If not, do you think ejecting downwards or to the sides is a good idea when that's a massive potential fault in design?

Fighter jets can eject because the ejection seat will completely wreck the jet in terms of acceleration thus avoiding damage, that's a lot harder when you're going up into something much higher than you with a huge spinning death blade.

Bkan shoots that fast because it has a 14 round autoloader. After those 14 rounds are expended, it's another 5-10 minutes before it can shoot again.

PZH-2000 holds all of the shells in an auto-loader, the human loader is responsible for pushing in the bagged charge. PZH-2000 can shoot off all of it's ammo at high speed, only limited by barrel heating. Having a human load the propellant also lets PZH 2000 do MRSI while Bkan can't.

M109 is the most rudimentary out of the lot. It has two human loaders, a powered rammer, and primer detonation while the newer pieces are generally auto-loaded/semi-autoloaded with electric detonation.

Should be no surprise considering it's by far the oldest out of the lot and was supposed to be replaced by the early 2000's. But the budget to do that was cut and the US is stuck with the M109 and it's derivatives for the foreseeable future.

Considering the US routinely has pilots bail out of hundred million dollar jets, they aren't worried about losing the piece of equipment as much as they are worried about losing the pilot.

The reason that helicopters don't have ejection seats is that in order to eject you have to have a mechanism for blowing off the rotor blades, else you pilots become finely sliced salami when their seat pushes them up.
