I know they have typically slightly different roles, but can they be compared?

I mean, you got 20yo seals. Can these 35yo delta grampas even perform on their level? You so often hear about 30-something pro ball players and how they are pass their peak.

Also in general, does /k/ favor first or latter as the ultimate cool guys doing cool shit unit?

>>
>>30476556
Brother, SEALs are good, but even some well trained infantry can, and has stopped them. They are not meant to be an infantry role. Delta is absolutely ridiculous though. The stuff they do is insane, and they are always suited to direct combat roles.

You want to know why Delta didn't take out Bin Laden? It was actually offered to them first. They pretty much told them to pound sand because they had more important jobs to do.
>>
The only SEAL team that's only comparable to Delta is DEVGRU. Conventional SEAL teams are more of a mix of the 75th Ranger Regiment and Army Special Forces in terms of capabilities. At least Rangers, SF and Delta guys keep their fucking mouths shut and keep their arguing to themselves.
>>
>>30476641
Makes you wonder how common is it for Delta to do a hit and to let the seals have the credit after.
>>
>>30476641
To be fair, DEVGRU only got picked because the commander of DEVGRU at the time was William "Do as I say, Not as I do" McRaven, a Navy SEAL himself.

I'll tell you this though, if Delta was sent in instead, there wouldn't be any media bullshit as a result from the raid.
>>
>>30476622
>that fucking mennonite beard
absolutely disgusting.
>>
>>30476655
I doubt they'd ever do that. At least, it would be released as a "US Special Operations raid" and not a "Navy SEAL raid" just outright.

What pisses me the fuck off is that the current administration is so easy to namedrop Delta as of late seeing as they're involved heavily in the Mexican Drug War and removing taco, as well as in Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria.

First of all, what makes you think anyone on /k/ has anything valuable to contribute to this? I think anyone who's opinion would actually matter on this subject probably isn't allowed to share it with random strangers on the internet.

But since you asked, I'd say the title of:
>ultimate cool guys doing cool shit unit
goes to either the SAD/SOG or anyone who's part of JSOC.

If I knew the answer I wouldn't be allowed to share it. That was my original point. That said, my experience in life so far has been that 90% of everything is paperwork, and I don't see why SAD/SOG would be exempt from such a fundamental principle.

Awesome. Can I make a request? One of my favorite operator books is Cold Zero by Christopher Whitcomb about FBI HRT. It's not on KAT and my physical copy is an advanced reading/review copy I got on ebay. It's rare but has some typos. But I love the book and want it on my kindle. It's maybe the best war memoir ever imo. Because it was written by an actual professional writer instead of some lunk head seal from texas.
>>
>>30476946
I don't, sorry. I'm sure it can be found with a bit of effort but I am actually posting from work laptop tethering my phone's data bandwidth since internet is down.

Also I am reading some of Marcinko's books at the moment, precisely Rogue Warrior series Seal Force Alpha book. And fuck me, it's retarded as shit compared to DF.
Sure, it's a bit snappier and it has a lot of jargon in general, author also likes to semi-seriously insult the reader when he predicts that reader didn't pay attention to remember a detail or two from the precious chapters but still, it's so fucking typical SEAL gung ho mentality.

>muh warrior creed
>muh warrior spirit
>muh seal rooty tooty point and shooty operator persona
>muh french braid ninja body delivering 350 rapid blows to an enemy paki in 3 seconds

It's just so boasting.

Other than that, I read Nicholas Irving's The Reaper before that. Short but very very immersive read considering that it's all real, non fiction, about a ranger sniper operating inna shittystan with SR25. Written in a very humble way, I remember watching some of the dude's interviews on youtube after and him straight out admitting that he was pretty much the worst dude in Ranger tryouts, rucking and shit, always last.

I think it's funny that dudes on the internet will sit here and debate who's better between two things nobody has any close knowledge about besides heresay on the internet and actually take sides between the two.

Reminder, none of you are JSOC, none of you will likely ever be JSOC.

Feel free to debate shit, but rein it in to a more humble level being as realistically you don't know what you're talking about.

There are PT studs who are chicken shits when under fire and there are old men with 260 PT scores whom operate on an everyday basis. It's impossible to determine who will be effective in combat before it happens and even the military admits as much, therefore it's better to stick with soldiers you KNOW won't crack vs a bunch of untested newbies.

Because if you're too old to operate anymore it doesn't matter that they won't let you take Relook anymore. Turns out that being banned from the unit formal is not a very powerful disincentive, especially if you'd rather drink beers with a buddy in your RV. Furthermore if you operated for reals it's not like your friends are going to throw you under the bus for writing a book.

SEALs < Delta

DEVGRU = Delta

It's a bad comparison. They both have different missions and aren't really comparable. DEVGRU and Delta more or less have the exact same mission capabilities, however.

SEALs get a bad rap because they're popular and more widely known. They tend to do the more high-risk type stuff compared to SF, and Rangers always have a lot of support when they do missions.

