Which branch are you enlisting/enlisted/considering?
http://strawpoll.me/6764857

Ask questions, get advice from retards on how to lie on the poly, bitch about recruiters, accuse each other of stolen valor, just keep it in this general.

Which SOF is seeing the most action these days?

What marine mos's don't require security clearance? I'd like to keep my options open incase the scummy shit I did when I was younger keeps me from getting one. They typical

Nice, you have the contract yet?

Go Navy man

Navy vet here, Diver is an amazing rate with even better opportunities once you are out. Its hard though man so you better be ready.

Need advice asap

Give me the red pill on 19K, 88M, 19D and 74D
The recruiters made these sound so sweet but what's the war time/peace time reality
>>
>>30362483
No sir, Ive got another year before I can join (financial reasons), and I want to make sure I give myself enough time to train my feet and knees so I dont fuck anything up during SFAS or the Qcourse and get med dropped

Does anyone know if the Navy is open to prior service Army?

Age 28, Active as 19k (Tanker) and was with an MP reserve unit. Full contract finished, completely out.
>>
>>30363078

Do actual tankers wear tanker boots? Because them shits is comfy.
>>
>>30363226
Yup, still wear them at work, even in this heat.
>>
>>30362541
>Recruiters made 74D sound sweet.
You may be beyond help.

>19K
Do this.
Even if you NEVER deploy, you can tell stories for the rest of your life. How many people can say they got paid to crew a tank?
>>
>>30362889
I hear you, makes sense. Best of luck cause im in the same boat. Going for a contract right around the new fiscal year.
>>30363078
To the best of my knowledge it is. You sep with a RE1? No medical conditions? You will most likely need to apply/qualify for an undermanned rate.

I want to join.

Any suggestions?

Well one of the recruiters is Chem corps is why

19K is very interesting to me and I'm passionate about tanks and tracked vehicles but keeping other options available

I bought mine for work (paramedic) and because they were specifically designed for people who spend hours and days wearing boots inside vehicles. And they're pretty impressive.

I'll keep looking.

>>30363345
This genuinely made me angry, and I had to stop myself even now. I remember some dumbass getting his straps cut when we first got to our unit, and he went out an bought them. (You have to qualify as a crew to wear them)

I really don't care though, I'm glad you enjoy them. It's just strange how the tribalism still takes hold.

It's a boot. I've worn all kinds over the years, from engineers to paratroopers to those fucked up nylon jungle boots. I've never once tried to claim status in or emulate a member of any armed forces. But I need boots for this job and the military is pretty much the known universe's best source for boot technology.

Tanker boots were intended to be comfortable for wear in a vehicle for hours or days. I work 48 hour shifts. I've been in these for 16 hours now. Those fuck-awful tactical abominations would have been smelling like the inside of a yeti's pussy after 8.

> mfw this shit starts an EMS trend and 50 years from now, old tankers are having strokes when people refer to the Corcoran 5407 as "Medic Boots"

Ah. Got it.

Yeah, with my line of work it's the exact opposite. The new guys always have ten tons of shit on them and then over the years they just stop giving a fuck. It's like you lose 5% of the fucks you gave starting out per year. When you start, you carry a Leatherman, a knife, trauma shears and cargo pockets full of random medicrap like IV sets and cannulas. And of course, everything is shiny and starched. After 20 years, you would probably run calls in boots and boxers with a prison shank taped to your chest. It's like the mark of an experienced medic is to carry a minimum of crap.
>>
>>30363811
Stop being a fucking faggot. Yeah no shit Sherlock. That's why I said Infantry contract. As in it guarantees Infantry. MOS is in SOI ITB and you get to volunteer. You'll either be an 0311, 0331, 0341, or 0351.

88mikes are just truckers, cool guys but not a very cool job. Though I'm sure you will meet some 88mikes who are dumb as bricks. The 3 88mikes I know are chillooking as fok.

Will I get pussy as a 5'6 manlet in the navy? Has anyone here been to Japan?
>>
>>30369122
~75% become 0311's, ~25% become weapons. That's in a typical Infantry company of 3 line platoons and a weapons platoon. So 8-9 out of your 100 scenario, give or take needs of the corps. Could be less, could be much higher.

