It's par for the course for Turkey. Military removes islamists every decade or so.

It's a coup attempt.
The turkish military are traditionally secularists, supporters of Ataturk's kemalist ideals. Erdogan is an autocratic islamic despot who has forced through unpopular constitutional changes.

As always it really depends on how the military splits in the next few hours/days. If it becomes swiftly apparent one side has a major advantage and the other decides to gtfo whilst they have a decent chance of doing so and surviving then it'll be nothing. If the military is fairly evenly split, or even just indecisive enough to give IS and/or the Kurds the chance to join the party then worst case scenario is the Syrian clusterfuck suddenly extends a whole lot further.
>>
>>30634187

No, there's no outside party to call NATO against. Internal problems are members things to deal with.
In theory sure he could ASK for help managing the situation, but that would be admitting to the entire world that he'd already lost. And who would he ask/expect help from anyway? Nobody would want to know because nobody likes him/Turkey under him, the only reason anyone puts up with Turkey's bullshit all the time and talks to them at all is that the location is simply far too strategically important to ignore.

The Turkish Army is sort of like the Army in every second world country, the only competent thing going. It's the same in Thailand, most of Asia, South Africa, Iran, Pakistan etc. If you want something you get the Army to do it.

It's also secular, to the point that they don't actually let their conscripts have any sort of Islamic material or writing on them.

>>30635742
it's not that he's willing to throw lives away. He and his loyalists know that in encouraging the populace to fight back, many of the rebels will hesitate to kill the folk they are trying to liberate, or they will kill.

Having rebels kill civvies (even just a small amount) that will work in the loyalists favor. And I am making an assumption in saying this but: Unarmed civvies are going to lose a lot of steam when they see a person or two next to them fall to the ground after being shot.

Either way Erdogan knows that the rebels won't massacre a rowdy populace, simply because they cannot.

Not the guy you replied to but another question about the nukes
Lets say shit really hits the fan, base is over run, all personnel are either dead, captured or on the run. Foreign group now controls the area and decides to try to "liberate" the weapons.
Would the US Military consider dropping a few bombs on the nukes to make sure that anything the foreigners recover is badly damaged and at most they could recover some chunks of weapons grade nuke material?

Personally if i was running the show and couldn't get the nukes out and it looked like they might fall into foreign hands i'd have B2s loaded and ready to drop some bombs on the site.

>>

You could but you would take months to years.

There is 0 chance that someone could seize those weapons and deploy them without the US allowing it.

>>30635843
Without an existing design, that could be years.

Doubtful that the junta will be able to take the capital for long enough. Even if they did, the propaganda victory has been for Erdogan's side; he's got enough civilians on the streets resisting that I've seen a lot of intellectuals commenting that the coup is against public interest and thus unjustified.

If Erdogan went full dictator, he'd just be putting off civil war for a few years anyway. If the junta actually took control, I wouldn't be surprised if the US has boots on the ground to oust them by the end of the month.

tbqh senpai, could the meaning of "take to the streets" have a connotation that was missed in translation? Is erdogan asking folks to use their voices or use force? I don't necessarily think "take to the streets" means to explicitly lay down your life. That's just an assumption though.

Can anyone attest to the firearm laws in Turkland? Do some have arms to bugger off the rebels?

Also, does anyone have any idea which areas would be prone to being pro or anti erdogan?

This is correct as of Saturday. The current story is that the leadership guiding the coup got busted and they enacted the coup before it was fully prepared. As a result the SF and Intel leadership were not involved (read; they were either regime loyal or ignorant of how to help, it's a thorough mix) and the coup was not fully united in how to execute the mission. Really, it's Turkey excelling at remaining a clusterfuck, by trying to fix their clusterfuck.

I think the gov version of Gulen involvement carries weight. Its know that Gulen had infiltrated the army at some level. Also its know that Erdogan has been clearing Gulen out from every aspect of Turksih state. If Gulen guys in the army knew they were next, maybe they chose to gamble and hope that if they start a coup others would join them, both civilians and other army commanders. It would explain why the coup was so small in size and so incompetently carried out. The coup side was rushed and they didn't have a lot of guys in high positions.

