you can go cheaper without losing much quality but its your choice.
Pump shotguns tend to be reliable no matter the brand, only difference is fit finish and available aftermarket parts
>>
>>30729047
If you do get an 870, replace the extractor with one not made out of stamped steel, or else you'll start to get failures to eject after a few hundred rounds.
>>
Mossberg 590.

Remingtons are for old men who keep throwing logs on a dying fire.
>>
I've been looking at shotguns. Ithaca Model 37 Defense is worth a look.
>>
>>30729047
Remington's quality control has been shit for quite a long time now. Get a mossberg 500, 590, or 590a1 instead.
>>
>>30729047
If you're going to cheap out on the Express just get a Mossberg.

If you're willing to pay $600+, get a Wingmaster.

Remington's budget line of guns have all gone to shit.

The remington quality meme on this board seriously needs to die. It's funny, half of the people who spout the nonsense have never even owned a remington. Keep spewing everything you see the other newfags spewing.

When it comes to shotguns, I definitely prefer the 590, but not because of manufacturing quality.

>>
>>30729951
I'm sure there are good Remington being made. I actually want to buy one of the new V3s to duck hunt but I'm holding out till they get some field testing because of my experience with my 870 supermag (made in 2013). It had major issues with spent hulls sticking in the chamber because of how roughly machined the chambed walls were. You could run your finger through it and just feel the ridges. I ended up getting a new barrel from Remington.. except it had the same problem. 3rd time was the charm and it's been 100% ever since. Still left a bad taste in my mouth. Plus, there's the R51 fiasco. Also I used to lurk the Marlin forums and almost as soon as they got bought by Remington's parent company, they started having major issues too.

I've got the 870 express magnum with a tube extender, night sights and a 12.5'' barrel, it lives under my bed and I feed it military grade 00 buck.

>inb4 overpenetration
>mfw living in the boonies

I've never had a feeding issue with it, it strips easy, cleans easy, and I've probably put 500 target loads through it, has a surprisingly tight spread even with the shorter barrel. I've mag dumped with it several times

I'd definitely recommend it as a solid and adaptable shotgun. You can sometimes find police trade-ins for great prices, that's how I got mine.
>>
>>30730586
PG only shotguns are hard to shoot. But not impossible. In a proper stance and grip you can fire it effectively.

Honestly i find that pistol grips, even with stocks, miss a lot of the "point" of a traditional shotgun which is low profile. It's simple to handle and balance because there's no weirdly jutting out parts. Like as a thought experiment, imagine saran wrapping this vs an ar15

>PG + stock is so much better when it comes to ergonomics and control.
nah dude youve just got ill fitting one size fits most stock
if the choice is between a badly fit traditional and a badly fit pistol grip with sights the pistol grip with sights wins since youve got to contort your body to fit it and youve got references for the proper hold in the ghost rings
its way better than contorting yourself with only a bead
a properly fitted traditional stock is great

Except the original stock that my Remington came with was perfect. It fit snug, and it was overall perfect fit. I was really reluctant and switching to pistol grip + stock because my bro has PG only mossberg and i hated it. So i pulled the trigger and got a speedfeed IV-S (it has identical length of pull to the original stock) and i noticed an improvement in speed and ergonomics. With the pistol grip i had more options of holding the gun
>>
OP, I've had an 870 for months and put hundreds of shells trough it and the only issue i've had with it were friends baby handling it. I got an H&R defender 12 for around 150. Never had an issue with anything and doesn't feel cheap. Probably not the best for aftermarket parts, but I think you could use 870 parts on it. Dicks and academy keep them in stock but they always sell quick.
>>
>>30731975

OP here, ended up going to my LGS and picking up an 870 tactical express for ~330 out the door after a special they had going on. I know they may or may not be the same quality as the olden days, but my father has one from the 70's that's still running fine, having exchanged hands among our family member a number of times. I liked how it felt and have always wanted to get myself one.

FWIW they didn't have a 500 or 590 in stock, and said that they have had a number sent back to the manufacturer for defects and warranty work?

Bud's Fun Shop has pre-Freedom Group 870s listed as "Remington 870 Police 12 Gauge." They come with wood furniture and 18.5" barrels, but they're marked up at bit over $500.

I fired a friends 870 before I bought my moss 500, pic related, and something about it got uncomfortable to shoot after several rounds, I think the recoil kept shoving the trigger guard into my middle finger. Not severe, but noticeable after a while and I haven't had the same problem with the 500

fire both the 870 and 500 before making your choice if you get the chance

>AOW
Call it what you want, if it's not a shotgun, and has a bore over half an inch, it's a DD.

So it's either a SBS or a DD.

Actually neither. ATF has ruled that smoothbore firearms that leave the factory with a barrel length under 18" but never had a shoulder stock (pistol grip only), are legally AOWs, not SBSes. Still NFA Title 2 firearms, but they transfer for $5 instead of $200. State laws may also otherwise restrict them, but at a federal level, they fall under AOW classification.

'cept they've regularly defined shotguns with a 14" barrel and 26"OAL without a stock as "Firearms", not NFA items.

I'd like to find an old Wingmaster to swap my oldschool riot furniture onto, but I'm okay with my Express Magnum

>none of the examples given are 12 gauge
Because then it would be a DD.

Just because a rifle is an SBR doesn't mean it isn't also a DD if the caliber is >.50.

Life isn't vidya, you can easily use a shotgun at double that distance, four times the distance if it's got a fitting choke and load.
