I used an Anderson jig because at the time they had a deal going on.
I used a really cheap drill press I bought at Harbor Freight, and I bought a router but it didn't work with the jig setup.
I had a vice, but not a proper one.
In hindsight, I know that you really, really shouldn't skimp on tools and stuff. Spend the extra money, get a good jig (80%'s comes with a plate for a router, for instance), and get a good press. It will cost a lot, but it'll come out looking a lot nicer than mine, and save a lot of time in the process.
Mine, baring that screw up, would have been functional, as far as I can tell. It's just freaking hideous.

Check out some youtube videos about assembling upper receivers
When assembling uppers make sure to season the threads properly, use Aeroshell grease and properly torque the barrel nut, and time it properly if necessary
Might be worth buying a BEV block, or other clamshell type upper holder if you're doing it yourself

Paratroopers use carbine rifles because of the nature of their job. I may be wrong on this, but carbines are used for people that can't/won't (because combat is a secondary task to their role) use a full length rifle. Tank crews, sometimes officers, and paratroopers all used carbine rifles because full length rifles got in the way.

Not having a full length rifle when the nature of your task isn't something like a paratrooper, it's silly not to take advantage of the benefits of a full length rifle.

For an M4 carbine it's 500 meters for a point target

We also know that paratroopers COULD jump with M1 Garands, but they choose M1 Carbines because the mobility was better suited for parachuting, but then again these are totally different cartridges being compared.
