After I removed the mag, I was going to break it down. Where I fucked up was forgetting to rack the slide to remove the round. I pulled the slide back slightly to engage the slide lock, then pulled the trigger to completely remove the slide, which of course fired the round.

Here's the procedure that works for me, OP.

>pull slide back, verify either visually or tactically that chamber is empty, insert finger into chamber if it's dark
>release slide
>verify no magazine is inserted, still
>probably good to go, verify every time before dry firing there is no magazine in the gun
>chamber check every time if possible

Dry firing is risky business, OP.
Especially for people like us who love to keep every magazine we own loaded and laying around.

So it's a natural habit of mine when I hold/pickup a gun to ALWAYS visually inspect the chamber.

On my AR, I charge it all the way back and visually inspect (even when it holds open on my empty mag).

On my shotgun, I feel into the tube and press on the loading spring. Then I rack it back.

I don't even think about it anymore. I'll do it at the range, too.


Always thinking about safety has ingrained itself into my mind. I'm constantly checking.

I go for my weapon in my dreams sometimes so I don't keep my carry piece at my bed, loading and unloading constantly is just asking for set back. Usually when I actually wake up for real instead of Inception nightmare bullshit I know exactly what's going on but the thought still concerns me, I keep a magazine inserted no round chambered in my bed gun so there's at least a degree of manipulation that needs to occur before it's ready to go.
