If you can get him to be a big brave boy and venture into the Hallowed Realm of the Fudds taking him to your LGS or a Cabela's to grope some pistol first would be a good idea.

Handgun ergonomics are a very personal thing, and getting an uncomfortable, hard to use for your hand size pistol is discouraging to new shooters who might not know there's anything else out there.
For rifles, if he's bored by your AR I'd recommend an AK. 7.62x39 has enough bark to be interesting with intermediate caliber controllability.

I would strongly recommend a full size .22LR pistol. An SR22, P22, or 22/45 would be good choices.

Once he develops confidence and starts enjoying that pistol as well as handling it safely, then and only then consider moving up to a more effective 9mm of some kind.

Also a side note about AMD rifles. If you want to keep the forward grip, while it is awkward you CAN use 30 rd AK mags hopefully with no issue, but 20rd mags fit much easier. It's all up to preference I guess. I really like Classic's Korean steel 20 rd mags, call me a shill but they were very nice when I got them, albeit tight as fuck to put into a magwell, they loosened up after a bit
