UK and France alone exceeded Germany on that aspect, which meant they could cancel the whole offensive just by making it a meatgrinder... and they would still have acceptable odds of winning if numbers alone were to be factored.
A lot more mattered, of course... but then Russia had nearly thrice the population of Germany.
And, while its army was of dubious quality at first (bad moral, bad command structure, bad logistics, bad equipment...), it improved some aspects as the war went on.

By the time Russia dropped out, it had crushed the Austrian army and costed Germany more than half a million men, deepening the manpower gap with UK+France.

Then the USA arrived at the party and added about 2 millions men.

The central powers, with barely 25 millions men, were outnumbered by 18 millions soldiers or so.
In an age where movement warfare had been temporary killed by technology, making large encirclements and mass surrender like in World War 2 very hard to achieve.
Noway they could have beaten those odds. Best they could have done once the initial offensive against France failed was to hold and hope to break the spirit of the entente. It failed.

Most WWI casualties (as high as 95% in some records) came from low/mid velocity fragments from artillery and mortars. That's why the push for helmets was so great and why most nations developed various types of body armor, and why postwar historians believe thousands would have been saved had more/better armor and helmets been adopted.

The sad fact for American servicemen is that they had much better helmets developed but because they didn't want to look like Germans they stuck with the British brodie.

The German offensive was very fast. It was so fast that it would have rolled up France completely if successful. The reason it failed was because the French relied on their defenses on the French-German border so Germany went through Belgium to flank them. Unfortunately Belgium refused to surrender its borders and let Germany March through into France uncontested. By the time Germany beat Belgium, the element of surprise was gone. France would have fallen, uk-German relations would have stayed positive, and the bumbling Russians would have had to face the full might and attention of Germany instead of 30-40% who were fighting a defensive battle until France was defeated.

None of the generals were interested in "meat grinder" defensives until the end of the war. Most generals were actually removed because they refused to stop trying to break through lines and amassing casualties. You could even argue that without the politicians intervening the wars would have ended sooner from the armies losing more people than they could replace and a line break happening.

The Austrian army was so bad they had help from Germany sending troops to stiffen the armies and STILL lost to ww1 Russia. One of the worst major power land armies of all time. Austria and the Ottoman empire were nothing but dead weight for the Germans, they won nothing alone.

That all being said, once the fronts were entrenched there was no way Germany could win. They just didn't have the agriculture to feed the armies and the population with so many men dying.

Also the official British policy from the start was to starve out the entire German people into submission. It just so happened that Germans were the once advancing so they got to rape and pillage fist but the French raped as well, after the WW1 during their occupation of Rhineland.

The Ottomans held their own, considering they were expected to be a pushover. Overall they certainly outperformed the Austrians.

The german army could have easily been more powerful at the start of the war. I'm not even talking about tactics and such things (that people didn't and really couldn't know at the time). They had spent massive funds on a useless navy that could have been spent on land artillery, ammunition stocks, transportation etc. They actually had rather low mobilization compared to the french. The fact that they drew out the war four more years and even knocked out the russians in the process shows how close it was.

Of course, the same kind of political-strategical arrogance and incompetence that made them enter the war also caused these inefficiencies.
