So I bought a FAL guys. Very early STG 58 kit Century R1A1 built on a Hesse receiver. I know it's not the best of the best, but it only cost me an even trade for a $600 gun that I was having problems getting rid of.

Anything I should know? Hesse receiver serial is four digit and STG kit is matching in the 40k range from what I can tell so far.

also, how to remove the muzzle device century installs? I want to have one of the factory STG muzzle devices installed, either by myself or my LGS.

Does anyone have the full dimensions of a No. 5 Mk 1? I have one with an aftermarket flash hider/front sight welded on and I've been trying to find out how high the front sight post should be above the bore to see if I need to replace the post (current one is 0.815") but I can't find the fucking dimensions anywhere.

I've actually been thinking of mailing the britbong ministry of defense to see if they have the dimensions somewhere, just for shits and giggles.

Type III direct from Coonan is $300, but be prepared to wait. I ordered mine beginning of March and word is that a landslide of 1911 orders has delayed FAL receiver orders getting filled within the 60-90 days their website lists. There are also some rumblings in the FAL community that Coonan quality may have taken a hit, but if this delay is due to fixing that, I'm very okay with the delay.

I'll probably post a build thread when my receiver finally comes, but I'm still undecided on what I want to do with the parts as far as finishing goes. I was thinking sandblast, park, then appliance epoxy (the same stuff I use for AKs), but I'm open to suggestions.

I had Christmas trees shoved in my ear canals, so it was all good.

Had a fun time with loose at the range, easily the best one I've ever been to in/near Bexar county. All steel targets, no rules about rapid fire, chill ROs, and the clientele was fantastic to boot.

On a tangentially related note, hitting the steel gong at 300yds on the second try with irons was incredibly satisfying.

Yeah I'd actually never heard of them before I got mine. The buddy who is a dealer is an FFL, has owned several safes full of guns his whole life and one of his sons was even a designer at Browning in Utah but works for another major firearms company up in Maine or Vermont. Anyhow he'd been using the same scope on his 20" AR for some time so when I built mine he kept suggesting that I use one. I've taken it in to several gun stores and they always look through it and compliment the clarity and sharpness of the glass.

I've heard bad things about the receivers and some of the build jobs they've done for people. Bad QC is what it boils down to, some people have Enterprise guns that they love to death that function flawlessly, and other people have ones with fucked headspacing, ejector block problems, and the inability to properly feed from certain magazines.

The GI version isn't the 'older version', the one in that listing is actually a newer one because it has the paddle mag release.

The only differences between the $1K and up PTRs and the GI are the finish (GI is parkerized while the nicer ones have that sleek black powder coat), barrel profile (GI has original HK profile whereas more costly PTRs usually have bull barrels) and, in some instances, a rail.

The GI model is actually one of the slightly more recent PTR offerings, because they realized that some people just wanted a really basic G3 copy. The GI is closer to the G3s that were produced in the Cold War, and their price reflects that. It'll still function just as well as the others, and it's still stamped out of the same goddamn sheet metal.

And yes, that's a good deal for a new one, but it's also sold out.

FAL rifles are a bit bulky and overweight, but all that steel makes them low maintenance and indestructible. I love mine and would never consider trading it for any other rifle. Also, im 6ft and 250lbs so rhe 12lb rifle aint shit to me.

However, considering how hard they are to find NOW, it's gonna be inflated.