SEALs like to sneak around in four man teams without any air support very deep in enemy territory, which tends to get them killed often. When SF does that, they have a bunch of locals that they trained for six months coming along for the ride, and if Rangers do it, they bring armor and air support.

So because everyone knows what SEALs do and that it's hard to get into, every alpha male swinging dick jerkoff with an inflated ego that wants to be the next lone survivor joins the military to be a SEAL. Not that they don't do a good job or aren't capable, they just brag about it after they're done.

Whereas for SF and Rangers and such tend to be guys who were already military and found out about those types of units after being in for a while.

Just my unorganized thoughts on why SEALs can be jerks. And I heard that most of the frat boy jerk types that don't grow up after BUDS and selection tend to get put on ST3.
>>
I got the chance to attend a presentation done by a former delta. Mostly a recruitment thing, but the inevitable question about delta and seals popped up. His response boiled down to this
>Youth kills
>Professionalism
>Insert implied homosex about sister services
Overall an interesting dude. He recycled and I can't remember what portion, but basically they had a liter that weighed 300lbs and they had to carry it a good distance before a certain time. aafes is fucking retarded. I work at one of their gun counters, and we're not allowed to display (or technically carry) AKs of any kind, and we can never display more than 4 ARs at any given time.

The only thing more retarded than the rules written by people who get paid too much are the idiots I sell guns to

Naw, I won't say AAFES is retarded (as a whole.) However the ultra-nationalistic assholes who take the time to write to the IG, which got AAFES in the shit need to die.

>I MURRICA SO HARD I GOT AK'S BANNED FROM THE BASE!

I could see it being the retards in the military. I was in the army for 3.5 years (that was my contract, fuck off fags) and I don't think I ever worked with anyone as needy or as entitled as the people who shop at the main PX on a regular basis.

just today I had some old fucker about to yell at me because I wouldn't sell him a gun. He told me he just sold his house and is living in an RV, and doesn't have a physical address to use on a 4473. I told him that because of that I couldn't legally sell him a handgun and he goes off on a tirade about "muh 25 yurrs uh service, I have a right to buy a gun adam and eve not adam and steve"

also get a shit ton of asian wives of said retirees who will butt into the middle of what you're doing, whether your arms are full of 50 fucking boxes of ammo or not, to talk to her son on the phone because she doesn't speak english and can't find turtle soup or whatever.

Not sure if you're still following the thread, but I want to let you know at least one guy got the book following your recommendation. Downloading it from audible now (because I work and can't read on the subway)

Doesn't Les Baer make custom 1911s for Delta?

No idea, some sources say they use glocks, others say 1911. I guess they use whatever they want.

Um, Like, I mean, Operational Secrecy has been a central element of military science since Carl Von Clauswitz. The less your enemy knows about your tactics and methods the better. Many things can be inferred or extrapolated from accounts of missions. Your personal gain from selling the penguin book of the month is less than the benefit to your unit from your methods not being general knowlege.

The Idea here is unit loyalty overrides personal financial gain.
>>
>>30486668
thats why those books are proof red before they get to the market. If the military really thought this was such a big issue then they would introduce a stricter confidentiality clause in contracts or just not approve those books at all.

Just notice how most of the criticism comes from pre-iraq war soldiers who didnt really get to experience all that much. So they are salty because this generation gets do do shit and tells about it.
>>
>>30486615
Yeah its smart for you, but really dishonest in a way on your squad. It's a dirty job, nothing to be proud of.

Thing is, many use it as a cheap way to get publicity. Luttrell put a lot of personal work into Lone Survivor movie, and wanted his friends to be potrayed as accurate as possible, which is honorable. Others will just try tell "cool" tales and let some director make a whatever movie about it.

AAFES is retarded ever since they instituted all the laws to "protect" their buisiness.

If a bunch of spouses and kids selling drinks/candy/food on motor pool monday is killing their sales, they need to change their fucking business model.
>>
>>30486894
Lol wut??? I always see kids ir groups selling shit or collecting donations near or outside the px what base you talking about?

>>

the kids selling things belong to an organization that already "donates" to AAFES. AAFES is pretty much its own weak little mafia org. It's technically illegal to make a soda mess or pull profit on base without AAFES express consent. It literally has nothing to do with profits they just noticed they weren't getting their cut and demand an in.

The reason for the removal of 30 round magazines and the sudden influx of feels removals is because its higher headquarters is based in the peoples republic of kalifornia. There is or was an attempt to stop selling alcohol, cigarettes and firearms at one point. It was part of the 20th century soldier and marine initiative. They succeeded (from what i can see anyway) in only removing certain magazines like FHM and Maxim or the rare porn mag rack.

there was also a poorly guided attempt to remove energy drinks but that go absolutely nowhere and resulted in people being fired

>The stuff they do is insane, and they are always suited to direct combat roles.

They've denied orders to engage the enemy before. In Iraq, they refused to roll into a city because they knew they would butchered in minutes. They know their limits.

No. Their old guns were worked over by in house gunsmiths and would be rebuilt in house on the regular. Nowadays they are a glock unit, but I'm sure some guy could get away with carrying a 1911 if he really really wanted to.