Line platoons typically have 3 squads. That's how weapons kinda run it also. A squad of mortars, MGers, and assault men.

Since you ask about mortars it is very common for them to break away and do their own thing.

Always commission over enlist. Only enlist if you wanna do cool guy stuff.

I knew 2 Intel officers. One is jacked and the other is super awkard. Also knew a guy who recently commissioned infantry and got assigned to an infantry unit as like an s-3 or Intel guy.

On the officer side if you're with a reserve/guard unit Intel could be office bullshit. Enlisting as a 35f will earn you the PowerPoint tab however.

You have to score high enough in your class to get infantry, then go to ranger school, then pass ranger school, then go to your first unit and do well. If you do well, then if the assignment gods smile upon you, maybe you'll end up somewhere close enough to a ranger unit that you have the opportunity to attend ROP or whatever they're calling it these days. Get accepted, then do well as a ranger. Then, as a senior 1LT, don't apply to become special forces for some unknown reason that I will never understand, despite the fact that you probably have the background and fitness to get selected.

No matter how well you do, they'll kick you out when you make CPT. Then you have to go to another unit, get lucky with your assignment location and type again, get an early command, do well in that command, maybe get a second command, do well in that command too, and then apply to command in the ranger regiment.

Honestly, ending up in regiment as an officer is probably 2/3rds luck and 1/3rd skill. If you do not get exactly the right assignments in exactly the right order, it will not happen. If you show up to a unit at an unlucky time as a CPT and have to wait more than a year to get a company command, it will not happen. And so on.

The last guy wasnt me. But.

88M is a pretty chill life back in garrison. Everybody basically loves you because they habe no idea what you really do during the day. The key is "oh i was PMCSing a truck" or "I was cleaning some oil stain". Youll be driving alot to ranges on post if there are any, delivering anything from ammo to portaJons. Out in the fiel is when it gets complicated. Depending on what kind of unit or in or your platoon manpower, youll be on the road alot, doing anything from logpacs to ammo drops to helping set up Farps and Roms and going to LARPs at 2 in the goddamn morning.

But its a good life and the trucks are fun to drive and nobody really fucks with you. Be able to lift 88 Pound mortar cans. Maybe more if theyre HE. i cant remember....
>>
>>30379283

Yeah, this is all the benefits of crossfit with none of the costs.

I go to my local Y for some of the workouts. I replace farmer's walk with a rowing machine and do the runs on the treadmill then jump on the dumbells.

There's lots of 1/4 and 1/2 sprints. After you do this for a long time, next thing you know 2 miles will be easy. I rock a 12:30 2 mile now, and I never run outside of these workouts.

>>
>>30379163

This is how I got my network ops contract in the air guard.

I was hanging out with friends who came back into town the night before the afoqt. I blew it out of my ass and I got 80s on the verbal ap and acad, and like a 30 on quant; doesn't matter since I met the minimum requirements and the leadership at the unit I applied to is totally gay for me since I have years of professional experience.

Imo, active duty is for kids out of high school and college new grads who fucked up and didn't secure a job. The guard and reserves are definitely the way to go for people who already have a good life and want to serve.
>>
>>30379370
>terminal lance
Wasn't aware of this term but after looking it up it perfectly describes one of my friends who just finished an enlistment. I thought he just had a bad attitude from too high expectations not being met since he idolized marines as a kid. Not sure what you mean by skate unless you mean go through the motions. He didn't get hitched though he thought it was great in the beginning when some of his friends did. So is this elitist marine mentality is just overcompensation/marketing? What do you recommend instead? Based on my reading it seems like most former military have not so great things to say about their experience and end up going PMC or PSC, but in order to do that you need a military background. How do I control for the least damage?

>More hours flying as a commissioned officer than active duty
>having a regular job where you get to leave to go be a pilot 3 times a month
>>
>>30379489

Not that anon you're talking to but:

skater = faggot who hides from work, thereby causing more work for his colleagues

skate = the act of hiding from work

terminal lance = faggot who didn't try very hard at being a marine and blames getting out as an e3 on a system that is out to get them. Usually a 2nd or 3rd class pfter, a markman level shooter, and a skater.

