Old thread is barely in the ground. How much kit do you carry for some light operating? I usually carry 15 AR mags, 2 two liter canteens, firestarter, knife, map of the local area, and some snacks.

This is a quick "jump out" rig. The LBT 6094 with two pistol mags, a radio, an ESEE Izula, and two Flex Cuffs, a Glock in a Safariland, Cuffs + Mag in a Safariland case, Surefire G2, Oakley SI Assault Gloves, my BCM 14.5" AR, and Lowa Zephyr GTX boots. The Tops Sky Marshall and Estwing Tomahawk stay tucked on either side of the center console.

Its as budget as you can get. It will fall apart under hard use. If youre on a budget for a chest rig check out the south african pattern 83 rig (pictured >>30350634) or something like a SOE micro rig. If you really must have the condor rig you should find a friend or family member who can sew and have them double up on key points

>>
>>30351636
No problem friendo. What did you decide on?
>>30351508
Gas masks are more of a toy than anything but if you want a good mask check the following points:
>side mounted filter so you can shoulder rifle on other side
>seals arent cracked and fit face tightly (look up banana oil test)
>Takes 40mm nato filters without adapter
>Is new in packaging or close to
>>
>>30351699

>15 mags

Holy shit seriously? I'm getting a kit together and was going to carry like 6.

How many would you guys recommend carrying on a battle belt? I was thinking one pistol mag and 3 rifles, with 3 rifles on the back of my pack. Is 6+1 mags enough for an AK?
>>
>>30351699
I am still looking...old to guns but new to chest rigs and vests.

Looking at good gear built to last, LBT and such. It may be expensive but I am a firm believer in buy once, cry once.

Thanks again.
>>
>>30351920
Consider that if you actually need your weapon, you will not have access to fire support, and depending on situation may not have access to resupply either.

Meaning what ammo you have on you is all you have until you successfully break contact, kill all the enemy, or get killed.

You might want to try checking out a Crye JPC. It's quite minimalist and it includes 3 integral mag pouches on the front flap. It's also scalable if you decide that you require side protection later on. Battle proven with SOF too.
>>
>>30352110

On point. But there's a big difference between tossing a mag in your back pocket for a home invasion situation, and fighting off a cartel hit squad. But I know what you're saying and I agree...

>>30351920
Dispersing my mags across the 'layers' of my kit works well for me. 6+1 for an AK seems like a comfortable start. But you're working with just a battle belt and an assault pack? I'd hope that a) the pack would accommodate more like 5-10 mags, and b) you'd have a chest rig that would offer another 3-4 mags on deck for the AK

With that squared away, I personally would carry 2 AK + 2 pistol mags on the belt. More interested in hearing what works best for you though

>>30351122
I'd be willing to bet that a mare's leg or masterkey is the most functional application for a shotgun. Still, I say don't let your dreams be dreams

Yeah, external MOLLE is going to attract attention, kind of gives you the "mall ninja/Division Agent" look. I really think the best way is to get a bag that has options for internal modularity instead. Vertx has some really nice low profile bags that give you this option. You might want to give them a look. http://vertx.com/Search?category=BAGS%20AND%20PACKS

>>
>>30352482
You want your mags placed and oriented on your rig so they're on the side of your reload hand oriented so that when you pull them you can go straight into reload without fumbling around.
You can stack several mag pouches on top of each other, general rule of thumb is that you don't want more than 240 rounds of 5.56NATO or 160 rounds of 7.62NATO on you plus 2 mags of side arm on your rig at any given moment.
If you need more than that you can put them in a day pack, but honestly if it takes more than that you're likely dead without some support anyhow.
That's also where subtlety comes in, but that's another thing to go on a tangent for.
Aside from ammo, rig up some sort of hydration, small camelbak type of thing and a small first aid kit that contains a pouch of antibiotics and non-blood thinning NSAID, plus a tourniquet, hypoallergenic quick-clot, and a roll of packing, and a compression bandage like the Israeli dressing.
Also some trauma shears. That is for your use only, on you. Obviously the likelihood of needing it is slim to none unless you're in a Bosnia level SHTF situation or the Stan or sandbox.
>>
>>30352893
Bicycle helmet with modded 1913 rails?
>>
>>30352901
This, in a SHTF situation unless you're in an actual team, you'll want low profile, defended but not worth much target appearance so you're not worth enough to battle it out with for your shit, yet you're not weak as fuck and able to be steam rolled.
Tacticooled up is big target.
A long gun with a side arm and plain clothes is much better.
Best is to wear a low profile plate carrier underneath a top and put one layer of mags.
Do a concealed sidearm with spare mag in the holster.
Don't look like you've got a fuck ton of ammo and firearms.
Don't blind the fuck out of your weapon either.
Let it look beat up and old but functional.
Decent optics are no issue but if it looks all shiny and crazy, it may make you a target to try and get your equipment

Anyone have experience with these? Looking to update some older gear with buckles and these seem like a good no sew alternative. Basically just want to know how they hold up. They won't be load bearing, just used to keep pouches closed and such.

