2 3/4", 3", or 3.5"?

Should I even bother looking at 2 3/4" 12 Ga. shotguns?

it's very rare that you even need 3" shells. 2 3/4" should be examined carefully just because that means the shells are old, but practically there's very little reason for them.

what are the pros of shorter shells?

bigger is better right?

Target practice for starters. I'd like to try hunting - I never got into it as a kid because dad never took me.

Eh, you can, but it won''t get you very far.

I'd recommend clays and 2 3/4" is plenty for that. But if you expect to get into turkey hunting or big game in a place where you're required to hunt with a shotgun you could go bigger.

makes no sense
2 3/4" buckshot & birdshot loads alike, are essentially the standard by which other loads are measured
for example 2 3/4" 00 buckshot loads are commonly, and very effectively, used in anti-personel roles

2 3/4 birdshot loads are exhaustively used for trap shooting and small bird hunting

also

3" slug loads are often used for hunting deer & mid sized game due to large-diameter, high- mass projectiles, which penetrate muscle and bone consistently

defensively speaking, loads of this type are also often carried by an operator IN TANDEM with common 2 3/4" buckshot loads, because the more accurate(and hard-hitting) slug loads can be used effectively at greater range than shot loads

many (but definitely not all) 3 1/2" loads are designed for hunting turkey
turkey are notoriously difficult to kill utilizing ammo with a small payload, which is remedied by the larger payload found in appropriate 3 1/2" ammo
im hungry

many pump-action shotguns are made to feed
2 3/4" and 3" 12ga ammo
so naturally you could potentially use one gun for multiple roles/ammo types

mossberg 500 for example

I plink with 2 3/4 and turkey hunt with 3.

My buddies use 3.5 to turkey hunt.