Corporal and sergeant cutting scores are in the 1600s these days, closeouts hardly ever happen. The only reason why someone would be a terminal lance is because they were a shitty marine and never picked up or got busted down for being a moron.
>>
>>30379532

I'm a prior active marine and I also once chugged the "reserves are stupid" kool aid. I had the option to go to a state school on a full ride and instead I enlisted because I let the propaganda seep into my head. I'm still buttmad about the five years I spent working 14 hour days for shit money.

Anyway, there are two f16 pilot slots at my guard unit that have been open for like a year. It really seems like the guard is the best kept secret in the military.

$13,000 (o-1) a year plus special pay to hang out for one weekend a month/two weeks a year, retirement options, space a flights, and more? Yes, please.
>>
>>30379561
Ok then I was totally wrong. My friend was a good Marine and tried to get the most out of it. The definition I read of terminal lance basically described someone who was disillusioned with the stagnation/lack of dancement or mobility. And he definitely did not skate on his duties, he trained a lot as well. He just thought marine life was a waste of time and could have been fulfilled elsewhere.
>>

In 2011 Infantry cutting score for e4 was 1830.
>>
>>30379637

I used space a all the time when I was in '02-08 to get between mcas beaufort and miramar. I went home every holiday. Also, my guard unit is an airlift that does flight nursing, they have ten open seats on their c130s at all times.

I was also pleasantly surprised when I saw how seriously they take their training, especially compared to ad air force. I watched their security forces drill one weekend - they got in riot gear and just beat the shit out of each other for like four hours, is was pretty glorious.

They're in southern california and frequently get called to assist with wildfire operations and later this year they're going to be going to germany to do medical flights out of the operating areas and kuwait. I won't get in before they go, still excited about what else happens in the future.
>>

>>
>>30379684

Pretty common knowledge that retard jobs that have a billion people and tiny fields with around 150 have a sine-like attribute when it comes to scores.

Judging from your personal definition of what it means to skate, I'm guessing you were one of those people that everybody hated.
>>
>>30379624

>someone who was disillusioned with the stagnation/lack of dancement or mobility

That is just part of being in one of the combat fields when there is no combat. There is always something to do in the other fields and people hate those who are lazy and hide at medical or other places during work hours. Everyone knew what they were volunteering for, and if you didn't and you try to make you being bored everyone else's problem you aren't going to have a good time in the marine corps.

Your friend is definitely right. Being a marine isn't rewarding in really any manner of speaking, telling civilians you are a marine gets old really fast, probably faster nowadays that the bootlicker culture is dying down.

When you get to be about 21 and your friends are graduating from college and making like 20 or 30k more than you in entry level positions, it starts to get even more depressing.
>>
>>30379732
Your post is a little retarded.

To the contrary I was well liked. Skating is a skill and well praised.
>>
>>30379782
Yeah he said he felt like he was being held back and said that the marines being "underfunded" didn't help either. I guess he just felt like what he was doing was pointless or mindless and there was little room to grow, especially since the rank cap is lower than other branches as he claimed. At first he wanted to make it a career until his 40's but that faded away after serving 2 years. Now he wants to do real estate and be financially independent.

I'm about to finish my 4th year of college (History, 3.4 GPA) and I know that I want to join the Army, but I don't know whether I want to commission or go Enlisted. I'd like to stay in for 20 if that matters.

Another thing, I was thinking that I'd like to go into something with intelligence. I've heard to do that you need to get Top Secret Clearance, which requires an interview. There are 2 things that worry me and make me wonder if I should even go for a TS job:

-When I was in my freshman year I smoked weed twice

-When I was 16-18 (when I first discovered 4chan) I went through a kiddy porn phase.

I haven't touched or looked at any of that degenerate shit in years but I don't know anything about statute of limitations or if the Army would care. Anyone have advice?
>>
>>30380427
Scrub your shit clean and delete everything that could ever connect you to any of that CP.

As for the pot, don't lie about that.
If they ask just give them a calm concise answer.
I'm sure they'd understand somebody experimenting in highschool with something like that.