It's awesome once you're used to it. Awesome retention and with practice, I'm as quick with it as I am a holster with no retention. I prefer the paddle version cause I have less problems when it's time to take a shit. Other than that, it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

They hold the mags themselves snug just fine, you can turn the dc3r upside down and shake the shit out of it and it would be fine. But the inserts themselves sometimes dont catch with the little top tabs and keep the inserts snug inside the rig. Its tough to explain without pictures, when Im home Ill take a few and explain better. And yes, I do think the dc3rH is a better choice between the two for that reason and I like the resized admin pouches on the front

>what is the purpose given?
Because the military uniform is the first protection of your skin.
It protects your skin from being burned (most of true military protection have some kind of fire protection).
It can protect your skin from certain low velocity projectiles like gravel, pieces of glass or wood.
It protects your skin from environmental dangers like thorny plants, little shits on the ground, if glass or a window is/must be broken, etc. And so it protects you from avoidable injuries and infections. It is also a protection against parasites and animals.
Some military uniform have IR protection too that makes you harder to be seen with night vision by the enemy.

Yes it is hot and annoying especially if your wearing a plate carrier, helmet and complet combat equipment and building breaking in equipment and it is a 35°C sunny day. But it is necessary. That's especially for you >>30354331.

That's at least what a good instructed soldier should know.

it sounds like...you want to circlejerk over mag/ammo counts as much as I do. I think your 2/3 ratio for 7.62 compared to 5.56 is spot on - I figured the extra 5.56 rounds is to compensate for the double taps you'll be using to put guys down with M193, whereas 7.62 delivers far more 1-hit stops.

My rule of thumb is:
Have 6-8 primary & 2-4 secondary mags on deck (belt or rig)
And just carry as much ammo/mags as possible in your pack. This is, of course, aside from all the other important shit you should have in your pack (FAK, food/water/filter/tablets, emergency blanket/poncho, toilet paper)

>>
>>30354862
Yes those three first (you)s you made for me are me. I do post a decent amount.
The 2/3 ratio is based on mag capacity and weight.
The 7.62 weighs more and typically run in 20rd. Mags.
Same mag counts for both 5.56NATO and 7.62NATO are very close in weight, space they take up, and does account for the extra shots.
I'm taking it from when I was in the army and the basic combat load is 6-7 mags on your kit and one in your weapon.
And I definitely agree on team size.
In a legitimate SHTF situation I would want 1-3 other well trained men with me, preferably who I've trained with and a in-situ base of operations for our families to be at that is low key and easily protected with most of the people who don't have good training or military experience staying back there.
I'd definitely be more comfortable with 1 other well trained man than 3 men who shoot rarely and think they're hot shit.
Low profile in a situation like that and being able to keep stealthy is more important than having a large group.
Also, having good training can make you as effective as 10 men in a firefight.

You can never go wrong with a 1911. They're reliable as fuck. Other than that it comes down to comfort and your own preferences. Go to a range that you can rent guns at to shoot and try out a bunch of different .45 pistols.
I personally prefer a Sig 226 and 1911 but there are a lot more options out there for full size pistols.
And the Springfield XDS for concealed carry.
My biggest thing is trigger squeeze and break weight.

I would honestly suggest one of the plain Jane plate carriers without plates in it for LBV or to use the LBV that the army uses. You flip the buckle side to the front so the back side of the belt is solid and just unzip the front of the LBV for quick donning and removal. Just get one that isn't UCP

Get quality plate carrier, $200ish range. Get better plates, I prefer level 4. Medical supplies and training for it, ask around town, some local hospitals/ clinics will offer classes. Hydration source, canteen, bladder, etc. Get a backpack unless you want to carry everything by hand. Yes replace the blue camouflage unless your going to be operating under water. Get a long gun and side arm, plenty of magazines and ammo for both if you haven't already. Gear you can buy online, from Amazon, surplus stores, etc. Find and ammo online or in your local gun store.
>>
>>30354519

>>
>>30356248
Curious how much training you think should be done with a pistol compared to a rifle. I'm inclined to believe you'd actually be deploying handguns more often than a long arm if shtf. Not to mention it's what most of us carry 24/7 (which is also to say - when we lack access to our ARs, 12 gauges, etc)

Also, have you thought about how to disperse gear, supplies, and personnel over vehicles? Do you take as many trucks as possible, or pile 3-4 guys in just one or two?

