Also, the Cold War really showed the usefulness and capability of Special Operations. They got a lot of shit done quietly that would have caused major issues if done otherwise. It saw the creation of the Green Berets, MAC-V SOG, Delta, SEAL teams, SAS (may be incorrect, but they did become some of the worlds' foremost operators during the Cold War), Mossad, etc., etc. Lots of badass dudes doing badass things for God and Country.

The Pakistanis were already heavily backing Islamist groups, which were taking over and subjugating smaller, more secular groups in the country. It was either back the Islamists, or let the Soviets reinstate the power of the DRA. We won, the Soviets got kicked out of Afghanistan, which helped lead to the collapse of the Soviet Union, which was good for us.

We just also happened to run into the issue of having them also fight us, which sucks.

No Soviets is better than a secular Afghanistan, as the Soviets are a legitimate threat to the global influence of the United States, whereas the Taliban are a regional pain in the ass.