>>30380470
Yeah, I figure with the pot shit I can just be honest. I was an awkward 18 year old who didn't have many friends and said "sure" when a hot girl asked if I wanted to get high with her a couple times.

And there's absolutely no evidence that could tie me to any of the CP shit, I'm just wondering if they'd ask that kind of thing on the interview i.e
Interviewer:"Have you ever committed a crime?"
Me: Yes
Interviewer:"Which crimes?"
Me: shoplifting as a kid, smoked weed twice, also I watched a bunch of CP as a teenager
doesn't seem like it would win them over

>>
>>30371449

They are expected to do far more infantry shit than artillerymen.

Historically the mortarmen would eat, sleep, and travel with the infantry. In combat they were just behind the infantry in position to give supporting fires. If the company were to take casualties they can function as an organic auxilliary for the commander, and were usually some of the first ordered up to the line to serve as temporary replacements for infantry or to perform miscellaneous infantry tasks like carrying ammo/supplies or carrying wounded out of the combat zone.

So they're basically infantry with mortars, whereas the artillerymen are guns guys with rifles. Different emphasis. I dunno how they're used in modern operations.

>>
>>30381509
i meant it was changed a short time before they shipped out, one guy went in as a medic and had it changed to something in engineering a few days before shipping out. I think he had previous experience in engineering but another person had no previous experience in anything and still had the same thing happen
>>
>>30381513
I just ETS'd, spent my last three years with 12th CAB in Germany. Army aviation is 10x better than the other branches when it comes to culture and happiness. Plus, you get to learn from the saltiest, most experienced warrant officers in the world who could fly blackout while beating their dick and singing the anthem.
>>
>>30381535
Probably only specific cases honestly. Needs of the Army and all that. They still would have to ok the change before shipping

Forget how hilarious it is that you're 30 with a phd and you don't know what to do with your life.

Also, forget this faggot >>30381458 as well. Design and implementation is done by civilians, not military enlisted or officers. Direct commissions, officers who are brought in at higher ranks, are only for professional degrees; you'd be a second lieutenant with a phd making $2900/mo if you joined as an officer.

Look into cyber in the army or air force if you really want to join active and do something in your field. Milfags in cyber are pretty much only junior sysadmins though, so it may be pretty unfulfilling.

Of course you can always google around and look at jobs. You're getting old though and you've never expressed interest in the military in your lifetime so it may be difficult to get a commission. If you want to get in your best bet are making some friends and getting a recommendation at a guard or reserve component imo.

Hey guys I just passed my pre-MEPs physical so it looks like Ill be shipping out on monday. I'm going for the CTI rating. Is there anyone who can enlighten me on what they do? I know the gist but is there any cool shit I can "subrate" in? I talked to some SEALs and they said NSW is looking for crypto fields to join a new task force. Of course I'd have to be a petty officer to even consider joining, but its my goal for the long run. Can anyone answer what this lifestyle would be like? I enjoy fast paced heart pounding stuff, so speaking foreign languages to enemy combatants would be awesome. Apparently even the CTI's which is supposedly a support rate have to go to SERE if they work in NSW.

>>
>>30382369

Hurrrrrr... its obamas fault...

The joint chiefs had to come up with something in order to get tech people into the military and actually retain them. DCOs have no command authority like line officers, giving rank is purely for financial reasons because they can't push higher special pay initiatives through congress.

I wasn't commenting on someone being a higher rank, I was commenting on how junior enlisted kids will see a captain and expect him to know stuff without realizing he is a DCO and might not even have experience in the field he was assigned to. Assigning DCOs is easy when it comes to doctors and nurses, I just don't have the confidence that the dod will understand all the nuances of various computer science disciplines to put people in the right places; that is why I feel like DCOs for those fields haven't happened yet, besides the fact that our infrastructure is terrible and old white guys in congress don't understand the value of IT and how the world has changed over the last ten years.
>>
>>30382453

>>
>>30382438

A monkey could probably be trained to work as a nuke tech if a system of lights for each troubleshooting situation was worked out for it.