Personally, these are the kinds of rabbit holes I wanna see /gq/ go down...

>>30356477

>>30356498
Medical is always a good place to start. But ask yourself if camo is such a high priority. Is your area of operation sparsely inhabited woodland or desert? If not, maybe you want to spend money on greyman approved plainclothes instead.
Buy ammo/mags at your own pace, but enough to both shoot and stockpile. A 20-30 liter daypack will probably serve you best; make sure it accepts a hydration element. Yes, camelbaks/bladders are pretty amazing...

>>30357456
My recommendation is as often as you can afford to squeeze it in with time and money. Obviously if you have a family your priorities won't be as flexible as a single anon.
I would like to see every firearm owner training at least 2 days a month on their primary firearms one long arm and one sidearm.
My preference and plan is to drag my wife with me once a week to train for at least an hour each on a primary and sidearm.
Train for transitions and draw.
Biggest thing people duck up on is how to draw and bring your arm immediately into action with sight picture. Start slow, get that muscle memory and even without loading your weapon train at home with a cleared sidearm from the holster you will have it in. Even if it's just 10 or 20 minutes a day, train on draw technique, then draw to sight picture, then include safety throw if you have one then include all of it together with trigger squeeze.
Once you get to the point where you can do it in your sleep start speeding things up. It takes time and repetition but it fucking works, and it will save your life.

Also first round with a sidearm you are more accurate one handed.
Follow up shots you MUST use both hands.

Lastly train reload technique.

I'm not talking competition and I'm not saying ONLY USE ONE HAND FOR THE FIRST SHOT GUYS
It's not common practice, it's not advised, it is however the truth and when you've got a chambered round and cocked hanmer/striker and only need a light short pull to fire, worrying about the second hand isn't needed.
My background is military, and some of the competitions I've done mandated that due to lack of prep time prior to using sidearm.
There's a lot more to it that takes up a lot of time and space to explain. I'll try to find a link to drop for you so I don't take up several pages explaining it.
I don't worry about LEO stuff with shooting because it's not required for them to go to the range more than once a year unless they're SWAT. The ones who shoot a lot on their own are probably worth listening to and SWAT but just assuming all police and soldiers are super knowledgeable isn't the best idea.

Its literally a requirement to be hired at the firm to have at least 12 months overseas or 7+ years LEO but a vast majority of the guys just have no interest in either firearms or equipment. Most guys I work with will have an xd or some 1911 variation in an uncle mikes holster with no spare mag or even a flashlight at night. I always speak up though and my site manager doesn't put me with people I tell him I don't fell safe with. That and they have changed their hiring standards lately to be a lot stricter.

This guy was living the gear queer dream at some point.

Thinking about getting some armor with money I make this summer, since Clinton might try to outlaw it if she gets elected.

What should I be looking at? The only gear I own is one of those SADF chest rigs, and a bunch of AR mags.

Should I go for slick or MOLLE in a carrier? I'd kind of like something I could wear under a jacket OR over cammies, if such a thing exists. Not really sure if I want side plates or not.

Do I want magazine pouches on the carrier or nah? It would be quicker than throwing on the carrier and my chest rig over it, but I wonder if that would be too much bulk?

What kind of plates should I get? Is it true ceramic plates can shatter if you fall on them with enough force? I'm not too concerned about weight, but maybe I should be.

What kind of money should I expect to spend on armor? What budget should I set for myself?

Depends, for concealment or for multiple calibers being switched out, slick and rig, for one gun and putting it over everything, MOLLE
>Not really sure if I want side plates or not.
Get soft armor if you can, side plates suck to use, but that's my opinion
>Do I want magazine pouches on the carrier or nah?
Refer to argument above
>What kind of plates should I get?
Level IV ESAPI or similar and no they will not
>What kind of money should I expect to spend on armor?
Depends on your size, can be anywhere between $200 and $400 for a set of level IV ceramics

Ceramic plates are pretty robust. If it's in your carrier they'll be fine for the most part, it's dropping them on their edges that makes it sketchy.
Most of the plates these days are multi strike capable.
I'd get a level III+ if you're going low profile but want good protection and get a Kevlar insert to put behind it, or if you don't mind bulk get some level IV plates.

your regular basic IV ceramic plate is going to be about $150~.
A lot of people, when they first look up some ceramic plates, tend to stumble onto the lightweight or newer material plates, which runs north of $300+ per plate.

