F-4 wouldn't be X-wing because it just doesn't have the agility to dogfight. You do energy tricks and launch missiles from range. It's closer to the B-wing, X-wing is either F-14 or F-15.

The original X-wing and TIE fighters WERE slightly based off real aircraft, but they weren't jets. But WW2 props, the idea of X-wings having hyper dive (long range) and TIE fighters being small range fighters is based off the P-51 and BF-109, respectively, and also the technological and pilot comfort differences as well. the f105 is a fighter bomber that had single and two seat versions and scored quite a few A2A kills

f105 and f101 are the same generation, f4 was a newer plane
