Are snipers as cool as they're made out to be in fiction?
>>
In my experience, no. At least not in the Marine Corps anyways. I enlisted infantry and was in a company with a sniper platoon. They were good guys and everything but besides having a couple different weapons and ghillie suits they were no different than standard infantry.
>>
>crawl for two days in the mud

Don't forget pissing and shitting yourself because you can't move from your position for three days

>>
>>30454797
Is this a meme? I see it being said everywhere that snipers shit themselves while in position. Can't they take turns?
>>
>>30454825
Camelbak, you don't need to eat or sleep every day.
But most of these posts are memes anyways. Some have snipers in urban areas to be overwatch for other infantry, others have a long range marksman for patrols, which acts similar.
>>

It's a meme. They fuck off behind a few trees or something, it's very rare for them to be stuck in an open field for a large length of time. And if they are, they undo the ghillie suit, roll over under it and take their shit then just scoot over a few feet.

Not at least in Finland. Lot's of work, preparations, training and special missions (while others are resting) and not much actual shooting (which I assume is the "cool" part). Still the best thing ever but nothing like movies.

What about Chris Kyle?
>>
>>30457281
Disappeared when Kyle got exposed for a lot of lies. Don't take me wrong, 160+ confirmed sniper kills is fucking amazing. But he seemed like a nervous fella that got a bit sucked into the fame, and told a lot of tales, which almost cost his family $1.8m in lawsuit after his death. When people found out a lot of these tales were false, everything else, including the movie got defamed, which is sad because American Sniper is probably Bradley Cooper's best movies, and a great movie in general.
You also have a lot of people calling out American Sniper for not being 100% true, because apperently people are too stupid to see the difference between a documentary and a hollywood action drama. No movie based on real events is 100% true, same goes for American Sniper, Lone Survivor, 13 hours, even Titanic.

Are spotters just snipers who picked the short straw and got stuck being a spotter?

Or is a spotter its own school and they can't pick up the sniper's job if he's taking out.
>>
>>30457643
A buddy team consists of 2 qualified snipers. One serves the "sniper" role while the other serves the "spotter" role. They switch duties every few hours or however long they agree upon. The purpose of switching is to relieve eye/mental strain of the one serving as the sniper.

I don't doubt that he shot civilians, I do doubt that the majority he killed was civilians. He also said he never shot children. This was Ramadi, one of the cities America had the most trouble with, mainly because a lot of the people there claimed to be civilians, and would turn out to be milita. The outposts in Ramadi was constantly attacked

its a meme to insult texans and texas since a good chunk of people from there are proud of their home state.

apparently we all have to hate our home state or we don't belong
>>
>>30458224
Yeah and? He still had 160 confirmed kills and was the most lethal sniper in modern US history, he was a Navy Seal. Obviously they take pride in that seeing that he is from Texas. Same with Marcus Luttrell who took pride in being Texan. It wouldn't even make sense to have a Chris Kyle day in any other state.

Yeah, it's almost like people lie. But I'm sure a nobel Knight like yourself would never lie. Face it, Chris Kyle was a Navy Seal, something you'll never be, he was feared by the enemy, something you'll never be, he had one of the longest confirmed sniper kills in US history, something you'll never accomplish, and he had over 160 confirmed kills and a bounty on his head, something you'll never accomplish. I get it, I've been on /fit/, same situation with Zyzz. People get jealous, and I see you havent had much argument to stand with, so I'm guessing half the problems you have with Kyle is coming from threads on /k/.

Does any of the lies he told about shooting rioters, and punching a guy change the accomplisments above? No, that's why Texans will keep having their day to honor a legend that some bad guys still fear to this day.

Kyle was a faggot. Him having a trident does not absolve him from his faggotry. He lied about his military record and of his legitimate kills many of them were from baiting, which is a bit of an issue when the CPA encouraged citizens to turn in any dangerous material they found for a cash reward. He lied about having 2 silver stars with V devices and 3 bronze stars he never earned, so yes his lies do have an effect on his accomplishments.

I doubt they have .50s. Most likely they are .338s or .308s. .50s are devastating. A determined enemy driving a bus attempted to run our road block. One single shot from the .50 took almost all of his head off. It was gruesome. Pretty cool but definitely gross.

Not him, but I don't like texans because they're usually arrogant. They talk about Texas like it's better than everywhere else, even in ways which it is objectively not. Take guns for example. Other states offer more freedom of firearm ownership than Texas, but a Texan would tell you that gun ownership and the right to self defense doesn't exist outside of Texas. Then they will talk up everything Texan, especially Chris Kyle. When they found out a Texan had the most confirmed kills, they lined up to suck his dick. Too bad they found out from the movie and he was already dead so they had to make a petition to give him the Medal of Honor and give him a special remembrance day instead. Lastly, they go to other states and let it be known to everyone that they're Texan. Either through bumper stickers, the Texas flag, a shit load of Cowboys merch, or they'll just tell you. And they always drive jacked up, unnecessarily loud cummins diesel trucks. I use "drive" very loosely because they usually don't know how to.
>>

Still a solid score on RT and IMDb.
>>
>>30458961
The .50 is used for material destruction, such as disabling an engine block to end a vehicle pursuit, detonation of certain explosives from safe distances, destroying "soft barricades" or support beams for walkways (think wooden pedestrian bridge) and often times show of force to intimidate a criminal into surrendering. I've heard the excuses of "belt buckles are equipment" but a police marksman using that excuse would find himself up shit creek. The rules of engagement for police marksmen are typically more restrictive than for military snipers but the .50s are used appropriately for the few times they're brought into the field.

agreed, im sure texas can be a very nice place but people talk about it like its the most badass place on earth where everyone has a gun and is a cowboy you "dont mess with" when in reality my own state has better gun laws and more people carrying per capita. Texas isnt even on the top ten list for that.. not that it really matters that much because DC is on the list which makes no sense but im trying to make a point here okay guys. My friend who never had a gun before or much interest in them moved to a nice area in Dallas from here in Virginia and then said "I think I'm going to get a gun now that I live here in Texas because I know everyone has them" ...yeah he's gay for not having one before that but you get the point. It would have probably been easier for him to get one here and good god looking at the crime rates he definitely needed one more here he just wants one because he thinks it makes him more "texan". I'm glad for Texas and their state pride.. I mean the state itself is bigger than France so they are granted that. I love my state too.. but some people literally think Texas (aside from border towns like el paso) is like the wild wild west still.

>Are snipers as cool as they're made out to be in fiction?
part of sniper school at benning is crawling through poison ivy.

I was army infantry for a 5 year enlistment. Spent about a year and a half in my battalion's sniper section. I never felt like we were that special or different than other infantry, save for different weapons, the occasional use of the ghille suit, and we were attached to our HHC company with the mortars and the scouts instead of a regular line company. Sniper school was pretty neat too. genuinely good training.

Honestly my favorite thing about it was that there was really never any platoon level bullshit, since there was only 8 of us in the section. Since we were a mechanized infantry brigade, it made us more useful as glorified FISTers, but we occasionally got to pull some cool guy shit during deployment, but nothing any infantry/scout platoon wouldn't do, just with less dudes. We still had to deal with big army fuckery and we never had any sort of special treatment or relaxed standards.

I don't think anyone in section felt like we were super high speed or "muh speckle forces" but it definitely beat the shit out of any line company. Any infantryman with average level intelligence and fitness could probably do it. I rotated back to the line when I made E-5 and ETS'd a few months later.