I can dig the quick release part, but zip on sounds stupid to me.
And I'll try to find something that explains the principle behind it. It's not like you try to one hand shoot only for the first round and be cool, it's a thing of saying don't worry about one hand if you're in a situation that bars you from using two hands as one hand for initial shot is typically more accurate.

The zip on panel options include an assault panel (NODs, bangers, bolt-cutters or hydro), a 24 hr pack, and a blank molle panel for customization. I haven't had a chance to use it but honestly there are almost no good solutions for quick attach back panels so zippers are as good as it gets right now. A similar but not compatible system is on the Velocity Systems Scarab.

Huh? I'm serious, it can't be that hard, you don't need a permit for plates, is it illegal or something? last I checked it's not...
I'm serious though, can't you just utilize the principle of making Kevlar body panels for a car and shit, vacuum bag with resin infusion, or carbon-Kevlar for the same thing, or layering the resin ate with raw weave to provide the balistic energy dispersal of hard plate and slow down pierce resistance of soft armor.
>>
>>30359447
How is one hand on the weapon more positive control than two hands? You are nowhere near making any kind of coherent sense.
>>
>>30353133
None of that is UCP-D, what the shit anon?
>>
>>30360053
Holy shit it's not more positive control it's more accurate for first shot as it is following your natural spatial recognition and proprioception but after that first shot it isn't as accurate.
I'm not talking slow shots either, I'm talking quick draw point and shoot where you're looking because that first shot your hand will point the pistol where you are looking for that first shot.
After that first shot you will need two hands to be comparably accurate and maintain positive control of your weapon.

I'd personally like to use 1/4" steel bent to the shape of the plate and test CF and Kevlar and Carbon-Kevlar to see what from is most bullet resistant and if the layered resinated and raw weave style would help with ballistics or not.

Not the anon you were responding to, but it depends on what you want to protect against. Tear gas? Nerve agents? Something biological? Are you just looking to filter or do you want fully contained oxygen supply (SCBA). Do you want built in radio and intercom support? Built in drinking hose to keep hydrated? Have you put a laser on your gun since getting a proper cheek weld will be a bitch while wearing a mask?

For tear gas, you can get a Czech or Russian surplus mask from Bud-K for $13 plus shipping, here's a link: www.budk.com/Gas-Masks-2982
Don't expect that cheap shit to work on anything more intense, and please replace the filter since it probably contains asbestos.

If you want protection from actual nerve agents or biological agents, expect to pay thousands for a proper SCBA setup from Scott Safety, 3M, etc. Even then, there are some nerve agents specifically designed to chemically penetrate the materials used in masks, and some work on skin contact as well; you might need a full moonsuit. The moonsuit will make it impossible to camouflage and cause you to overheat.

Ever wonder why militarys hate NBC threats?
>>
>>30359683
Another reason on why these plates (or any other new plates that you come across) are cheap is that they most likely fall under NIJ .04 test specs instead of .06 test specs (the NIJ .04 armor test is much less strenuous than the .06 test). I just want to point this out.
>>
>>30360685
Make sure you coat it with an anti-spalding layer of plastic. I forget which semi-famous youtuber put a 1/2" thick plate of AR500 steel on a dummy and shot it with various .50BMG, but the end results were:

1. .50BMG ain't penetrating something that heavy.
2. The resulting bullet fragments rebounded and tore out the dummy's head and neck.

Even after slamming into the plate and losing much of their kinetic energy to deformation, they were still deadly. The plastic anti-spalding layer is necessary to catch those fragments.

I hope you don't mean regular steel. You are going to need actual 500 Brinell hardness steel. Bullets will pass through regular A36 steel like it's butter. Shaping 500 Brinell steel is also difficult without specialized equipment . Too add to this, the plate will lose effectiveness due to stress if you happen to bend it wrong.
>>
>>30360950
I'll have to look into that. Do you know what plastic they use in the new combat helmets? They're supposedly 100% plastic and catch the bullet instead of redirecting it or deflecting it.
Thathe would probably be legit to have as an outer layer, then the ceramic/soft hybrid
>>
>>30361087

Steel is likely out of the picture entirely.
>>
>>30361087
