We can talk JNA if you want
Here is JNA Military Police with their easy to spot MP belt buckle which they based on the US Sheriff badge as the entire MP system was borrowed from the USA. JNA was the only Socialist/Communist nation which used the MP system instead of Political Commissars.
>>30609437
Speaking of the USA
Here is another thing they borrowed from it.
The Teritorijalna Odbrana(Territorial Defense Forces) was based upon the US National Guard as each Federal State had their separate TO.
Does anyone have any info on what basic training/boot camp was like for any Warsaw country?
The Yugoslav Military saw tons of influx of Western NATO military equipment in the late 1940s as Tito split with Stalin.
During the 1970s Yugoslavia wanted to acquire the F-5 Tiger II from the USA but as Nixon who was close with the Yugoslav president Tito was ousted the deal fell apart

Zeljava Underground Airbase one of the most expensive military constructions in all of Europe. It was placed on the border of BiH and Croatia it could withstand 20 mega ton nuclear bomb.

Well anybody got any stories from their parents?
My old man was stationed near the Hungarian Border and they used to trade LP's,cassettes and jeans for shit tons of booze and what not then have the entire base get drunk. Though that only worked when the Hungarians were posted there sometimes the Red Army was there and they would just sit there and taunt them with a big barbecue and laugh how they looked like Mongolians.
Most people these days don't know that the generation born 1940-1960 hated the guts out of the Russians.
Also once they stayed at this place and the faggot staff at this now demolished Hotel went into their rooms and stole all "western" goods from the luggage.

I really wish information on the Warsaw Pact was easier to find, especially military uniforms.
>>30610254
>Praise the Dacian Race.
Wild tangent here: I still want to know what the fuck was happening in the "core Indo-European" group (Gr**k, Armo, Pooinloo, presumably Dacian) after the "peripheral Indo-European" groups (Celt, Tocharian, Hittite, Italic) had spun off
>>30609862
>Well anybody got any stories from their parents?
No
Everytime Ill ask my grandparents or dad they just talk about endless boredom... My grandpa guarded borders and my father was in castle guard and they would just walk, patrol and take shit from superiors... they didnt even give them ammunition...
It's amazing that Europe lasted 45 years without a major war between two hostile powers.

Me family is from ex soviet state. Dad was in the army briefly, because nobody could get him out of that and all the favors were used up on his brother. During a marathon run, one of the guys had a fit of illness and my dad picked him up and carried him to the finish. Was penalized but newspapers put him on front page as a hero. He later ended up hurting himself from that, got put to a hospital and the doctor wrote him off. Then he became inspiration to han solo as a honest to god smuggler with plenty of near death incidents with the empire
>>30610401
Strange my old man had tons of stories
As he was a veterinary physician he was in charge of the kennel.
Some soldiers would sometimes eat the meat which was intended for the dog and try to feed it fucking bread. But it made no sense the food they had was according to my old man pretty damn good as it was a local and their military chefs were great, you could eat as much as you wanted.
Sometimes just weird shit went on like chasing gypsies who were trying to resell flowers which had been placed on graves.
Also what the hell was up with Czechoslovaks reselling frying/saucepans wherever they went?
Is it some Czechoslovak speciality or something

I wonder what the fuel on that missile is. Judging by the safety equipment the crew is wearing it must be pretty nasty stuff.
>>30609862
I have one.
My uncle was an professional officer in LWP (peoples polish army).
This one time my uncle was bored and had an "idea".
He waited till it got dark, took a KBKS (light, .22 rimfire rifle for sports & basic soldier training), and went outside of the base.
He cowled through the bushes, than shot down the street-lamp at the guard post. The guard, some poor conscript dude, got scared shitless, and my uncle had a lot of fun watching him panicking.
Pretty mean, but still funny. :-)
I have a few things.
>>30609537
I can tell you from a family friend that after the Romanian economy went to shit in the 1980s if you were assigned to the armoured corps for your national service it was entirely possible to only get to put a single round through a tank on a test range during your entire training.
He said his group was late though, and their co was hurrying everybody through. Said he didn't get to look through the optics for more than a couple seconds and consequently has no idea if he or anybody else hit the decomissioned tank they were aiming at.
What he mentioned of barracks life didn't sound anywhere near as intense as >>30612722 looked.
Otherwise they got a lot of practice cleaning and stripping their aks (I don't think he remembers what exact model it was), it took him out of engineering school for a year and the showers in the barracks were that old ass style with the pipes crisscrossing the ceiling.
He told me more but I can't remember that much. I know he didn't enjoy it overall, sounded like that was mostly because he had no interest in handling guns.
>>30615575

