My favorite song is Red Door by the Tumbling Boulders.
Total blowout for vietnam communist. Only reason anything is said other wise are doves getting attention and counter culture
>>30667857
It was containment politics to prevent the spread of communism, as simple as that. One cannot oversee the outcome of a war at the beginning nor the casualty rate. If the 'nams were smart at the beginning they've would've welcomed the 'Freedom with open arms and leave the slavery-ideology behind.

Would of ended as another North and South Korea had we not pulled out and stayed on the defensive. You can thank the hippies and Weatherman Underground for popularizing the anti war movement as well as the army's idiot decision to playing active war film on television for the population to see.
The war in Vietnam? Well, there's only one thing i can say about the war in Vietnam. HejdpfbwospdvjdebjdjficjsbskddodcxosoaapapherndoxjsnnejdkxjbedodjedkxiwhgakdicywbeoxucjsbwdoicspwlsbddnoxixnsbediduwhwkwowshshbddkdjenwkwjssnsnsItAintMejeodpdjwbslxohebedodhwbdb.

>>30667885
Anon if the Chinese invaded America, occupied it for 100 years, then eventually left and set up a government in their place, would you be so keen to support it and its ideology?
They were fighting for communism sure, but mostly they were fighting for Vietnam. For them it was a war of national liberation.
Ho Chi Minh literally asked the Americans for help against the French because he thought they would support a people struggling for their independence for obvious reasons.

>>30668023
Than why adhere to the ideology that is strictly un-American? If they weren't commies then the Americans would've helped them, because the US was strictly anti-colonial back then
>>30667989
Came here to say this
>>30668089
You failed history, didn't you?
>>30668089
The US didn't give a fuck about colonialism, they were anti USSR. The North asked the US for help and based their constitution off the US one. The US said fuck off and ho chi mien went to the ruskies for help. And he got it.
He didn't give a fuck about communism. Just wanted independence.
Beta Americans got BTFO by dudes in pajamas.
>>30668089
Because colonialism is vehemently anti-colonialist, and capitalism had been used by colonial powers to exploit and oppress people for decades, so it's no wonder why anti-colonialists didn't like it and drifted towards communism instead.
Also the U.S. wasn't anti-colonialist at all, in fact they engaged in 19th century-style imperialism right up until WW2, they had their own colonies, they just called them "overseas territories".

This is the most puzzlingly retarded thing I've seen in weeks. It's like I stumbled onto an abandoned AM radio-station stuck on playing Tokyo Rose recordings 70 years after the fact. The USSR was all about propping up puppet regimes, it was literally surrounded by them.
>>30668571
Did you miss the part in history class about the Cold War? Where it was the US vs USSR?
>>30668571
>The USSR was all about propping up puppet regimes, it was literally surrounded by them.
Sure they were, but communism isn't about that. Capitalism stipulates that the government isn't allowed to intervene in support of corporations, but the U.S. does it all the time. Christians are supposed to be pacifists, but they kill people all the time in the name of their religion.
Here's a shocker Anon: sometimes people use ideologies and then do the opposite of what those ideologies say.

Right Anon, the Saigon government collapsed instantly because it had a rock solid base of support among the people. There was a communist insurgency in the south, but not anti-communist insurgency in the north because people loved the Saigon government that had been put in power by the same people that brutally conquered and subjugated the country for hundreds of years.
The U.S. refused to allow elections after the First Indochina War because everybody wanted an anti-communist regime right?

It was a silly and pointless war against the "evil Communists"
We thought we would waltz in and with superior special forces and control of the air we would stomp all over the NVA and Vietcong.
We VASTLY overestimated the will of the local population to rise up and fight the Communists (hey guys, how about we just give you some training and then you sacrifice all the lives to win your "freedom" to be imperial subjects again?). We vastly overestimated the actual impact of air superiority in the region.
We vastly underestimated the fighting capabilities of the North, and we vastly underestimated how GODDAMN ANNOYING it was going to be politically and militarily to chase the fuckers throughout the entirety of Southeast Asia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Tonkin_incident
Daily reminder that the incident which lead to our serious involvment in the region, the Golf Of Tonkin incident, NEVER FUCKING HAPPENED. Our government intentionally and knowingly fabricated and exaggerated everything about it for the sole purpose of drawing us into a pointless war.

Here we see the gunner in his natural habitat. See how he sulks from the sun and observers. Look at his overall demeanour. A fine specimen he is. I know these threads are jokes usually but Vietnam always reminds me of a family friend growing up.
His name was Larry Stick and he was an absolute madman. He was a door gunner on a huey. He looked like Rod Stewart and had the dirtiest sense of humor. He was a hard working son of a bitch and did mason work for almost 30 years. He loved Hockey and the Hershey Bears and hed take me and my dad to go see em. I used to go to his house and just sit and bullshit with him for hours about music, pussy, and just about anything. He taught me dirty Limericks and always had a smile on his face. He started having a lot of trouble with nightmares and guilty feelings from Nam, and He opened up to me about them. The past few years as I traveled around I saw him less and less, because work and just life in general got in the way. I did 6 months working in Montana and came home. For two months after I never saw him even though he lived a mile from me. Then one night I got a call from my dad saying Larry died. He fell in the shower and cut his femoral.
I miss the motherfucker so much.

