Can we have one? Shit that never went into serial production

Welcome: Arms, vehicles and gear that never made it beyond prototype stage in their depicted form

Not welcome: Prototype is taken into production unchanged, blueprints

Probably one of the most obscure aircraft ever - the PN-3.
It was intended to be the Estonian Air Force's mainstay, but never made it into production due to the Soviets annexing Estonia in 1940.
The reds had no use for the prototype and used it for target practice.
>>
>>30594438

Because of >>30594464 being cheaper with less risk to expensive pilots.

Also the Cold War ended and the primary job of the Comanche was to infiltrate defended airspace and knock out radars and AA positions so that the Apache's could molest the Red Army's tanks in relative safety. That role no longer exists realistically. The reasons for the manned chopper is in flight flexibility, against a third world Army with shitty or no air defense at all, the Commanche is a less effective and more expensive tool than an Apache.

The tech developed for it did get used though, thats where those Stealthified blackhawks they used to infiltrate Pakistan and kill Bin Ladan came from.

This image is admittedly from the movie about the raid, but it's probably quite close to the real thing.

basically the applied to stuff learned on the Commanche about making a helo Visually and Audiologically difficult to detect and reducing it radar cross section to build a variant of the blackhawk which can successfully penetrate monitored airspace undetected, this vartient was used to invade pakistan undetected and do a smash and grab raid on Osama Bin Laden compound in Abbottabad, pakistan, less than a mile from Pakistans military Academy.

This image is from the morning after the raid, the tail section of one of the "Silent Hawk"s that broke off when it crash landed in the compounds courtyard.

According to official record Osama was killed rather than captured in the raid as he went for a rifle by his bed, but no affirmative proof was ever offered. They bagged the body and gave him a "Proper muslim burial at sea" which is laughable because muslim's do no provide for burials at sea. The reality is they kicked in his door shot him and then fed him to the sharks in the Indian Ocean to prevent his grave from becoming a holy site for radical Islamists. I have no issue with that and think it is probably the best way that issue could have been solved.

Look up "Operation Neptune Spear" for more info.

Its one of those wierd soviet things where nobody, not even russia is exactly sure how far along it got.

Some people think it was from start to finish a counter intelligence scam to convince hitler to waste more resources on pointless wonder weapons instead of tried and proven weapons and that the program literally only existed in fake documents intentionally allowed to fall into german hands.

Others claim that a prototype was started with many different claims regarding the level of completion ranging from just starting to weld a hull all the way to claims that a working model was built but that it tipped iself over when firing broadside, and that it sunk into the permafrost due to weight and is buried somewhere in siberia. The latter theorist claim the program failed and was then turndd into a counter intel operation.

All these claims are based off of records that may or may not have been part of the counter intel forgery campaign to trick the nazis, and nobody is 100% certain how far along the project actually got or if the entire thing was fake.

Too bad Russians kept such shit records. If the Germans had tried to build it there would be extensive records on everything including the content of the factory worker's shits that they took at the end of their shift.

The fact that Hans ate corn last night is essential to the survival of the Reich.

well if you're interested in French armour, there is literally no where else in the world to see some of those tanks, they did some fairly major restoring of the Bat Chatillon25t recently, mostly thanks to the crowd pulled in by WoT.

Mostly for weight reasons, since rubber tires are some of the heaviest parts of the plane. The tracked landing gear was too noisy and didn't save enough weight, and ended up being scrapped

But we cancelled it in 90s 'cold war over' cuts.

My grandfather worked on this project. He was the guy who took the technical drawings and made the models for the wind tunnel as well as prototype display.

We have a couple at my parents house still in my dad's office. One is just a carved shape of the aircraft and the other is a more detailed wind tunnel model.

I like the Avrocar better tho.

Extremely short takeoffs, or basically VTOL from a moving carrier.

It didn't because of delays and jets.
>>
>>30606556
It looks like it'd have a hard time landing safely.
>>
>>30606573
It had windows on the lower side of the cockpit so the pilot could see down and straight ahead when landing at high angles of attack.
>>
>>30606573
The reason we don't have UFO planes is because the military wanted jets, which is sensible. Why nobody tried to stick jet engines on the thing before giving up is anyone's guess, though some rumors say the military talked about how it would look for them to have a flying saucer shaped plane in the middle of the alien craze.
>>
>>30606556
No.

>>30606694
They couldn't put jets in it because the entire design hinged on the use of propellers. The idea behind the XF5U was that you'd make its super low aspect-ratio wing viable by having the massive propellers on the wingtips spinning opposite the direction of the wingtip vorticies. In doing so, you end up artificially increasing the aspect ratio while still keeping the wing very small, meaning you'd (in theory) have very low drag.

The problem with the XF5U was that the design also required a very thick wing. Even though it was a viable design, it would have had a very short service life because of that thick wing. Its critical mach number was going to be very low, so it would have been quickly surpassed by newer designs optimized for high-speed flight.
