At big box stores it depends entirely on the clerk, less so at gun shops. Technically all you have to do (at least in TX) is prove that you're 18 and say you're using it for a long gun but some places have systems that straight up will not allow a sale to anyone under 21, I'm guessing that's at the discretion of the manager.

short answer is you will never successfully purchase pistol ammo at a big box store or online retailer because people are retarded. As far as being bent over a barrel at local gun shops, that comes down to store policy.

I always had my parents get the ammo for me before I turned 21, at least until I got into reloading. Only time I tried purchasing pistol ammo under 21 I did so by telling the guy it was for my Rossi M92. He said it's fine but if he catches me shooting it through a pistol he'll put a lump on my head. I shot that stuff through my new S&W Model 10 the next day.

You could try your luck with this OP. Delivery person isn't going to card you before handing you the box. I remember buying .308 online before turning 21. I noticed after I placed the order that website policy was no ammo sales to people under 21 and I got a little worried. Delivery guy did ask if I was 21, I just said yes, got the package, done deal.