Everything that enlisted people do is technician work to sustain missions, officers supervise them except for in cases like space ops where they also do sustainment. Like I said in an above post, only civilians do development and design.

Recruiters blow smoke up kids asses to tap into that American condition in which we all think we are special. Who knows, maybe even they are so deluded to think that military jobs are more than tech work, maybe they don't even know the difference between techs and engineers.

The requisite plan I would give is to do your time, get your gi bill, if you liked your job then get out and go to college so you can get a job designing the stuff you used to swap out parts on as a tech.

I'm sure they're all ears if you have a better plan. If they don't do anything then things are going to stay the way they are - scientists don't want to join and we fall further behind in cyber defense and everything else.

Present military here (11B, med dropped out of 18X).

I'm a cynical fuck so take this with a lot of salt, but yeah - the military needs meatbots. Smarts help a little, but boil it down and in the end it's about maneuvering meat robots over terrain for a 'good enough' result. And all you need for that is a 100IQ and a 240+ PT score.

And because bureaucracies can only communicate effectively in their own language, really a 300 PT is more important than smarts.

Moral of the story: get into SF. It's better there, not perfect, but a lot better and the only place where anything resembling "warrior culture" (and IQ's over 115) remains.

Don't get hurt and come to the 82nd, just don't.

And to fellow non-morons: yes, if you scored lower than a 99 or so on the ASVAB, you're a POS.

Fine cockbreath, I'll give you the dl.
Army: vanilla hard-working rucking motherfuckers (or lazy shitbag dental assistants as the case may be).
Navy: a floating prison, but at least you learn some shitty, barely-applicable tech skills.
AF: an SJW corporation with lots of koolaid.
Muhrines: a cult, but the koolaid wears off...eventually. And slower pay increas/promotions than the army.

Let's just say I'm in the army and have met a lot of ex-marines who joined the army to get faster pay raises.
>>
How likely is it that I'd get bulled or made fun of in the military for not being social?
>>
>>30382770
Moderate.

I'm asocial as fuck but because I'm competent at my job and prior deployed I'm respected.

If you're a nerdy lil shit, expect to take shit until you prove yourself. The army has a lot of nerds and it's not a problem unless you suck.

But overall it helps a lot to be social, this is an ape-grooming type of job. It might seem like results matter most but it's peacetime, so nah. If you really need that autist culture where hard work (and smart work) gets rewarded go tech sector.
>>
>>30382709
Navy and Airforce are the most comfortable and prosperous branches of the military unless you're interested in commercial boating in which case join the coast guard.

Army is literally the people that do shit that nobody else wants to do. They have their pride and that's cool they're entitled to it, but they stick to regulation like its a bible and refuse to bend from it. Even the special forces in those communities struggle with static responses to fluid situations.

Marines are similar but they have a dangerous mindset that a lot of people lament on after leaving.

The goal if you're joining the navy is to get a rate where you don't stay in one place for too long or if you're smart to try and not get a rate on a ship. If you do that your life will be glorious.

Air Force is like the navy but way more SJW. Navy is fighting back against it but it starts from the top and makes its way down so if Hillary is elected the navy is gonna get even gayer than the airforce.

Regarding bases Army is the worst, Air Force are the cleanest, Marines are the 2nd worst because the marines have to clean them rather than contractors, Navy is indisputably the best. You can't go up against Coronado Pennsacola Virginia Beach New Orleans and the others.

Overall, grab a tech MOS and you'll have a decent wage as a satcom maintainer or such afterwards, but it's better to go civilian. That's where honest research and development happens.

Nah; it's that they ned gadgets to live while the army doesn't, which results in different failure mechanisms via feedback cycle per service.

SEALs are a whole bucket of fuck on their own, however. The group I met could neither operate a humvee door nor fill an MBITR. Not their fault, per se...I was chatting with an old Ranger Bat PSG and his theory was that the Navy stood up a commando school without the institutional experience to make it work. Army SF have the infantry background they can revert to so they're pre-trained for the basics. Navy learn without an operationally experienced background to correct off of, so feedback issues with arrogance become a problem and events like Lone Survivor occur...things no generic line recon team would fall afoul off because they can into basic cascade-failure prevention norms.