Chuck Mawhinney is one such warrior. Chuck Mawhinney joined the USMC in Oct. 1967 Chuck in VNright out of high school. He attended Scout Sniper School at Camp Pendleton and graduated in April 1968. From there he received orders to Vietnam where upon arrival he was assigned as a rifleman to 1st Marine Division, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Battalion Lima Company. He remained in this unit for 3 months until he was re-assigned to 5th Marine Regiment HQ Scout Sniper Platoon. There he worked as a scout sniper for different companies with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions. He also worked with the South Koreans (Rock Marines), Force Recon, Army CAG Unit, but the majority of his time was with Delta Company. He served a 13 month tour with two back to back extensions. During this tour he is credited with 103 confirmed NVA-VC kills and 216 probables. Like many fellow service members, following his service in Vietnam, Chuck returned home (Oregon) to resume his life and he resides there today.

You have some flaws in your observations my friend.
#1) There was no country called Vietnam when the French arrived. Vietnam didn't exist until the late part of WW2 when the Japanese united the countries together an 'Empire' to help control uprisings.
#2) Ho Chi Minh was pro-western, until he found a better deal with the communists. Ho was in it for himself. Just like almost every 'revolutionary'.
>>30668983
Don't want to screw over your colonialist friend? That's understandable. But sending in large amounts of equipment to aid this friend in their colonialism does not speak highly of the land of the free. Poorly taking over this friend's subjugation of a foreign land when friend declares it pointless and retreats, does not speak highly of the home of the brave.

France left Vietnam under a UN brokered deal in 1954. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva_Conference_(1954)
This left two 'temporary' countries. North Vietnam and South Vietnam.
These countries were to elect a common leader who would unite the country under one government. -- Everyone knew this was a joke BTW --
during a brief period of time, people in both countries were free to migrate to the country they wanted. The North being pro communist, and the South being Capitalist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Passage_to_Freedom
Many communists remained in the South as sleeper agents -- The Viet Cong. These people began an insurrection against the South Vietnamese government.
not long after, the North began its eventual assault into the South on the pre-text of assisting the Viet Cong.. The UN supplied ammo/guns/aircraft/tanks/aid to assist the South in defending its territory. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Vietnam_(1959%E2%80%9363)
>>30673504
Except the Communists had massive popular support across the country, and the Americans refused to allow elections in the south because they knew the commies would win. On top of it all the entire legitimacy of the Southern government was in question since it was basically a colonial proxy left behind by the French.

I was your average hippie dippie high school kid. The 60s-70s rock, etc. was all I listened to. Most of my reports in school were about Vietnam and/or the current conflict in Iraq/Afghanistan using comparing and contrasting them. Spending most of my time bitching about the "imperialist war mongering USA"
The more I studied in college to get my degree (History) the more I decided that a war was inevitable and it just happened to take place in Vietnam. Even my more liberal professors stood on the side of the US for most of it. We needed to show everyone our big swinging dick and keep everyone in check.
Apologies for the blog.

Issued, M16 stripper clips are packaged inside of them and those are in turn packaged inside of standard ammo boxes. So you open up a crate of ammo, and it's full of those bandoliers full of stripper clips (each one comes with a magazine charger and a bobby pin to pin the bandolier tight against your body if you decide to wear it). They have a removable silver thread that runs the length of the bandolier, if you remove it you can slip full 30 round STANAGs in them.

Not that I really give a shit about vietnam, it was basically an excuse to drum up degenerate "counter-culture" stateside and "desegregate" the military, which is always a nation-destroying mistake. A few steps above destabilizing healthy nationalistic countries in the middle east just to make our greatest allies feel a bit more comfortable though, at least we were killing communists. I guarantee your perceptions of war are shaped entirely by nonsensical fantasy movies out of Hollywood, the ones that make Vietnam out to be some 20 year long classic rock concert where everyone is a dabbling poet and rampant drug user with a GI Joe codename like fucking animal mother, destined to either die at the hands of some righteous freedom fighter or return to the US as a mental disaster zone who kills a dozen cops before being gunned down in a gutter.
People went to war. They enjoyed it. They enjoyed killing the enemy, they enjoyed seeing things never to be seen again by human eyes, they enjoyed the experience. At the very least they learned to live with it, it was just routine. A job. The things that irked them the most were mosquitoes and humidity, not some melodramatic dwelling on the inhumanity of mechanized slaughter set to the background music of a deranged negro strumming an electric guitar like a mad ape while on PCP. The vast majority survived unscathed. Then they packed up, went home, got jobs and remained normal functioning human beings. Not ticking time bombs, not walking nutcases.

