If it's all coded, why does it matter? Sure the Russians or whoever would be able to hear it, but that doesn't mean they'd know what specifically was said. I want to get on 27Mhz and the freeband above it until I get my license. It's not entirely legal but it's never enforced if done right.

You can get very far with HF (anything below 30Mhz), ideal for happening

VHF and UHF don't get too far without repeaters, which rely on power and sometimes the internet

It's often encoded or encrypted using P-25. You can use an RTL-SDR with DSD+ to decode that with your computer. Should set you back at the most 25 dollars.

If it's analog, just plug in the correct V/UHF frequency and listen in. Goes without saying you DONT WANT TO TRANSMIT.

I basically use mine as a scanner. Listen to local PD, Fire, and EMS.

Now I hardly know jack shit besides type in the frequency and listen/talk, but I'm pretty sure they can restrict who talks. I have a friend who works as a dispatcher at a local ambulance company. One night I told him I was listening to him and he asked me to randomly say "Copy" or whatever. Tried it and he couldn't hear it.

I work for a different ambulance company and dispatch can see what radios are connected and when a truck talks, they can see what radio is calling in. I don't work in dispatch so I don't even know exactly how ours works.

We need more comms threads on /k/. It kind of sucks this devolved into one, but comms is damn important and seldom known. Lots of people on here have those Baofengs, but I'm pretty sure that nobody knows how to use them effectively or safely.
They can be configured to be used as long range legal walkie talkies. We should compile a guide or something.