>>30615626

>>30616632
If you have to do that til the patch comes out clean that job would have been shit!
>>30616734
well thing is...it really depended on the CO of the base. I have heard people who had similar stories but a lot of guys who said that they had little to no down time, and lots of ammo spent on training ranges...it really depends on o lot of factors. In one case the CO was so corrupt that they spent the whole draft at his country side plot of land building a house for him.

>Well anybody got any stories from their parents?
My old man used to sell computers and software to commies.
He was old school code monkey. His masters degree was from electrical engineering, because there was no faculty of computer science or software engineering back then. Company that he worked for sold all kinds of shit for Moscow olympics. Timing equipment, cash registers and boarding systems for then new Moscow international airport. I wasn't even born at that point but doing business with commies continued for next decade. Whenever they were shipping anything to Soviet Union their office corridors were filled with consumer electronics and clothing, any space left in truck was filled with western consumer goods for their business contacts in SU.
One kinda special thing he sold to commies was a automated blood sampling system. He had written a good deal of it's software for his masters thesis a decade earlier along with dozen other students. A mainframe computer to run system, bunch of terminals for users, some robotics for actual sampling, bunch of printers and readers for barcodes to keep track of sample. Delivered to few hospitals in Moscow region. All was done according to CoCom, so it was bit obsolete by time it was sold and acceptable to sell to commies. PC's were becoming the thing already by then. A follow up visit to check if there is anything wrong with it. A minor problem, some guys with uniforms had picked up mainframes from every fucking hospital.
>>30608806
Those arent exactly Patriotc Guards.
I think they are PTAP.
>>30620106
Why is LWP so cool?
>>30609862
Both of my grandfathers and one uncle served in the army. The fun thing about the Soviet army was the sheer amount of lying that was going on. Since both of my grandfathers were electricians by trade, they were quickly told not to go out with the others during drills, but instead spend their time fixing shit that broke.
Mostly the officers televisions and radios.
They were still listed as artillery loaders or something like that so HQ would not transfer them away. Their units had a shit ton of "ghost soldiers" as in that they had men who were written up as radio operators, but actually were farmhands who raised pigs so the unit had more food.
Generally speaking my grandfathers said that the army was just very strange for them.
>>30620168
Same happened to my grandpa in the Romanian army.
Some colonel liked his handwriting style. So he took my grandpa to write all his paperwork. In exchange the old man was spared from training and only had to obey the colonel.
He was written as a mechanic for the amphibious vehicles despite the fact that his unit had none and my grandpa knew nothing about mechanics.
>>30609862
My uncle who was stationed in Congo saw some a group of kids eat a dog that was his regiment mascot or something
>>30617151
I hope you are trolling, NVA stands for Nationale Volks Armeé
Might have spelled it wrong tho
>>30615626
How did he justified the ammo he just fired?
I call bs.
>>30620232
The Major of the base near the Hungarian border liked my old man he always left the base in his hands when the Major fucked off somewhere.
They didn't feel like cutting grass around the base so they went to some village and bought some goats and them do the jobs.
Though the commander of the garrison near the capital was a complete asshole he never let him take a leave, he never understood why until he learned that unless you promise to bring some home made sausage, stake or something you are never getting a leave.

