Far enough that I don't get gored by the 2 ton piece of meat running at 40mph. I wanted to chamber an AR in 308 originally, but it's my first AR-15 and my buddy who owns 4 suggested I stay milspec, and that 308 did not have proper milspec options.

I do own a 30-30 Winchester lever action rifle (idgaf about high ROF for shooting bison.) would that work ok? Im asking if it would be worth it to put a different barrel and upper on an AR for longer ranged shooting. Also lest anyone think I illegally hunt protected bison, I have to pass through an area largely populated by them in a SHTF scenario, I want to know in case I run into one.

You should only ever need to do that if it's charging you. Dem flankz is where the magic is.

That said, if it IS charging you and you need to convince it otherwise, try one of the large Belted Magnums; .300 WbyMag, .375 H&H, .416 Rigby (or .416 Rem Mag if you need a more common platform), .458 Win Mag, or the more-African stuff like .458 Lott, .500 Jeffery, .505 Gibbs.

If you considered buying a .50BMG to kill a buffalo, you shouldn't have a problem ponying up some money for a good Express Rifle, so all the Nitro Express rounds should be in your wheelhouse too.

The .45-70 damn near made them extinct, and its only more powerful today. If you don't want something that shoots like a rainbow get any safari caliber.

i use my grandpas 8mm mauser for bison to good effect. got a few lbs frozen now

Modern super ultra turbo hot hand loaded .45-70 out of a Marlin 1895 or a Ruger No.1 will leave exit wounds on literally any animal that walks the earth today. Rainbow trajectory isn't a problem when you can just walk up to them and one-shot them before they have a chance to trample you.

.270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .308 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, .45-70 Government.

Think full power rifle cartridges, .277" and greater. Belted magnums, even better. Realistically handle anything from coyotes up to moose.
