Why was it so famous?
>>
>>30742034
It's just a very solid and well-engineered action. This lead to very widespread adoption (basically the AK-47 of it's time) and today almost all modern production bolt-action rifles are in some way derived from it.

Hardly. It's a solid action, no question. But it didn't change the way we built or used bolt action rifles. Many of the military bolt guns that came after the 98 was designed didn't use it (though several features were borrowed depending on the rifle in question).

Sweet, another anon with an SA marked Swedish M96.

>>30743095
Laminate stock K98s were mostly made with cupped butt plates as it was though to be more sturdy that way.
I used to have a laminate stock DOU 42 with a simple flat butt plate though. It was on an RC K98 so who knows how late war the stock really was, it couldn't be too late as it still had the channel cut for a cleaning rod.
>>
>>30743221
I just don't get why everyone loves a sleek, strong action that saw proliferation only marched by the ak47 and akm. I've never handled a mas 36 but I imagine it was good enough for the French.
>>
>>30743235
>I came to a Mauser thread to tell people I don't care about mausers
>>
>>30743247
Cupped buttplate was introduced in 1940, one year after the laminated stocks. Your stock was made in 1939. RC Kar.98ks are almost always total mixmasters, just like their refurb M91/30s.
>>
>>30743266
He's like the Enfield fanboys kek.
>>
>>30743253
Strong yes, sleek....eh. Maybe I've just gotten lemons, but the only Mauser action that doesn't feel clunky and gritty is my P14.
>>
>>30743299
You just haven't handled the best. Try getting your hands on pre ww1 contract 98 Mausers. They're god tier smooth.
>>
>>30743299
Gritty? You must've got a poopy Mauser then. Chunky? Yes, but in a good way. I've noticed mosins have a hollow sound when cycling the bolt.
>>
>>30743247
Are the SA ones terribly rare? As in, how many are still in circulation?
>>
>>30742034

Thanks!

>>30742952

Lol, technically. I bought it off of a Russian friend of mine who bought it in New York when he first moved over here. You can guess how long ago that was.

He's a Mauser connoisseur and said it wasn't an RC. It has the very rare plum finish on the bolt and none of the waffenamts were ground off. He believes it was captured by someone else but definitely not Russia.

I think it was. It's missing the common RC two locking screws, which were often melted down for steel.

The stock was painted with shellac which I dislike before being put into storage. I so badly wish to remove it but it would bother me more to destroy an old relic.

And finally, one part is mismatched -- the barrel band. It is a 1945 welded barrel band and not one of the spring switch ones found on the early models. All early models until '42 are impeccable. Extremely fine care was taken in their crafting.

And finally, it does have an electro-pencil marking along the bolt, designating the same manufacturing code found all along the rifle's parts. Something many countries did to their captures.

Anyways, it was definitely a capture. Signs point to Russia but it very well could have been a different Soviet satellite as things aren't very consistent with typical Russian Capture.

One thing is certain, it fires like a charm. I've taken game at extremely long ranges with absolute accuracy. It's truly my favorite rifle of my collection.
>>
>>30743585

I said "And finally" twice. Whoops. Shouldn't post after taking a nap.
>>
>>30742034
It's kind of interesting how three of the most famous bolt-action rifles ever made continue on

>Mauser lives on through its great action, which is endless copied
>Enfield and Mosin just live on because people won't stop using them in conflicts
>>
>>30743394
From what I've found 77,000 were sold to Finland, then 8,000 Swedish volunteers armed with Swedish rifles were sent over and after the hostilities, 7,000 of the rifles were left behind. So about 84,000 potentially SA marked Swede Mausers exist.
Who knows how many actually survived.

>the mauser bolt is basically the same bolt in all modern bolt action rifles. mauser perfected it.
The Mauser action isn't the best designed bolt action rifle, by a long shot. The reason why the Mauser action was so prolific was because of DWM's marketing. Same goes for why almost every bolt action on the market copies it.

>>
>>30746783
Pretty much any year. I'm not a mauser guy at all but iirc they were cranking them out so fast each one definitely saw action somewhere

anywhere from $400 for a shitstick to $800+ for exceptionally well preserved.

Average is gonna be around $600 for your standard russian capture

I saw a ce marked Mauser made in '44 that was pretty neat.
Externally the machining was smooth, but inside you could see tons of tooling marks, you could tell they were getting desperate to field these rifles at the time.

I'd really like to snag a late war K98 that really shows the desperation.