I remember laying in bed every night, praying that my dad and uncle would be ok until I fell asleep.
My uncle eventually went MIA in 67'.
He was presumed dead after him and a few other got separated from their unit near Cambodia. His disappearence really fucked me up, I use to wonder exactly what happened to him, I harbored a lot of hate towards the Vietnamese after that, eapically when Platoon came to theaters. Specifically the scene where Manny gets abducted and killed. Just thinking that some little sland eyes shit probably tortured my uncle to death drove me insane.
My dad came home in 70', He had some type of stroke and was deemed unfit for combat afterwards.
He later explained to me that my Uncle was more than likely killed by friendly fire. Supposedly an artillery barrage had landed on his position and they were never able to locate the body.
It was weird. I seemed to get closure and be content with my uncle being blown to pieces by his own people.
But anyways, once I had retired out of the Marine Corps, my father really began to open up to me about Vietnam.
It was horrible.
Something that can't be explained, only experienced.
He told me stories of the Viet Cont strapping bombs to children, then telling them the Americans had candy for them, only to blow the child up when they approached Marines. He told me about watching two Marines in a foxhole, taking a direct hit from a rocket and having to scoop their remains up with his helmet so they could be dumped into a bag.
The absoulute worst thing about the place according to my dad? Patrolling at night.
He explained that if You stopped paying attention to the man in front of you for even a few seconds, you could get separated and lost, then you're fucked. You just have to plop your ass on the ground and hope a friendly force finds you first (which wasn't very likely).
>>30676231
No, most veterans don't write literature. They're not authors, they're either professional soldiers or dock workers, factory workers, etc who become soldiers.
A lot of the most prominent anti-war literature of the first world war or associated with the first world war for example was written by cowards, civilians (Dalton Trumbo), deserters (Robert Graves), people barely at the front (Remarque, All Quiet is fiction I might add), or even fucking women (Joan Littlewood).
Honestly if you read most of the period non-fiction literature that has since been memory holed, the kind of shit that's now public domain, it's overwhelmingly patriotic and just describes the events of some action followed by a little word of how we'll get the hun soon or whatever. The same is true of what's typically put out by military non-fiction publishers for any war.

Our God elected Pope's decrees can overturn anything written in the book. As it is on Earth, so it is in Heaven.
If he demands we kill Muslims during the Crusades, we are bound by faith to kill Muslims.
If he demands we kill men, women, and children subscribing to Anabaptism all throughout German, we are bound by faith to purge the Earth of heretics that falsely believe God forgives.
If he demands we bomb the living shit out of England, so help those fucked up teeth, by Faith they will die.

>My dad came home in 70', He had some type of stroke and was deemed unfit for combat afterwards.
This reminds me of a Korean War story from one of my former co-workers.
>Grandpa was inna Marine Corps back in the day
>One day on patrol, end up in a firefight with gooks in a small valley
>Firefight turns into a lengthy affair, drawing in all available motherfuckers nearby for one big party with the Marines
>Platoon leader calls for artillery support because 'fuck this'
>Artillery being what it is, raises all kinds of hell for everyone
>Grandpa is lost
>No one can find him, despite searching
>Spend several hours looking
>Have to call it off and list him as MIA after three days
>Two weeks later, another patrol finds Grandpa to the northwest.
>Says an artillery blast was close enough to knock him cold
>Woke up among a bunch of dead gooks in the middle of the night, unable to find anyone.
>Lived in the bush with his Ka-bar and a scavenged SKS for all that time
>Killed three Gooks who were snooping around
>When he's returned to his unit, they figure out he had actually stealthed his way around their search parties cuz he thought they were enemies.
Even better part is that co-worker and two of his Marine relatives were stationed in the same area many years later. He said Granpa's valley was in-between his Army base and his uncle's Marine Corps base.

I'd like to add to this, my father didn't despise the war, in fact he felt that we'd committed too much to it already and should have went the full nine yards on North Vietnam.
Before he passed away, he shared many of stories from Vietnam. Most of them as I recall were pretty positive. Things like running jokes amongst his unit, partying with his buddies while on R&R, getting drunk and being an ornery, smartass, shithead. (he said everyone called him Wild e because he wrote ACME on all his gear).
His words are "Vietnam had some of the best and worst times of my life, either way it was a hell of a time."
And I think what he said can pretty much can be applied to anyone who's time spent in the Millitary, in combat or not.
He was the major driving force behind me enlisting.
Miss you dad.

typical war lost by politicians. yeah we fucked up the VC but we could have totally decimated them. just like iraq, some politicians invented stupid "rules of engagement" which prevented a lot of tactical progress and victories.
our special forces guerilla warfare was extremely effective, and the vietnam war proved their value as force multipliers.
but you cant occupy territory and subjugate guerilla fighters, without 'going the distance'. and politicians made sure the military couldn't 'go the distance', if you know what i mean.
yes they were afraid of escalating to a larger war with russia head on. no, that would have never happened and we should have just blown the VC the fuck out of cambodia and laos early on in the war
