SM has been regarded as the best but personally I feel that his quality has declined lately. At the Front has been making some and their first run of Oak A was fantastic. i'd go with them. Plus, they're working on getting the full range soon with Blurred Edge and a few other coming soon. If you want SM however, purchase them through 1944, he isn't a prick unlike SM's owner.

How thick is the fabric in the smocks exactly? Does it breath well? Does it handle water well? Is it something you'd wear for a week in the woods in September?

I know Karl from inrange has been wearing I think a lower quality reproduction smock in the desert for shooting, can't imagine it gets too hot.

The thickness is decent, its as close a reproduction of what the SS actually had and they weren't known for their quality desu. There's a few weak points (namely the armpits) but other than that its pretty sturdy and has resisted trekking through the forest on a few occasions fairly well. The camo loops get caught in everything and you might want to remove them if you purchase the later model smocks. It's made from cotton so it breathes pretty damn well (im from Texas and I rock it in 100+ degree weather without too much hassle, but im 22 so your mileage may vary). It don't have the water tight treatment that the original smocks and zelts had, but you can apply your own and it will serve you just fine. Personally, I like the mint fresh from the recruiting station look so I'm always anal about the look of the uniforms, but if you don't mind the rugged, battle-worn, and faded appearance it will definitely last you. (if it wears, just shoot them an email and ATF will fix it up for you)

A lot of the low-quality uniforms and smocks are pretty infamous for their fragility. Personally, i'd only purchase from Gavin, SM and their re-sellers, ATF, and maybe luftwaffe supplies.

I can only speak for Texas, what I read online, and what I hear from the grapevine, but it seems pretty lively. The big Texas SS group had a falling out and now the scene is mostly Heer, but the national SS groups and a few other ones (LSSAH and 3rd SS

I first got involved at the start of 2016 after researching it for a year and there has been almost monthly events.
Personally, I'm pretty shy and avoided joining a group but it really is best to do so. It gives you a place to ask questions about gear and authenticity from people who have been doing this for decades. If you are adamant against that the best advice I can give you is to read EVERYTHING you can, you don't want to blow hundreds of dollars on bunk, low-quality gear.

That particular camo pattern you chose is fine. 1944 purchases though SM and they make the best early-war camo on the market. Here's a couple of places I use for information about the patterns

The last one is particularly pertinent to the camo pattern you chose.

If you have no interest in reenacting, then just choose whatever meets your fancy. But remember that some groups are legitimate nazis when it comes to authenticity and you MUST have their pattern from their approved vendor. The unit I'm in is fairly laissez-faire and mostly there for fun. Just try to make sure that you make the right purchase the first time.

I don't know if I'd be up for reenactment. I live in Montana so there would probably be a lot of travel involved and despite my German/Norwegian genes I feel like I don't have a face that lives up to the good name of the Waffen-SS haha.

Lol, no one is actually up to the mainstream idea of the Waffen SS. I'm a slovak-irishman and a former SS-man told me I'd make the cut. Its all about playing army dress-up and remembering the people who died fighting for what they thought was right. Montana is about as bad as Texas as a lot of the "big" reenactment events take place up in the northeast. But there might be some groups up there and I'm sure some of the national ones have branches there.

The groups try to speak German, but mostly it is limited to giving orders when in the public eye. Its a good idea to learn it, but you wont be sent to a camp if you don't know how.

Both contacts and period glasses are acceptable. The German army issued dienstbrille to recruits who did not have their own.

Automatic weapons are rare, but a lot of them are legitimate ww2 trophies. The rest are semi-auto repros.(I know that someone is about to start selling legitimate semi-auto stg44s repros in the correct caliber if you're interested in late war.)

Looks like the fall pattern of a mid war, lateral overprint or poly spot type 2 smock. The earlier patterns have solid lines where the hand screened patterns overlapped and had small numbers 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, on them to be linked together. Since that smock has neither numbers or visible overlap lines id say lateral overprint, since poly spot is pretty rare to begin with and it looks like it has a horizontal pattern. That camo lacks numbers because they were made only for clothing .
But it could just be a bad repro of the early plane tree pattern that doesn't include the print lines or numbers to cut corners.
Opposite it is the Oak A fall pattern on a type 2 smock as well.
Both smocks are on top of plane tree zeltbahns. Early pattern on the top left, later one on the bottom right.