>>30620296
Please, like a few rounds of rimfire more or less even registered on the annual report. We're talking a situation where the man could just take the rifle and do whatever, clearly no questions asked.
>>30620344
All i know is communist governments were pretty tight with guns and ammo regulations.
In the army they were almost paranoid. My father and his entire platoon spent 6 hours on a winter night searching for a fucking bayonet in the snow with his bare hands.
>>30608843
More! You're a god send!
>>30620264
One of my uncle's was a peace keeper during the October War. He was just flat out confused how these guys failed to knock out Israel.
>>30620304
The good old bribery system.
My father completed his stage in an engineers unit. Now he was the rebellious type and unlike his father, failed to secure himself a cozy desk job (he got the chance but he fucked up).
He would often get himself into conflicts and fights so they usually sent him to a punishment cell.
When they figured this wasnt enough the made them dig foxholes as punishment.
My father didnt really like manual work. So he bought 2 bottles of vodka and gave them to some bonehead who in exchange dug the holes for him.
No one knew because no officer could be bothered with supervising him. They just checked the results
Got some more stories but my english isnt that good. You guys tell me if you want more.
>>30609862
have some from both sides of my family, naturally as Poles they view Russians as cancer
>great grandfathers as any full blooded Poles fought against Facism/Communism
>on my moms side my great grandfather was an officer in a AT regiment attached to a Cavalry unit
>grandfather kept his diarys and a few prewar records
>fought in 3 major engagements with Germans, his unit destroyed a German scout car a week before capitulation
>escaped to Romania, then to France then to England
>Fought into the Netherlands, stationed there until the end of the war
>had some war trophies, like a few SS armbands with division names, still kept his fieldcap, badge and other insignias and decorations from 1939
>Couldn't come home after the war because of Commies accusing Western soldiers of being a traitors/spies and fear of being sent to a Gulag
>Settled in Scotland, his wife was allowed to immigrate in 1946, they moved and settled in Massachusetts in the mid 60s
>when Stalinization ended and you were allowed to actually send mail out of the country, he found out from letters from family back home that his brother killed by communists police in 47/48 for part of a AK unit during the war and his cousin was sent to Siberia and never heard from again
>on my pops side he enlisted the day after war broke out as an 18 year old, tried to volunteer for the airforce but was apparently turned down as they needed more soldiers than pilots
>never saw combat, after Warsaw capitulated he joined the AK in Warsaw
>was part of a AK unit the made and distributed newspapers and posters, propaganda and morale type of work
>requested to be moved to a direct action unit during the Warsaw Uprising
>in my grandmas house she has a picture of him toting an MP40 standing with 2 other partisans
>was captured by the Germans when the Uprising ended, moved back to his hometown of Rzeszow when the war ended
>grandma said he worked at a farm after the war
>never came home one day
>spent 15 years at a gulag
My old man once tagged along a drive to Osijek the regional HQ of the MP because they were transporting some suicidal conscript. Half ways into the drive the idiot starts shouting " I AM GOING TO CUT MY WRISTS" My old man went "Oh no you won't" took out his side arm and started bashing him on the head with it.

I'll continue from here ( >>30619387 ) for a bit with post Soviet story.
In early 90's, bit after collapse of SU. My dad made yet another business trip to Moscow, he took family with him, sort of half work and half vacation thing. I was 11. He had couple days of work near end of week and weekend for vacation. We the rest of family had couple days more for sightseeing.
First thing after arriving into Moscow, dad had some negotiations with a taxi driver. They settled on a sum that would be your average taxi trip from airport to hotel, for a chaffeur service for all day around. The taxi driver was a guy in his early 40's, an Russian air force lt colonel or colonel. Since dad paid in western cash money, our chaffeur made couple calls. Instead heading straight to hotel, we made a detour to air base where colonel swapped his Lada to his superior officers limousine.
Couple days later on saturday our chaffeur had actual work to do, so he appointed a replacement. A liueutenant, who's main qualification was being fluent in English, mom paid or gave tips in cash as it would be likely that colonel and general who supplied the limo would have ripped him off. The best thing on that trip. Moscow space museum, that lieutenant arranged us a better tour guide, cosmonaut trainee, who was his course buddy or something in military academy. Mom once again paid in cash so their superiors wouldn't rip 'em off.

So the top of the muzzle cut out is to reduce recoil right? Was the recoil so bad that it was worth reducing the effective velocity of the bullet by removing the last 2-3 inches of the barrel? Or would it not have made an appreciable difference
>>30628217
If you look closely, you can see that that "muzzle brake" is part of the upper receiver and not the barrel. I doubt it would have mattered, especially given that the thing was only given to officers and armored crews.
