Is the P226 a good first pistol?

Just applied for my restricted and non-restricted licences (Canada.)

Would like to get a bolt action rifle and a pistol. I've shot some rifles as a kid but that's about it. I'm looking at a Savage .22 for getting not shitty at target shooting.

Any better suggestions? I prefer semi-auto from aesthetic and tacticool standpoints, but I'm open to revolvers.

The 226 was my first pistol. It depends if it fits your hands. I got it because I like the placement of the controls, lack of safety and tbqh, practicing from the transition from the da pull to sa is fun.

Sigs from what I experienced have the best DA pull. Do note that the 228 and 229 exist along with the 239. Those three being smaller and more compact versions of the 226 if you will.

I do have small-ish hands.. not tiny babby hands but on the smaller side. In the course I took, the old cop S&W 9MM, Colt 1911 and a Glock all fit pretty good, with the S&W being on the bigger end of comfortable.

Sigs do have large controls. They recognized this a few years back and began making the E2 grips and short reach trigger to better accomodate people with smaller hands so they could buy Sigs. I had a problem with not getting a proper reach on my 226 during the first year I owned it so I bought both a new grip and trigger in pic >>30480451

I have limited knowledge on how other guns feel and their ergos but I did shoot a CZ75B years back along with a Jericho 941. I do remember the CZ's ergos to be extremely comfortable and nice in my small hands.

But definately do go make the effort into trying out as many possible guns out before making a purchase.

For rifle, savage Mark II FV, or some other heavy barreled version.

For pistol, definitely start with semi auto. See if you can still find a Walter PPX range kit by the time you get your license, they're great for the money. M&P9s aren't bad either.

How does the grip size of the M&Ps compare to Glock?

The latest gens of both have changeable back straps so either one should fit.

I like my P229
>no safety cause
>safeties are for just in case you want to pull the trigger with a loaded gun when you don't intend to shoot?
>S/DA so it has a safety feature
>crisp clean SA with a smooth predictable DA anyway

Thanks for all the replies anons! I will look into these other P series guns. Any other brands I should check out? I'm just drawn to the Sig for some reason.

Looks badass man.

If you're partial to hammer fired guns particularly DA/SA, check out

>CZ: CZ75, CZP-01
>Beretta: PX4 Compact (suggest G Variant)
>S&W: Gen 3's (pic)
>HK: USP, P2000, P30
>IWI: Jericho 941, not well versed in them or their variants

Sweet infographic, thanks man. I will check all those out. It seems like this is a hobby where I'll have to learn a lot of terminology. DA/SA is double action / single action?
>>
>>30483008

Yes. It's also sometimes called "TDA" (traditional double action).

I'd be careful about the S&W 3rd Gen guns. They have great triggers in my experience, but they're out of production and parts support just isn't there if things break. You're going to have to look for second-hand spares -- made even harder since you're in Canada.

I think the P226 is a fine choice. A CZ-75 is another good DA/SA option, as is a Beretta 92 (my favorite of the three for pure shooting -- SIG wins on the controls).

HK has terrible DA/SA triggers unless you get a USP with a match trigger, and even then SIG and Beretta still beat it handily. The match kit barely brings HK out of "what the fuck were they thinking" territory.

If you want a striker gun, it's hard to go wrong with a Glock 17, unless of course you're a snowflake.