Individual platoons, company level officers acting in accordance with their own, vague, guidance would fuck up that hard. 18-19 year old kids following the orders of those coup officers would get fucked up that hard. This is what an ununified coup looks like in real time.

Sorta neat if it weren't pretty heartbreaking for the lowly conscripts getting their shit wrecked.

I'd buy that explaination for a dollar. Maybe even 2.

It's really important to understand that the military was specifically kept seperate of the government so that it could enforce secular values if the ruling powers ever got too fanatic one way or another. Erdogwan had been filtering out (lol, purge) any officers or politicians who favored the old ways, so there were probably very few officers ranked higher than colonel who were privy to/supported the coup. They will likely fight with extreme tenacity after seeing what happened to their brothers on the bridge.

I also suspect that Erdowgan knew of the coup 20+ hours before it happened and ensured his exact location was never known. As a result there are two smoldering buildings and Erdowan was in the air prior to those strikes.

The next 24 hours are going to be exciting as soldiers get tired from fighting all night.
>>
I feel really, really bad for those soldiers, though. They don't deserve brutality. The coup leaders will likey hang, though

Brittish Labour’s shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry shows support for the pro-coup side and urges the turkish government to "recognise the need to unify the country and show greater respect for human rights, free speech and justice. These events cannot be used as justification for yet further repression and division."

>Coup has basically failed
I am starting to suspect some really serious shilling because people have been saying this over and over for the last 12 hours while being proven wrong, and they never source their claim either.

Shit's still going down. Stop your disinformation.

I agree with this, but I suspect as this drags out more officers will fight to the death in their offices or trucks. I don't know of many pilots who would gladly land, surrender their aircraft and acknowledge they were traitors and submit to being hanged.

Senseless violence, as expected from islamic fundamentalists.

Gj Turkey, you're going to become Iran 2.0 after all this shit. Prepare yourself for decapitations and stoning.

When politics are involved, never attribute to ignorance what can be explained by greed.

People are greedier than they are stupid.

The military does not have unity of command. They do not have public support. They do not have international support. They do not have half the locations they had previously held 10 hours ago. They are being shot out of the sky. Coup leadership is fractured and some are escaping the country.

Google is your friend. The coup failed. This event could potentially be the Sparks of a civil war, but Turkey is too vital in the refuge crisis to be allowed to fail, international involvement would step in to bolster whatever strongman is currently in authority.

Face facts, Erdowgan is going to use this to justify more power grabs, further castrate his military, strengthen his gendarm, and suppress free speech/ secular values.

Don't hate the truth, learn it so you can fight it effectively.

All political parties came out condemning the coup. US, EU, Iran all have came out congratulating Erdogan on crushing the coup. Those that wanted to join the coup have done so and its clear that the coup side doesn't have the manpower to do anything but try and hold what they have probably hopping to get some mercy or exile.
>>
>>30641774
Actually I am wrong, the Communist party came out supporting the coup.
>>
>>30641724
by "secular values" you mean Sharia law right?
>>
>>30641831
No he means secular laws.

Erdogan wants to enforce Islamic values. The coup is fighting against that.

The modern Turkish state and military prided itself on being secular despite a muslim majority nation.

Erdogan wants to go back to the Ottoman Empire basically.

The military does not function on religion, so no. The military was part of the checks and balances so that shariah law could not be enacted by Islamists. Just as the military is designed to act as check/balance if ultra orthodoxed Christians started looking to burn folks at the stake for having a picture of Mickey Mouse (worshipping idols).

yeah because that happens allll the time

Check out ultra orthodoxed zealots in Russia, bro. I won't argue about the evils of one religion without acknowledging that all of them can be, have been, or always have the capability of being horrible.

So... should we spark a civil war in Turkey then?

Or should we wait to see what the head honcho's next move is.

If turkey disentigrates the refuge crisis would be back-breaking. Isis would spread some more. Iraq and Syria would further slide into chaos. Not sure what NATO would do in reaction.
>>
>>30642347
I think that -in the event of Turkey breaking apart- NATO will be finally be forced to take action.

And probably a chance that the US won't miss to send troops there.
